981 warranty issues/claims

Just a thought. Maybe there should be a 981 register and bring Boxster & Cayman together for the new model. Try something new. The issues and experiences and enjoyment will be very similar. Otherwise the contribution will be diluted across the registers.

Been suggested on many previous occasions but thankfully never happened ..... they were calls for a 987, 987.2 and even a Boxster Spyder sub-forum.

A Boxster is a Boxster and a Cayman is a Cayman.

Just don't get me started on why there are so many 911 forums.

Hmmm. Porsche has done a successful job of creating a distinction between the Boxster and Cayman, for reasons that we all know and understand.

But, a 997 Cabriolet is as much a 997 as a 997 Coupe (Carrera, turbo, GTS etc. Let's keep it simple for a moment and put aside the argument that the GT3 / 2 / RS models are significantly different to the others and that a 996 GT3 owner possibly has more in common to discuss with a 997 GT3 owner rather than a 996 Carrera Cabriolet owner)

Like the 997 Cabriolet & Coupe, a Boxster is as much a 987/981 as a Cayman is.

Here we have two 981 owners who will only end up collaborating as long as they track the register of the model they don't own. Apart from an issue with the roof motors or hood sealing, I'd say they are going to have a lot in common to discuss, regardless of whether it's a coupe or cabriolet they own. Heck, if you have a PCM3 query, you could post it in any of the 997, Boxster or Cayman forums and get assistance from the SAME people who cross the boundaries because they have an interest in, or see the logic in frequenting all 3 registers. I'm NOT suggesting merging 911, Boxster and Cayman registers, just making a point with an extreme example.

As there's resistance for trying a change, i'd second doing what has already been suggested and set up a thread about 981 warranty issues. Entitle it with both' Boxster' & "ËśCayman' in the thread's title and I'd be surprised if 981 Cayman and Boxster owners didn't share, rather than duplicate discussion points, regardless of which register you set it up in. You could go one step further and have a second thread for "All Things 981". Rather than starting a new thread for each new topic, it does build a bit of a community and a "Ëśplace to go'. It'd certainly be of interest me as a reference point for a possible future 981 purchase. More so than trying to use the search facility to try to find a scattering of 981 threads and across 2 registers.

Nick, there already is a Spyder forum[;)]. It happened organically without any individual proposing it. I guess it just seemed to make sense to share research/reviews and experiences in one place. People can come to one place to ask questions if they've got an issue or thinking of buying one, or just want to share what they think after driving one or if just interested in the model with no immediate plans to buy one. Oh, and share the odd nice pic to brighten up the place[:)]. Plus, as there's less than 10 of us, it seemed better than initiating fragmented discussions that get lost at the mercy of the search facility. (Some might be thinking it's intended to be a shrine to worship the Spyder as the best thing since sliced bread but no, it's just the best thing for a handful of us and there's a little community built up around enjoying that[:)])

As I'm now hijacking the OP's original subject I will bow out as I don't have any 981 ownership experience or warranty issues to offer[:)]

Back to the original topic, I have queried my OPC about the electrics design on the new 981 Cayman as I found out that my Porsche Battery Conditioner doesnt work with the new car.
They came back and explained that it has a completely different electrical design which uses an 800Ahr battery (not 80AHr like on the previous 987.2) with battery condition monitoring (and a bigger starter motor for start / stop) which shuts down power sources when not needed. Hence if you try to charge or use the Auxiliary Power sockets the power gets shut off to them after a short time when interior lights go out. There is no Porsche Battery Charger available yet for the new 981 /991 but you can use a battery charger IF it is designed for GEL type batterys which is what is now fitted, but you must not use the negative battery terminal as its connected to the monitoring circuit, there is an earth post labelled for this use near the wiper arm, I was told.
The consequence of this design is that you cannot use the Auxilliary Power Sockets without the ignition being left switched ON. I pointed out that this means you can't charge or use the power sources for anything when parked up e.g. mobile phone or compressor, without the ignition left ON and was told this is how it is designed and it wont damage the coils etc.
This also means the windows are not powered when the ignition is turned off so unlike the previous models you cant operate the windows down, or up with the door open. For me this is inconvenient when I get in and out of my car in the garage where I used to drop the driver's window to make it easier to get in and out.
I wonder if any 981/991 or even Cayenne / Panamera owners can comment on this new electrics design?
If you use the car for camping, or out-door activites then you will have to put the igniton on to use any electrical sockts outlets.
I know this is not a fault as such, but to me it is not a user-friendly design and a step backwards, also a much more expensive battery to replace, they said.

Re: Battery charger availability for the 981 .... not true ..... I have just checked the Porsche parts database for 981 techequipment .... part number 980 611 982 00 is the correct new charger for both the 981 and 991 priced at 50 GBP inc VAT.

