A restoration in pictures and words

Here's some pics of the arch attached

The rear of the arch is still to be trimmed to the right length as we had them made slightly long at the rear and the joint is still to be finished but looking good.

Finally you can see how the skin of the door is like the surface of the moon!

New skins are to be fitted and here is one just arrived

These will be worked on next as well as flaring the glassfibre rear bumper to fit the new arches.

Hi Ian
This looks like a good project, and car looking good.
I have built a copy of my original st to race, and have held /looked at a set of original st steel arches with factory numbers still attached to one set.The owner would not part with either set,but did allow us to make a mould from his spare set.
You are welcome to have a look at these for the profile, also the original car is now sold and will be disapearing to Germany in about 3 weeks time. The arches on this car have been altered to suit 8 &10 wheels from its tarmac rallying days.
Worth a look before it goes, not sure where you are in the country.

Some more updates. Mostly tidying up odds and sods before the car is returned.

Rear arches are now fully fitted, trimmed and edges wired

Front wings. These are 'semi' ST arches as they are only flared to take 7 or 8" wheels not 9" wheels so don't flare out as much. Wanted something between the standard wing and an ST type flare so had to fabricate from scratch. New wired edge made then center of wing is flared out to attach to it then fillets front and back to make up the shape. Still a bit more panel beating required on these to get the shape just right.

Tank has been modified. Top was cut off standard tank and a new top made. This allows the existing bottom to be retained so standard fuel feeds and tank mounting brackets can be used. Being steel no undertray is required so the tank ends up about the same weight as an alloy tank plus underguard

The hole in the top allows the foam to be inserted. It will be covered by a fabricated cover which will also contain the sender unit mounting. This is the cover still work in progress without the sender unit mounting

Finally this shows the front cross brace and how the new tank fits beneath it

Tank capacity is equal to the original (maybe a bit more) and fills through the standard filler mechanism in the front wing. Spare wheel will sit against the cross brace allowing one to be carried when required.

The shell will now be washed to remove surface rust and returned. Probably take a few pics of the completed shell when it has and then that will be it for this thread. Will start a new one up in the new year when it gets to painting.

Ian.

Final post. Shell has been delivered all shiney and clean with all work completed. Shell feels very stiff even without the cage. Taken a sample of photo's showing the final shell to finish the thread.

[:)] Looking good.

Love the pictures and picking out some of the interesting cars in the background too. Should have a competition and see who can identify the most.

Ian

Are you going to paint or coat the shell over winter to stop surface rusting ?

Where is the car now - looks to be in interesting company.

Look forward to next years updates.

Ian

This is much better to see than following Ragley rubbish.....

Ian that's looking real good now I love the fuel tank..

Out of interest as I am about to use a tank sealing kit the baffel is that only later models mine is a 65.

I am trying out a different stuff to the por15 I used last time..

Gary, Ian, 912UK, Bootsy. Thx for the comments guys. Same applies to all the previous posters, comments have been appreciated :)

Gary. Some very nice cars in the various places it has been. Amazing what's out there being looked after by enthusiasts.

Ian. Car has a sort of phosphate coat at the moment which will protect it for a few weeks. Shortly going to go into very low humidity storage to try and preserve it. Depending what it looks like when it comes out will decide what further treatment or re-treatment is required and how to prepare it for paint. Car's in central Leicester at the moment at G.C.R.

912UK. Love the tank too. Very neat solution to getting the bracing plus a usable tank plus being able to carry a spare wheel. Still to be pressure tested to make sure no leaks!

Bootsy. You'll know the guys doing the recent work as they lurk over at your place ...

Be great if you could share the build up on DDK - we have a seperate section for Restoration threads and it's one of the most popular sections.

Wow this restoration is amazing [8|], I have restored 2 Land Rovers but your project makes my Landy's look like Mechano kits! The welding is amazing .
Best of luck with the project and I can't wait to see the final article!
