A restoration in pictures and words

looks a nice cage, what class are you competing in ? Is the engine staying the same?

more importantly what colour is it going to be ?[8D]

Believe it's a Safety Devices cage. Haven't decided what competition to do but some ideas, not sure when it's going to be ready though. Also intend to use it for track days and talking about taking it over to the Nurburgring as I have never been.

Plan A ... standard 2.4 E engine ... Plan B ... more powerful engine but not until next year.

As for colour ... still undecided ... still leaning to silver though as original colour.

On to the jig at the weekend so more pictures in a couple of weeks. Also currently building up the list of parts to buy for it. Quite a lot will have to come from the US so that may delay things but worth waiting.

Ian.

Excellent work again Ian [:)] Who supplied the cage? I'm wanting to fit one in an RS Rep I'm in the process of buying - I've talked to Robert at Gantspeed about a custom one - but yours looks very neat.

Philip

I'll find out about the cage for you ... it's one that's was fitted to another E that's recently been removed but the chap who got it for me still has contacts for Safety Devices cages ... it's a question of if they still make this one. Also thought about getting a custom one made, in fact I suspect spoke to the same chap as you but decided to go with this one as it was a lot cheaper being second hand and is in really good nick.

I think a custom one is about ÂŁ1800. They seem very busy at the moment with the start of the track season looming so don't know what the wait time is for these.

Ian.

A Custom Cages cage is about ÂŁ1000 fitted. I can supply a new Safety Devices 6 point bolt-in cage with removable door bars at ÂŁ517.62 plus VAT

Thanks Ian - I have a Safety Devices one in the barn that came out of the ex. Ronnie McCartney 1997 'Round Britain Historic' 2.0S I own (and will shortly be auctioning for charity).

I'm leaning towards a custom cage at the moment - when I was at Gantspeed about five years ago, Robert had built a stunning 3.0RS replica in white, with custom cage going through the bulkheads to the suspension mount tops - I really fancy one like this - for safety reasons - but my research indicates it'll prevent the car from being used in any historic motorsport []

Philip

Also thought about a through the bulkhead cage, or modifying the one I have, but you are right it restricts what you can do in it. Also for track I don't think it's worth it. The stresses put on the body is not enough to need it. Rallying is a different matter.

Must give you a call sometime Nick to see what sorts of parts you can supply generally.

Excellent work, Ian !! -

The only thing that puts me off doing something like this (911 or 914-6) is that 993s are available for similar money as a major rebuild costs, even TTs are not too far away ..

Keep it up !! Should we have a Register visit ?

cheers, Maurice [:D]

You are right ... you never make money by funding a restoration.

Have we got any 993 register visits planned this year BTW?

Nick, question for you. I saw a picture of the vivid green restoration you are doing and the front strut brace had what looked like additional bars welded between each end and the opposite front corner of the car. What is the benefit of this arrangement?

Ian.

triangulation

prevents 'twisting'. With a strut brace the shock towers can still 'twist'

good explanation here:

I understand that set up. Nick's car had the extra bars going forward to the corner past the battery box so it was triangulated horizontally not vertically. That's what I can't see the benefit of.

I assume you are not planning to use the car in any MSA scrutinied (if spelt right) events ? If you are , you might need to look at the size and thickness of your roll cage mounts - all covered in the famous blue book. Looks like good work , wish I was at your stage with mine ! Good luck.

Yes regs are 120sqcm main, 60sqcm rear brace. 3mm thick all bits. The rear brace and the front mount (not in yet) are the right size. The main rear foot mount is an old fitting and not technically big enough. Trying to find out if as it's in an old car it's OK or a bigger one needs fitting ... bit of a minefield.

Also may have to up the size of the pads attached to the rollcage itself but again regs seem vague if rollcage was approved before date x ...

Ian.

The aluminium triangulation is bolted in and would certainly improve the stiffness and crash protaction of the front of the car

Thanks for the picture Nick, it shows the design very clearly. Is anything similar done for the rear end?

Ian.

Onto the jig ...

Start with a large pile of bits and a set of plans. Think of it as trying to put together an IKEA flat pack or one of those executive logic puzzles you get from your gran at Christmas ... only much larger.

If we hadn't chosen the gearbox mounts as the starting point and picked up the turbo gearbox brackets instead of the standard car ones we probably would have finished relatively quickly.

As it was we spent the next hour wondering why all the front mounts were out by about an inch. It was as if the car had lost about an inch in the middle. After looking carefully for chain saw marks that might reveal a cut and shut or wondering if perhaps we had a special MWB model (medium wheel base) decided we should start again from the front this time. After the lightbulb moment of seeing the second set of gearbox brackets all became clear.

Here's some pictures of the car getting jigged up

There are a few more brackets to go on yet. It attaches to the car at seven points on each side - front torsion bar mount, front wishbone mount, top of the front towers, rear torsion bar mount, top of the rear towers, rear gearbox mount, rear engine mounts.
