A big mistake?

not sure what he means about "a bit of a project for someone" though.

That's a very cheap car, I'd say that you're lucky to find a good S2 for under £4K and Henry normally has a good margin on top. He's as straight as they come, so worth a call, I'd guess it'll be "sold as seen".

I'd assume that he means it has body issues, all do to some extent and it can be anything from a can of Waxoyl to £000s in repairs, or it has mechanical issues. If it needs a major service, belts and has cam wear then that's £2K. Add in caliper refurbs and a clutch, fuel and brake lines, that's another £1500. Maybe four tyres and a wheel refurb, I could go on! [8|]

Always budget to spend a grand on even the best S2 with no obvious problems. I'd again suggest that with a budget of £3K spending £2K on a really good Lux is a better bet. They don't rust as badly, don't have as much to go wrong and are easily as useable in the real world as an S2. I know, I changed my Lux for an S2 last week. [:)]

Ah, Henry's website has been saying that one is due in for ages. Looks like it's nearly arrived.

If his rep is as good as people say then this could be one to go for. Depending on his definition of "project" obviously.

This one is also close to me so by all means drop me a line if you want to go for a look see.
Also Craig, do you still want these books?

James

PS Janspeed exhaust, K&N Panel Filter & Promax chip all ordered today. Woo hoo!

Richard - Might have a look at that. Will call Henry tomorrow and find out more. Surely those are "library pics" - that's a nice looking car, not looking too much like a project...

Paul - Noted!

James - Yes please to those books - sorry mate it's been a busy few days with one thing or another. Will you be at Gaydon? Scotty said he's going on another thread. Will let you know if the S2 is worth a look and I'd appreciate your wisdom along side.

Craig have you even considered a 928 S2? you should get quite a good one for that money. Don't worry about there being over 130,000 miles on the clock. The 928 was designed to do 250,000 before needing a major overhaul

I've just nipped onto the site and it looks like a nice car cosmetically. Craig the condition of the cills/ sills is all important on a 944. Ask if you can have a look under the carpets and underneath the car, if you decide to take a punt.

Hi Craig

No plans to go to Gaydon this weekend but I and some of the others will be at Brands Hatch on Tuesday evening for the club novice trackday if you fancy being hurled around in a 968.

James

Hi John

I'd love one, but I need something that's a bit more economical to run! I'm also a bit reticent as the reputation for electrical maladies is well known, although I'm sure 928 owners will say it's mostly untrue.

It probably won't fit in my garage either... widthways... Not if I want to get in and out of it anyway!

What site was the one you're talking about on? I'm always up for a look see

I think John meant 911virgin. Did you go for a look see?

Now, are you talking about the S2 discussed yesterday or following on from John's 928 suggestion?

I'll run along to look at the S2 tomorrow am - it looks too good to be true but here's hoping... Could do with some knowledgeable eyes with me but I think I have to move quickly on this one.

I meant the 944S2. Whilst I crave a 928 myself there are obvious pitfalls...

If had another 24hrs notice I'd come with you.

It's had both belts, the waster pump and even the cam chain replaced. Those are the key things that are specific to the 944 / 968. After that I guess it's just stuff that is common to others such as rust, crash damage and suspension and steering wear. Butr I stand to be corrected by others more knowledagble than I.

If you want to name somewhere half way between Caversham and Staines you can have the books and 911 & Porsche World buyers guide tonight.

More importantly, pop the black vents in the door jamb and shine a torch into the sills. Bubbling on the outside could be the stone guard lifting, of really serious internal problems. You need to see inside the sill for a real guide to how much rust there is, and it's an easy way to treat the sills against further corrosion every few months.

Paul - I didn't get that far as it was obvious once it was out in the sunlight that it wouldn't be going home with me. Walked away - not for me at all. The ad is pretty fair as it would probably be better as someone's track day hack.

Well, it was the first car I've looked at so I'm not too disheartened, and it was too good to be true as suspected!

Thanks Scotty - definitely what's needed, - it's the hidden stuff that I'm really concerned about, less than the obvious things that just don't look right. There's also a Q&A at Gaydon on Sunday so I'll be listening very carefully to that, and hopefully talking to a few other owners.

Mind you, my young nephew will be coming with me and as far as he's concerned the best car will be the one with the most exhausts! Ah, was it that life was once so simple...

John Barnett will not be coming to any region 19 meetings!

Before you all panic, John Barnatt will be as he is the R/O

Got one!

Just back from Liverpool. I spotted a S2 on Autotrader yesterday, had a chat with the owner, was sent about 40 pics of the car, decided to go have a look, and bought the thing. It's a 1992 registered Prussian Blue(?) car with cream 8 way leather and a few other options. Not bad condition, although far from perfect, solid sills as far as I could tell, a mountain of history, cup 2 alloys, all belts and chain done, no undue noises, starts first time cold and hot, seems to perform well enough, all electrics working, no clutch judder (changed 20K ago), lovely gearchange, bespoke stainless exhaust system (a bit loud for me but I'll get used to it) handled well on 20 mile test, and for a price I think would surprise, but well within my meagre budget. If it lasts a couple of years, I'll be happy, but it should have more in it than that.

It needs a new stereo and a few things adjusted and tightened, and I'll get an oil change done immediately then look at servicing. James tells me Highcrest are the local chaps to talk to - I'll take a drive up there next week some time with it and see if they think I should take it to a field and burn it...

For now, I'm happy. Now to suss how to get to Liverpool next week without it costing more than I'm paying for the car...

[FONT=Arial"][FONT=verdana, geneva"]Nice one - all we need now are some pics. I remember looking at cars in Ipswich, Derby, and Essex, but if you re after a special car it's worth it.

If you're in Caversham, you can also try Wrightune. The owner will run you to the station and back.

If you need a lift from the station to somewhere around Liverpool.PM me ,I can probably help, providing it doesn't clash with anything else, businesswise.
Colin.
