991 Owners Cars

Finally some sunny weather in Bonnie Scotland. What a fun day of spirited driving. The R really is a special car.

Hello All,

It looks like i will be on here more from now on as I just agreed to a 991 Turbo from Redline Specialist Cars. All black with a few toys. Very excited and hopefully collecting the car on wednesday next week. Hoping this will be a step up from the 997 Turbo.

Have a lovely weekend out on the roads!

Dom

Hi Folks,

Just joined after purchasing my first 911 (991.1) after two Boxster S and several other things in-between. Really glad my car has stock 19" rims given the east Wiltshire road conditions! Enjoying it lots, and amazingly SWMBO even encouraged the purchase ;-)

And one question for you guys, does anyone know a decent detailer who covers wiltshire/hampshire border area - seems like a lot of here-today, gone-tomorrow in that line of business so would be grateful for a recommendation ?

regards

Richard, congratulations on your 991, looks great. If you are still looking for recommendations, quite a few of us swear by Adam Wookey who runs Revolution Detailing, he's based in Yate near Bristol but will travel if need be. Have been using him for a number of years and does a superb job with all the popular coatings, wax, ceramic, film protection etc. Give him a call.

Thanks PJ63 - am really enjoying the car, and am amazed by the difference over my previous 991 C4s. There is so much push from any rev and the car while still very comfortable, feels significantly more engaging than my old model. I went for manual this time and am enjoying the increased involvement this brings. Still to get a decent road trip under my belt, however have a few hundred miles on the clock now and find myself reaching for the keys at every opportunity (school run/shops/suns out.....) Have read various forums debating the noise differential over the naturally aspirated - however I'm struggling to be critical, perhaps because my last car was a c4s and not the gts, but so far I'm impressed with the noise the car makes, nice burble/downshift/over run... - which for me is part of the experience.

Looking forward to hearing other new owners thoughts,

Gordon

I took delivery of my new 911 4S back in October last year, however I have just become a member. This is my 1st Porsche, however my 1st car that I owned was a blue coloured Beetle! All the cars that I have bought have been blue! My previous car was an Alpina blue coloured B3 BiTurbo (loved the colour and the car's performance, a gentleman's M3!) However always admired Porsches so I decided to order one!

The first task on ownership was to get the new car booked in with a detailer and Xpel authorised installer. I decided to go with a full Xpel Ultimate body coverage with Gyeon Q2 MOHS coating.

Now road legal having a front number plate applied, I chose not to go with the standard screwed to the bumper black plastic mounting plate.

On handover I noticed that the rear spoiler was not aligned correctly and was sitting slightly raised from the rest of the adjacent body panels. This was resolved by the Porsche dealership, and on first washing the car I noticed a completely straight 15 cm vertical scratch on the passenger’s side rear side glass window, which was 100% parallel to the vertical edge of the glass. The dealership arranged a specialist to machine out the scratch.

On driving the car I also noticed occasionally a rattle/vibration noise coming from the passenger-side front dashboard area when driven on rough road surfaces, and when the ambient temperature was over 12 degs. So booked the car in with the dealership to get this fixed. I drove the car with one of their technicians to demonstrate the rattle/vibration noise. A few days later the dealership informed me that they believed they had identified the issue; however to get this resolved the whole dashboard would need to come out. Also to complicate the issue my wife had already organised and booked hotel accommodation for a driving holiday in Wales for me to familiarize myself with the car and this was in two weeks time! 10 days later, the day before we were due to go on our trip to Wales, I collected the car from the dealership, with them assuring me that they have resolved the fault. Driving through Wales would be an ideal test ground. Thankfully, 730 miles later the vibration noise had not returned.

I confess I would not have expected to experience such poor quality workmanship from Porsche. So I have informed Porsche UK of the situation and am yet to see what they will offer as a gesture of goodwill!

The driving trip in Wales effectively started with the Evo Triangle, we stayed overnight at Bangor and the next day we drove along the Llanberis Pass (Snowdonia) which was enjoyable, then we drove down through Betws-y-Coed and towards Aberystwyth and then across to Builth Wells and finally to our hotel at Llandeilo.

The next day’s plan was to have an early start and drive the various roads through the Brecon Beacons, including the Black Mountain Pass, the A4067 and the A4059, and then do the return journey.