It could be that it is the same charger as the existing type (rebadged CTEK) IF it is GEL compatible. There is no Battery Conditioner for the 981 yet. I am only telling you what my OPC techie told me yesterday.

Don't trust what your OPC techi told you, I'd call him, give him part number Nick gave you and ask him what it's for.

Old charger part number is 955 044 900 55 priced at 85 GBP inc VAT.

Now techie vs Latest Porsche parts database from Germany [8|]

You may also need clips part number 000 043 202 55 priced at 10.27 GBP inc VAT, but I will have a look in the workshop manual when I check a chance [;)]

Going back to the Boxster/Cayman/911 Coupe or Cabriolet part of the thread I'd like to raise the point that the Boxster and Cayman are both excellent cars individually which share a chassis and suspension components and will be seen on racetracks actually racing. The 911 Coupe will also be seen in the same venues but the 911 Cabriolet will be seen in the car park.

As such the Cayman and the Boxster stand independently, the 911 has a derivative which can hang onto the Coupe's coat tails.

The best Cabriolet around still happens to be the Boxster. I won't go further with my biases.[:D][:D]

Nick,
I have checked with their parts dept. and the 981 part number 980 611 982 00 is the same device I have already for my 987.2, it is a Battery conditioner and the clips part number 000 043 202 55 are the adaptor leads you mentioned it for connection across the battery, they are sending me these so I can use it on the 981.
Thanks
Chris

I have checked the battery fitted to my 981, part number 999.611.080.10 and it is 80Ahr, it is the starting current rating that is higher at 800A. This allows for the start/ stop and overrun charging technology the techie said.

I use a CTEK with my 981 the same one I used with my RS and can confirm it charges the battery fine. As soon as I lock the car I can confirm the CTEK is showing a trickle charge, if you need and its helpful I can connect my Fluke multimeter and confirm the trickle charge current.

I think as you say the OPC are quite Germanic and blind when it comes to using anything that does have a Porsche badge on it, even though Ferrari, Porsche and Aston all use CTEK charges with thier label stuck on top. Really annoys me when the car is made of many thousands of parts from many different makers.

How do you connect your CTEK on your 981, you mentioned the footwell panel which I see both sides but the covers are very stiff, do they come off if you pull hard enough and are the connections for your CTEK via croc clips, or cigar lighter socket?

You will have read that the OPC parts dept now say my old battery conditioner will work if connected directly to the battery for which they are sending me the adaptor leads.

Used the Porsche Battery Conditioner for nearly 12 years on my 986 and asked the OPC whether it would work on 981. Affirmative and has been used since last August and connected to cubby box outlet. No problem. and works perfectly. Car hadn't been out of garage for 9 weeks until last Sunday!

I connect with cigar lighter connector on the CTEK to the lighter socket in the passenger footwell, from memory thnk the covers area bit stiff.

Strange, then mine must be configured wrong, as the red charge light goes out after a few minutes on both sockets, either that or they changed the design on the 981 Cayman.
Which OPC did your 981 PDI, maybe I should ask them, or Porsche Technical, Reading but I found they never get back to you?

Chris ask Porsche for a reference number and an email address, its a sad fact they take weeks to follow up, but you need a ref no so you can register issues. I thnk what happens is first local OPC email Reading then try the cures or suggestions, then if no good they can contact Germany and so on.

Chris and Martin - Being somewhat perplexed given the differing views on the subject of live or not outlets on the 981, particularly as the car started first time after being garaged for 9 weeks and furthermore I also used my air compressor for tyre checks before a spin last Sunday that took about 5/6minutes with the ignition off, I spoke to Reading Tech. today. I was told that as Chris believes the outlets do shut down, in which case I was lucky to do the tyres before cut off. There has been talk of a device which connects direct to the battery but frankly I do not relish the idea of lifting the bonnet taking off the cover and fixing to said battery as my garage is far from generous and the in car socket works ideally for me. Some further discussion took place and it appears that your OPC can make a socket live to enable all to work as has been the case for the past 12 years with the 986. My OPC is getting back to me tomorow so we shall see. One thing however, if I have been labouring under the impression that the accumulator was doing its job because as Martin says the red light on it comes on when a door is opened for example, but in fact no topping up was taking place, then the battery must be an improvement over the previous although saying that mine lasted for nearly 12 years! Will keep you informed.

As you have now found out the sockets do indeed go dead. My OPC say they talked to Reading parts today and the only way to charge the batteryon the 981 is via a charger connected to the battery. I have posted the detiails on PH where someone was mislead by his dealer into thinking that his battery conditioner was going to work on his 981 just as it did on the 987.
Could you let me know if Reading comeup with a fix to liven up your cars aux. sockets as I have been told by my OPC that the design prohibits power after 30 mins as part of the new electrical system design? I will believe it when I see it.

Yes Chris will let you know how I get on with OPC and any simple fix, if indeed there is one. Not holding my breath!!
