Porsche 911 Carrera GTS unveiled

This is the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS, a swansong for the current 997 range as the most powerful and potentially best-handling regular production Carrera yet.

The GTS is due to go on sale in the UK in coupé and cabriolet body styles in December after its official debut at this month's Paris motor show. It will be the final "˜regular' 911 before the range is replaced with an all-new model from autumn 2011.

Unlike Porsche's more extreme GT2, GT3 and Turbo 911s and their derivatives, the rear-wheel-drive GTS aims to preserve the Carrera's day-to-day practicality while also boosting power, performance and dynamic ability.

Power from the Carrera S's 3.8-litre direct-injection flat six engine is increased by 23bhp to 402bhp. Peak torque of 310lb ft is now available at 4200rpm, 200rpm lower than in the Carrera S.

Buyers get a six-speed manual gearbox as standard or can choose Porsche's seven-speed PDK gearbox with steering wheel-mounted shifters as an option. The manual GTS has a top speed 2mph higher than the Carrera S's at 190mph, and its 0-62mph time is cut by 0.1sec to 4.6sec "” or to as low as 4.2sec in a GTS coupé with PDK and the Sport Chrono Package Plus in Sport Plus mode.

Despite the extra power, the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of a PDK-equipped GTS are unchanged from the Carrera S's at 27.7mpg and 240g/km.

The biggest visual change to the GTS is that the rear is 44mm wider than the Carrera 4 to accommodate a wider track. Porsche claims this "further enhances the chassis dynamics". A new sports exhaust system is also added, with two dual tailpipes painted black on the outside. Porsche says this exhaust set-up produces "a unique sound".

The GTS rides on 19in RS Spyder high-gloss black alloy wheels with 235/35 ZR19 tyres at the front and 305/35 ZR19 at the rear. Other styling changes include a SportDesign front bumper with a black spoiler edge and black side skirts. The rear bumper is painted black between the tailpipes and Carrera GTS logos are added to the doors and engine cover.

The black-finished cabin features Alcantara on the centre sections of the front sports seats, SportDesign steering wheel, gearlever and handbrake.

Prices for the Carrera GTS start at £76,758 for the coupé and £83,493 for the cabriolet.

The 90 litre fuel tank option sounds handy. And at 77k not much of a premium over the standard C2S....pretty much a perfect car really a wide bodied C2S with over 400bhp...[:D] Infact can those prices quoted in the OP be correct as its 8.5k just for the powerkit?
 
From this report no mention of missing rear seats made [:D] 15 September 2010 09:00 If you thought we didn’t need another Carrera version of the current 911, look away now – the Carrera GTS is revealed today, boasting a little bit more power, a millisecond or two of extra performance, a smidge more width, a smattering of cosmetic frippery and costing £12,500 more than a boggo model. If you happen to be Che Guevara or any other revolutionary, it isn’t for you. Let’s face it, this is a fairly blatant run-out job, with the next 911 due next year, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be brilliant to drive. And it looks way cool, too, on those high-gloss black alloys. What’s new about the GTS? First, they’ve taken the 3.8-litre flat six from the Carrera S and eked out an extra 23bhp, making the GTS good for 402bhp. Then they’ve performed a trick with the intake manifold which, with five extra tuning flaps over the standard engine, produce the same peak torque (310lb ft) at 4200rpm – 200rpm lower. This potentially alters the character of the engine significantly, making it more pliable than we’re used to. The GTS gets a sports exhaust system with black-painted pipes. The standard gearbox is the six-speed manual, but the seven-speed PDK can be optioned. So, it’s the fastest Carrera yet? Yes, but get back in your box – you’d have to be a human speed gun to notice a 0.1-second improvement in 0-62mph time (it’s 4.2sec, by the way), and if you claim to get real benefit from a top speed squeezed from 188mph to 190mph then you need to have a serious word with yourself (and probably get yourself a decent lawyer). One thing’s fairly certain, the GTS will handle with the 911’s customary wieldiness – it’s rear-engined and rear-wheel drive after all – but it also benefits from the Carrera 4’s wider rear track. The body is 44mm wider too, as a result. I'm an anorak. What are the detailing clues? Apart from the whopping great badges? Well, the 19in RS Spyder black alloys, a bespoke front apron with black-painted lip, new side skirts and a black finished rear apron between the twin pipes give the game away from the outside. Inside you get black Alcantara sports seats, plus Alcantara steering wheel, gearstick and handbrake. Where do I sign? Nowhere at all until December when the GTS goes on sale in the UK, priced at £76,758 for the coupe and £83,493 for the cabrio. But with the all-new car knocking on the door it’s a brave man who’ll write a cheque like this, no matter how foxy a proposition it sounds.[/color]
 
I have it on very good authority that the replacement models for the 987 and 997s have been put back a bit, and won't be seen here until 2012, although the pre-launch process will no doubt start rolling in Autumn 2011. So, we're not just seeing the normal run-out models, but stretching the best out of the product for a bit longer.

YES I have resigned myself to driving my current 2005 987 until September 2012 so with a 6 year service due next spring and possibly 2 new rears later that year I will at least get some personal value for my money [:D]

If you want a new 997 then its a good buy, and makes the last 997 special edition (sport classic) look even more stupid in its pricing.

[:)] I think this is the best option for the family man who wants his cake and eat it. If you need rear seats for the kids and see no reason why your Porsche should not be you daily driver, then as much as you'd love a GT3 it will always be a pipe dream. Hope many new owners choose the Aerokit Cup as that'll be perfect for me in 4 years time [;)]. I prefer a fixed rear wing. My budget wont stretch to new one or a used turbo (I know the Turbo is a much different machine but as an example). Mind you, the Aerokit cup is much cheaper to retrofit than the Powerkit, so i'll certain be looking out for these on the used market.
 
Yes it is a run-out model with parts from the tequipment catalogue and if I was buying new i'd rather wait to see what the 991 had to offer. Before this came along I was planning my upgrade in a few years to be a C4S with Aerokit & Powerkit, which may still up being the way I go but if one these is going at the right price in a few years i'd consider it.

Call me an old cynic but this model smacks of end-of-line sell off to me (like "Ford Escort Holiday" or whatever) [:D]. No doubt it will sell like hot cakes Don't get me wrong, will be a fab car as all 911s are, but really...what's the point of it ???

If you don't mind me saying this, thats a real Pistonheads response...Its a widebodied RWD 911S with 408bhp whats not to like? Many people don't want the focus of a GT3 or RS or the POWER! (see cost) of a turbo but perhaps want something more than a standard carrera, and at the price its a bargain....... Cheers! P.S Check the market for the last RWD wide bodied 911 C2S I think you'll find they are quite popular!
