Just a thought. Maybe there should be a 981 register and bring Boxster & Cayman together for the new model. Try something new. The issues and experiences and enjoyment will be very similar. Otherwise the contribution will be diluted across the registers.
Been suggested on many previous occasions but thankfully never happened ..... they were calls for a 987, 987.2 and even a Boxster Spyder sub-forum.
A Boxster is a Boxster and a Cayman is a Cayman.
Just don't get me started on why there are so many 911 forums.

Back to the original topic, I have queried my OPC about the electrics design on the new 981 Cayman as I found out that my Porsche Battery Conditioner doesnt work with the new car.
They came back and explained that it has a completely different electrical design which uses an 800Ahr battery (not 80AHr like on the previous 987.2) with battery condition monitoring (and a bigger starter motor for start / stop) which shuts down power sources when not needed. Hence if you try to charge or use the Auxiliary Power sockets the power gets shut off to them after a short time when interior lights go out. There is no Porsche Battery Charger available yet for the new 981 /991 but you can use a battery charger IF it is designed for GEL type batterys which is what is now fitted, but you must not use the negative battery terminal as its connected to the monitoring circuit, there is an earth post labelled for this use near the wiper arm, I was told.
The consequence of this design is that you cannot use the Auxilliary Power Sockets without the ignition being left switched ON. I pointed out that this means you can't charge or use the power sources for anything when parked up e.g. mobile phone or compressor, without the ignition left ON and was told this is how it is designed and it wont damage the coils etc.
This also means the windows are not powered when the ignition is turned off so unlike the previous models you cant operate the windows down, or up with the door open. For me this is inconvenient when I get in and out of my car in the garage where I used to drop the driver's window to make it easier to get in and out.
I wonder if any 981/991 or even Cayenne / Panamera owners can comment on this new electrics design?
If you use the car for camping, or out-door activites then you will have to put the igniton on to use any electrical sockts outlets.
I know this is not a fault as such, but to me it is not a user-friendly design and a step backwards, also a much more expensive battery to replace, they said.

It could be that it is the same charger as the existing type (rebadged CTEK) IF it is GEL compatible. There is no Battery Conditioner for the 981 yet. I am only telling you what my OPC techie told me yesterday.

I connect with cigar lighter connector on the CTEK to the lighter socket in the passenger footwell, from memory thnk the covers area bit stiff.ORIGINAL: chrisH
How do you connect your CTEK on your 981, you mentioned the footwell panel which I see both sides but the covers are very stiff, do they come off if you pull hard enough and are the connections for your CTEK via croc clips, or cigar lighter socket?
You will have read that the OPC parts dept now say my old battery conditioner will work if connected directly to the battery for which they are sending me the adaptor leads.

Used the Porsche Battery Conditioner for nearly 12 years on my 986 and asked the OPC whether it would work on 981. Affirmative and has been used since last August and connected to cubby box outlet. No problem. and works perfectly. Car hadn't been out of garage for 9 weeks until last Sunday!

Strange, then mine must be configured wrong, as the red charge light goes out after a few minutes on both sockets, either that or they changed the design on the 981 Cayman.
Which OPC did your 981 PDI, maybe I should ask them, or Porsche Technical, Reading but I found they never get back to you?
