Advice needed on buying an 85' 944

ORIGINAL: Bloooor I might be a little tall as my hands on the steering wheel were catching my legs as i turned
That's a feature of the series 1 cars. The series 2 cars are a bit more accommodating for the larger driver, more space between the seat base and steering wheel.

Yes the steering column is raised and the seats lowered on series two cars. The steering wheel is off centre too (on both cars), which gives more leg room whilst the wheel is straight ahead.

I've had a search of which, to no avail, do you know if you can fit an S2 steering column to the Lux models or is there a way of adjusting the standard steering column height? I'm a little worried that's it really low for me, i moved the seat back (when i went out for a test drive) but didn't want to be too far away from the steering wheel. There must be someone else with similar problems to driving the Lux model and being near 6ft in height... Thanks

It's not about your height overall: it's more to do with length of leg. I can't drive an early car, but fit comfortably into a late one.

Well that's a little concerning as i did struggle when steering.. Is there nothing you can do to change it or higher the standard one?

You can fit the seats froma series two car, which are lower. The steering column is the same on all cars, but the bracket which hold it is slightly different. You cant raise the column withouth cutting the dash on a series one car (Lux is a trim level not a model designation). If you are struggling with this then Id suggest late seats and a smaller offset steering wheel. I have two Momo 'Race' wheels (now called Tuner, I believe). One is a D32 and the other a D35. The 350mm wheels mounting is central but the 320mm wheels mounting is offset by around 1" which give a good deal more legroom. The original wheel is offset too, although it is quite large, so an aftermarket wheel may well be decreasing your legroom!

If you're going for an off-brand wheel solution (Momo) then they also do an eccentric adapter which allows you to offset a Momo wheel http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Momo-Steering-Wheel-Hub-Eccentric-Spacer-Kit-/190731362396?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2c6879a05c Fitted to the end of the standard Momo boss this extends the steering boss a bit allowing you to adopt a straighter leg driving position and raises the wheel in the straight-ahead position.

I was thinking about going down to different steering wheel route but i really want to keep the car as OEM as possible, maybe even get a steering wheel from a different model but so it still looks retro enough to fit in with the rest of the car.. I would also like to keep the seats too for the same reasons.. I wonder if i could try and get hold of or possibly make some extra low seat frames/mounts to lower the original series 1 seats, does this sound feasible? I will have a look through the forums now too and see if anybody else has every suggested it

I seem to remember that 3 spoke wheel is larger than the 4 spoke "lozenge" My first 924S had the 3 spoke wheel & was much tighter than my second which had the lozenge. Didn't some cars get fitted with blocks to raise the seats a bit? Might be worth checking as well.

A Momo wheel was a dealer option I believe. Originality is seldom adversely affected by fitting later seats. Its a common improvement because they wear so much better and the two most common fabrics (pinstripe and script) were available in both.

OEM was the wrong word, I would like to keep things 'Porsche' is what i meant, so the dealer option of a Momo steering wheel (and with being pinstripe or script) shouldn't be a problem keeping with the retro spec of the car. Is eBay going to be the best bet? I'm unfortunately not made of money so things will have to be second hand when it comes to mods

I just looked at the ad for the car you viewed - it had the 3 spoke wheel. Try and find a series 1 (or a 924S) with a lozenge to compare..

Buying Momo steering wheels off eBay isnt guaranteed to be the best way. They seem to sell for a good deal when many have dried cracked and worn out leather. Id buy a boss used, but Id hold out for a new wheel which will probably offer better value.

Have you seen Elliot's post under the "wanted" section....a well known enthusiast on here, and he says he has 2 x 944s and a 924 for sale. Can't comment, of course, but worth a phone call?

Thanks for the post Graham, appreciate your thought of me trying to find my perfect 944 [:)] I just looked in his'Easter Special' thread with what he has for sale and it reads.. a 1984 red non sunroof 944 1984 silver sunroof 944 1988 red 924s silver 1983 944 (no interior) Unfortunately for me, this doesn't fit the bill as i'm after a white 944 but on the plus side, he really does have heaps of things for pre '85 944's! I also have seen another 944 (which really couldn't be any further away from me.. lol) Is there anybody on here that lives close to Folkestone? WOuld it maybe be better to put up another thread asking the question? Or is that being too cheeky..? (I honestly don't mind getting the train down, i do feel pretty cheeky asking people to go out of their way to have a look at a car for me, but it REALLY would be very helpful) Thanks again for the comments, Adam

I may of found the one i've been looking for, it's not immaculate but it's well within my budget and with money left over for parts that are needed. These are some replies I've had and a link at the bottom with close up pics she sent via email. This car is sadly being sold as I do not have the time to drive it. I have owned the car for 5 years and in that time it has been kept in the garage and has not been driven in the rain. It has electric sunroof which can be removed with original cover. I have a lot of receipts and service details along with the MOT`S. Currently it has no road tax, but has just passed the MOT with small advisory: minor leak of exhaust gases, handbrake within limits. It is in great shape considering its age and has been well looked after by myself and the other 4 owners. Currently it has a personalised plate, which I may take off. Mileage: 106,442 MOT Expiry: 03/2014 1984 Lux in White The clutch plate was done 1990 Water pump 1999 Belt tensioners 1999 In 1999 the car had 102500 on the clock so it has done approx 4000 miles since that. The sills were changed in 98, just found the paperwork. We have had a low offer, we would really like the car to go to an enthusiast given that most of the car is original. We would be happy to get £1700 given that the pump may need changing. (I mentioned about the belts/waterpump will need changing due to it being 3-4 years since it was last changed) Also the ignition coil and crankshaft sensors have just been replaced with its mot. also the car has not been driven around in winter for years as it has been garaged by us and previous lady that owned it" Only real concern is the sills (through the vents and between the 2 layers, even though repaired, you can still see quite a bit of rust) Can anyone spot any major concerns? Interior all looks fine too and pictures posted, car looks well looked after (close up pics of the wheels looking all shiny too) Thanks for your time, Adam https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=3e0373aacecedb33&id=3E0373AACECEDB33%21203&Bsrc=SkyMail&Bpub=SDX.SkyDrive&sc=Photos&authkey=!ADvC_7Q9hqiI2Fs

The pump wears out, but it doesnt age and neither do the rollers, so youll be looking at a simple belt change in all likelihood. Sills over the top of the others is a bodge, but it isnt uncommon.

At that sort of money, if it drives well, is tidy and (nearly) everything works... buy it! [:D] You want a white one - what's the worst that can happen? Rust is fixable although very expensive in extreme cases - but looks worth a punt. Keep a grand spare for belts / fettling - If I were you I'd get the vendor to drive it to a garage (of your choosing) to get the belts done, you pay for that on top of the agreed price so you don't risk driving it home on old belts.
