964 re-spray and restore

ORIGINAL: TonyGee I will add some pictures as soon as I can work out how to make them small enough to attach to a post on the forum. The smallest I can get them in Photoshop is 299k, still too big.
Hi Tony , suggest you use photobucket or similar picture hosting site , then you just post the link to the picture , no size limitation , if you look at other posts you will see this is what they do

Photoshop; menu select | Image | Image Size (make 50% or near) then menu select | File | Save for Web & Devices (adjust image quality for output file size). Otherwise yup, Photobucket.

Hey Guys thanks for the tips. Photoshop, I should have known but Photobucket is the way to go so here is my first link, hope it works. The pictures were taken on or around 20 April and GT One had just started dismantling. At this point we didn't really know how bad the rust would be but early signs were looking positive that perhaps it wasn't as bad as we feared but there was still a way to go so the jury was out at that stage. I think we wil start to see more and more rust as the cars get older, 25 years is a long time for a car used daily. It's what lurks beneath, stuff you can't see that is the biggest worry. On my car teh worst areas are definitely the rear near side quarter panel followed by the front off side wing leading edge. There was of course rust in other places but the near side up to the door is pretty sorry looking. I will post another batch of pictures as soon as I have had time to edit them, taken on 22 May 2015 (last week). http://s172.photobucket.com/user/teeg6/library/ Let me know if there is a problem opening the link or if I did it wrong. thanks Tony G 1990 C4 Coupe Guards Red

Link working. Looks like there's plenty to do... Now stripped down have they requoted you or still the same £12k estimate?

I have just finished my 3.2 targa done in 2 pack lacquered I stripped the car myself glass out the the lot and then resprayed by a local body shop no welding was required or body damage all in for 2k have a look on the 3.2 page Paul

Great the link is working and I will post the next batch which I took last Friday as soon as I get a chance, maybe tomorrow if I have time. There is a bit more rust than expected as they found some in the inner wing in the engine compartment roughly where the coils are so that may involve some serious additional surgery. The quarter panel is being replaced so access will be easier. I think the estimate will go up as I have asked for a few things to be done such as replace door check straps and obviously once the inner wing is repaired I can see that £15k estimate going up by at least 10% at the finish. I just don't think it's possible to get this amount of work done for less money and I just don't have the facilities to do the strip down my self, I don't have a garage and more importantly I don't have the skill. I can tackle electrics no problem but that's it. £2k for a full respray is a great price even if you do all the prep. Every one quoted me a price around £3k for respray and that was everyone I went to, mainly out of London. So, I've taken a view that there is no turning back now but I won't be silly with the money either. Some hard negotiation ahead perhaps but I want the best job I can afford, one that will give me another 10 years daily use, maybe more. I'm really pleased to be preserving this car. Iv'e had it so long now I can't see the point in buying another one with lower miles and a better body. It might end up being rubbish under the skin and I'll have to start this all over again. Tony, My C4 was a in a similar state, with a lot of corrosion around the scuttle and the areas where the front inner to outer wing beading was. My bill was a bit more than you are talking about but then I had a cage welded in and a few other mods done which pushed the price up. There is a very strong case for "better the devil you know" so I think you have gone the sensible route and GT One have a good reputation. It will look a lot worse before it starts to look better and you will then notice the other elements of the car which are not up to scratch - rubbers, door frames, door handles etc. Not sure if you already have GT One doing them for you but get them to respray the black door frames and 1/4 light upright as well as the door handles. Really makes a big difference to the car if the rest is looking 100%. Good luck and keep the updates coming. Cheers.

Hi Guys Ben you obviously have shared the pain. I am having all new rubbers, seals you name it, everything replaced. I'm still thinking about the door handles, should I go the 993 route and get Guards Red or keep the original black, I'm still trying to decide. I'm not a total purest although I like originality. I had the springs changed some years ago and swapped the shocks for Bilstein, had it lowered to RS height, more stable at speed now but I don't see tha as a big change just a small improvement. I'm very confident with GT One, I have been going there for years and know the guys fairly well so it was a relatively easy decision in the end although I did get a lot of estimates. So here is the latest batch of pictures and as you can see the car is almost dismantled with just a few more panels to remove, glass out and ready for the next stage which is bare metal and cutting and welding before paint I guess. There was some rust very near the seat belt mounting point on the passenger side and that would have had a detrimental effect for sure. A few months to go yet but I'll post pictures and progress as I get them. Any thoughts on Wheels? I was thinking 18" Veloce or RH 2 piece but now I'm moving towards 18" black Fuchs which I think will be less common an dreally give teh car a cool classic look. http://s172.photobucket.com/user/teeg6/library/964%20Resto%2020%20May%202015 Tony G 1990 C4 Coupe Guards Red