However since the last time I drove along the Black Mountain Pass the Council has restricted the speed limit from 60 MPH down to 40 MPH which was disappointing, plus they had recently resurfaced the road with tar and loose chippings so it was not a particularly nice experience having the noise of loose stone chippings hitting the car! So as not to repeat the same ordeal we decided to drive down to Rhossili Bay in the Gower peninsular for the afternoon. So we typed our destination into the SatNav and we set off. However we found that the latest Satnavs are just as bad as in my previous car - even though we set it to the ‘Fastest’ and not ‘Shortest’ route, we still found ourselves on single-track roads with the occasional passing place - not great! So we resorted to the good old fashioned OS maps with my wife being the navigator. We got to Rhossili Bay with no major incidences… only to find that the normal carpark was having a major update and was down to a third of its normal size! There was additional parking in a field but the entrance was not suitable due to the low clearance height of the car. However we found a space in the original car park.

Driving through Swansea also had its issues with speed bumps, so to the annoyance of the drivers behind I gingerly drove over these at a snail’s pace. However on one occasion I did hear a scraping noise. Back at the hotel and looking underneath the car I believe this was the plastic flap that is located directly in front of the front wheels which was scraped and not the front splitter... phew!

The next day was driving back home. My wife and I were shocked by the poor condition of the so-called ‘main’ roads in Wales with multiple potholes and the debris from the broken road surface. If you dodge the pothole you drive over the loose remains on the road! On closer inspection of the car I have noticed a high number of stone impact marks on the rear arches, but fortunately the stone protection film has saved the car, and taken a bit of a beating! One of the roads that I did enjoy was the A483 - there is a section where you are driving on a gradient with lots of nice sweeping bends.

Back safely at home

At the end of April we had booked a trip to Scotland, visiting Edinburgh, Fort William, and the Isle of Skye. The Weather forecast did not sound great - arctic temperatures, high winds and snow!

Driving up we stopped at Jedburgh for afternoon tea and the weather couldn't have been better. The weather forecast predicted high winds and freezing temperatures and snow for the following day, all that you need for a long drive up to the Isle of Skye. It snowed in the night so we woke up to an icing-topped mountain landscape. It was going to be a day to remember!

33573442964_f6196b3831_b.jpg

On the drive up it started to rain and as we got higher up the rain turned into snow. However this snow flurry provided a very scenic view once it stopped and the sun started to come out. Typical April showers but in our case it was April snow showers. With the snow on the mountains this made the landscape amazing. My wife said you could imagine we were driving through the Swiss Alps and sometimes there was a resemblance to the Norway fjords. The road we took is called ‘The Road to the Isles’ and is known to be a ‘Driver's road’. Whoever decided this, they were not mistaken. One of the best roads I have driven, for its ‘S’ bends, tight bends, inclines/declines and most of the time not riddled with potholes. However there were times I felt I was driving through a slalom course trying to dodge the various potholes on some of the other roads on our journey.

Just before the Isle of Skye, the weather turned for the worst, so we parked up to let the worst pass. However once over the bridge it started to look much brighter and it became a lovely sunny day and with the snow on the mountain tops the views were stunning. We drove on for late lunch at Portree and then headed back to Fort William, stopping at various laybys for photo shoots.

On the way back we actually saw a White-tailed eagle, which is very rare. It was massive! With easily a 7 foot wingspan, it looked like a prehistoric Pterodactyl, coming towards us slowly flapping its enormous wings!

Whilst driving in Skye I had an anxious time as there was a speed camera van parked up in a layby and I was not sure if I was within the 60 mph speed limit as it was a very wide and long straight road. However, now back at home I am relieved to see that the dashcam recording displays my speed below the restriction. This was the same day the government has increased the penalties for driving over the limit. Unfortunately I was not able to view the recording until back at home.

On the way to the Isle of of Skye

The next day we decided to take a long detour from Fort William to Edinburgh, driving down the west coast lochs to the Cowal peninsula before heading back to ‘Rest and be Thankful’ and then to Callander for lunch.

We are definitely going to give the Isle of Skye a second visit in the future. However some of the roads will not be suitable/ ideal for the 911 due to the low height (20mm drop from standard and 20” wheels) of the car and firm suspension.

So what have I learned!

My Wife said the car eats the miles and she did not get bored at all being the passenger, however I think this was due to the fact that the drive/ride is like a theme park ride, being jiggled about so much on poor road surfaces and dodging potholes. On the drive we regularly received from fellow drivers ‘thumbs up’ signs and comments complimenting the car. The car has met and even exceeded my expectations and ticks all the boxes. It definitely delivers to both the passenger and driver ‘an experience’.

The sport suspension (20mm height reduction and 20” alloys with low profile tyres) is definitely firm and on poor road surfaces it can be a bit tiresome on long journeys, being jiggled about so much; however we drove home without any stops which took us over 4 hours, and had no aches or pains from the journey. The stance of the car just looks great with the 20mm drop. Having the 18-way sport plus seats really helped to cushion the firm ride (I believe these have more padding than the 4 way seats).

Also we were pleasantly surprised how much luggage space there is in the front bonnet even being the 4 wheel drive version. We just needed to put one small backpack on the backseat. Having the ‘Mode Switch’ dial I found the ‘Individual’ mode option very handy to quickly switch from ‘Normal’ to my ‘Individual’ setting being Sport, with sport suspension. Having a manual for me was the icing on the cake and a very enjoyable experience, especially with the rev matching and sport exhaust.

One thing that did alarm me (but now I am getting used to the noise) a few times a stone gets lodged in the drilled disk holes, it can sound like a broken bearing, this happened three times on the trip, twice on the rear discs and once on the front!

What a great write up, and a beautiful car.

Don't worry about scraping the little flaps and the splitter - they're treated as consumables round here[:D] though with the 20mm drop that'll be quite frequent.

Hello Everyone,

A new Porsche fanatic here.

I have owned many cars, from sports cars through to tourers. I am sure that they are not as exotic as many here have owned but a short list is below:

2003 MK3 MR2

2009 Mazda RX8 R3 (still owned)

2010 Audi A8 V8 Quattro

2012 Dodge Charger 5.7L Hemi V8

2014 Range Rover Sport 5.0L V8 Supercharged

So, I decided that it was time to have a little fun again. I had been searching online and playing with configurators for a 991.2 for ages. I spotted that Porsche Centre Reading listed one on the used section with no pictures. A quick email and a video arrived in my inbox. Very nice indeed, Agate Grey 4S with lots of goodies. In the meantime, my local dealer in Tonbridge called to advise they had a new C2S in stock, with almost identical spec. Quotes were received and I decided on the C2S, it was much cheaper to finance a new car, residuals obviously.

I took a call from the excellent team at Porsche Reading asking me if I wanted to proceed on the 4s, I declined and advised that I was going to get the C2s. An hour later, Reading were back on the phone with an excellent finance quote.

The deal was struck and I collected the car 3 days later.

I had never even sat in a 911, let alone driven one!

Paperwork was completed and I drove the 120 miles home. The C4S had only done 1500 miles so was barely run in, but my goodness! What a car!

There are some niggles and issues, but Reading have been excellent and they are sending a low loader to collect the car this week to rectify them, its nothing major, rear light bar is not working properly and some rattling issues.

Anyway, pictures below....I LOVE THIS CAR!!

PS, I have managed to touch a speed bump which has meant the lip has come away slightly on the splitter, any idea how this (hopefully) pops back in?

Hi All,

I`m a new member and enjoying the club and forum and will hopefully meet some of you in social or shows etc. I've managed to buy my very 1st Porsche which has always been a dream until now and I`m loving it, what a car and every way.

I was luckily enough to find the car I was looking for a 911 GTS carmine red with the 2 GTS packs plus the other extras. In the end I found my toy at PC Tewskesbury and can only say that I had excellent service and would certainly go back again.

Here is a photo of me and my good lady picking up my toy, she(not the good lady) is of to be detailed tomorrow and once she returns I will update again with additional photos.

All the best

Ian

Hi Peter,

BIG Thankyou due to you!

Adam from Revolution Detailing has been today and worked minor miracles on my 991 - fantastic job - thanks Adam!

Even SWMBO was impressed (and that's no easy job - believe me!)

Adam has some photos which should appear soon, and definitely will be recommending him to others - great results and at a sensible price too, fab!

thanks again Peter, I owe you a beer or two I think!

regards

richard