Hi all

I'm not sure if continuing this old thread is the way to go or maybe starting a new thread is better but here are the latest pictures on my resto by GT One in Chertsey for anyone tat followed the last ones. I didn't take these myself as before so they are not quite as detailed. If anyone wants to see more of the strip down pictures I can re-post the links to drop box. Looks like new N/S rear quarter panel and new metal on inner wing where rust was found already done. Not sure about scuttle panel but definitely work around A pillars. This was early July so still very much on going.

Question: Can anyone give me a definitive answer on whether or not 993 door handles and lock barrels are a straight forward retro fit on the 964? According to Renlist they are but I can't seem to find out about the chrome trim rings around the barrel, what is the part number, are they part of the barrel, I don't think so. Price for new 993 handles from OPC including gaskets and VAT is around £82.00 each in primer. Not including barrels or chrome trim. Will my barrels and trigger mechanism fit straight in? I don't want to change my keys and ignition.

If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Tony

Tony,

Lemass will know definitively on the 993 handles. Think his details were listed earlier in this thread.

Cheers,

ben

HI Ben

Thank s yes I did think about asking Tom but I felt a bit guilty because he quoted me for the respray and I didn't take it to him for the work so I thought it was a bit cheeky. I was planning to go there but circumstances at the time meant it was easier to leave it with GT One who I am very happy with. Maybe I'll drop Lemas a line.

thanks

Tony

Hi to all who have followed my restoration by GT One. I just went down on Friday 28 August to approve the work to date and to take some more pictures and deliver a few bits and pieces I have picked up since I last wrote in July, namely 18" Veloce wheels (good deal), 993 door handles ( a nice improvement and easy to return to standard) and a nice Club Sport wheel. The fabrication work is more or less completed, it was worse than expected but not the worst they have seen, I ranked number 3 in the all time list so far but i suspect there are a few more horror stories lurking under the body work of our 25 year old's. The car is almost ready for paint, just some filler, the arches have been rolled to take the bigger wheels. I'm having the sills and the underside of the front and rear bumpers body colour, I'm not a fan of the black and I think it makes the car appear lower without having to go over the top. Here is a link to the latest Photobucket album. I think based on work left to do the estimate is that I will get the car back around November/December so read December/January. It's a little longer than I expected but restoration is not always a straight forward process. As for budget, I'm not totally sure, probably there or there about. It will be over the estimate of £15k for sure but as they didn't have to fit an off-side rear quarter panel there will be a saving. However there will be a higher labour cost as a result but still less than a new panel in the end.

HI Guys and all those who are following my resto. Here are some more pictures of the progress from the end of September. They weren't taken by me so they are not as sharp as I would have liked but I was away for the first half of October and I think I might be getting it back some time in late November or December. Considering it was bear metal in September it must be painted by now or at least primed, I haven't had a chance to call since returning from holiday. I did track down the 993 door handles and they were dropped off in August so I'm looking forward to seeing them fitted. It's amazing what 'lies beneath'. I'm the first to admit that this car is not molly coddled but it never misses a service and gets everything it needs as a daily driver but it's still surprising what is lurking underneath the skin on a 25 year old car, even one that has been well screwed together. Enjoy the pictures.

HI everybody, here is another update on the continuing progress of my restoration. There has been a slight delay during the year due to sickness at the restorers and as I wanted the same guy re-building and didn't mind waiting, we haven't lost much time really and I hope to have the car back in January some time, nearly 10 months later. The car is now painted as you can see although it still needs polishing but as they are still working on it that will be last. I'm pretty pleased I went for the 993 door handles in the end and It's going to look pretty good with the new wheels as well. Some additional work while it was apart included a new alarm as I didn't likre the old one, nothing wrong with it but this one has the imobiliser built in. Also a new condenser for the AC as well as a new dryer canister and a housing for the oil cooler. The AC work and alarm will add another £2k ouch. I think when yo decide to undertake a job of this magnitude you need deep pockets and a strong constitution and lots of will power because yo can just keep going, no problem, heart and head that's for sure so budget well and try to stick to it but have a solid contingency because yo will definitely need it. Final figure not in yet but fairly close to estimate maybe 10-15% over. Hope you enjoy the pictures, the new album ius a sub folder and is called NOv 2015, It's amazing what is lurking beneath these 25 year old cars.
