Advice needed on buying an 85' 944

It does look nice, and sensible money. 15" teledials on a square dash? I don't recall seeing many cars with those although I just checked PET and there was an ET23 7J teledial option. no mention of belts etc.. All depends how it drives

23mm offset ATS phone dials cme of 1986 mode year 944s. They also fit 944 Turbos and have a 951 part number prefix.

That car looks stunning from the pics. I'd be down there tomorrow to have a look. There are very few series one 944s in half-decent condition, so you are seriously limiting your options if you insist on one colour. Don't get too hung up on the belts, unless they are overdue of course. They are a service item, and even if they are recently changed they come around all too soon. Nice if it's had the big belt service with WP etc., but not a deal-breaker. I'd be more interested in seeing one-off big bills for clutch, HG, brake and fuel lines etc. to minimise the possible expenses over the next few years.

"yes there is a lot of mots to prove miles are real. i will be home on the weekend can send you some pics then the car is rot free you can scrape some under seal off the bottom and see the metal is silver and lift the carpet in the rear you can see in the rear wings no rust or rot and were the spare type is to again not rust and engine bay to again not rot atall will send you pics when i get back home i have seen a good few 944s that are rotten this one is very clean even exhust system is rust free" This is horrible now, I really have set my heart on a white exterior and also with the pinstripe brown and black seats.. but how long before one pops up that is up to scratch... I will go and view it over the weekend (if he still has it that is!) see how it drives, check out all the areas I can think of to check, check receipts to back up his info and go from there.

If this one is as good as it looks, buy it. Keep it well-maintained and it'll sell on again easily. If a perfect white one appears, you can always snap it up and sell the bronze one? Or even buy a white one as a project, and do it up without the pressure of needing to drive it. Multiple 944 ownership is not unheard of! [:)]

Makes perfect sense. If it's as good as it looks and sounds then you're not going to lose money on that one.

Haha that would be a dream scenario right there, even buy a turbo s2 engine for the white one too? ;) I just mentioned to my mechanic friend (wing man) about doing the same, if the right white car appears then i could sell the bronze and live happily ever after, would of also learnt a lot from ownership of the bronze one and any possible faults to look out for etc could work... need more money! lol Just awaiting his reply with info about the belts and pics of the underside.. Thanks again for all the help, Porsche owners seem to be a top bunch! [:)] P.S you may have already seen this, but i was literally blown away by it, so inspirational. 'URBAN OUTLAW is a portrait of Magnus Walker, the rebel Porsche customizer who turned a hobby into an obsession, and an obsession into a successful business. From a workshop in downtown Los Angeles, Magnus obsessively harvests fragments from donor 911s, grafting them onto vintage frames to create one-off automobiles with the spirit of Ferdinand Porsche but an ethos entirely his own.' - http://www.reelhouse.org/mos/urbanoutlaw/urbanoutlaw

I would ask why he selling and how long he owned the car for a traveled. Looks very clean, wonder why it was dried out?

I had to read it twice as well T3rra, the wording being all squished together made my eyes sore.. It says he wet vac'd the seats then made sure they were 100% dry with the humidifier (or that's how i read it anyway) This is the last reply from him, I don't really understand the first part if anybody wants to call to ask specifics (instead of telling me what to say then i relay it back on here ha) "you see seen when cam belts and balance belts was done show miles it was done to i have bill for the front seal part to there is lost of mots to show miles the engine used no oil all or water what so ever never had to top them up there is no white smoke from exhurst or blue smoke for that matter the engine does not rattle clunk or miss in anyway the steering does not judder or pull in anyway you can take hands of wheel on the motoway and the car wont go off to one side there is a tiny whine form the box not loud in any way when you come off the power very sharp but you dont here it round town i looked a 4 944s and all of them whined form the gear very loud this one was by far the quietest nearly all 944s do this it changed gear with no probs atall there is new number plates on car with porsche logo only put them on other day so there not in the pics on piston heads there is spare rear wiper blade you can buy them anyone even from porsche people list them but you get sent the wrong blade i have a new one there very hard to get hold off there is a full folder of paper work with the car also has a alarm to for the money am asking you will not find a cleaner one i looked a a few and this one stands out by a mile from what i have seen and its super cheap to if you need more info email me of you can fone me if you wish 07922 683 454"

Do not be concerned by the "gearbox whine" unless it is excessively loud. Most '44s gear boxes become a little vocal and you'll probably find a change of gear-box oil will quieten that down nicely. Looking better with every photo. You really, really need to go and kick the tyres on that thing.

Adam, I thought you would have bought the white one in Folkestone, for the money it was worth a punt, this gold one has turned up and looks a blinder - and cheap for the condition and it has been very well looked after. Treat it as fate I am going to say you would be stark raving mad not to buy it, ok not the colour you wanted but everything else about it should far outway that!

+1 [:)] Assuming it's as good in the flesh, of course. Reading that reply from the seller made my eyes bleed though!

My eyes are still bleeding.. I was planning with T3rra who kindly said he would view it next week so that could of been the plan but then after a chat with him on the phone, I agreed the best thing to do was to just give a little more time, look out on the forum for anybody selling up (more chance of being a genuine enthusiast) and to also check Pistonheads (which i had forgotten about since they changed all their website and started charging to sell cars, i held a grudge ha (lesson learnt, NEVER HOLD A GRUDGE!) The one in Folkestone was just to far away and too many 'Umms' and 'Arrs' about it so it never really grabbed me. I'm arranging to view it over the weekend, sent a further email regarding what he said about belts etc so all is looking good! :)

Take your mechanic friend and go and see it asap. Also take a bundle of cash 'cos unless there's something hugely wrong mechanically you'll be wanting to at the very least put down a deposit.

I've been putting off replying as i feel like i'm letting people down.. haha I decided i'm going to be stubbon (like my Dad) and go for the one i've always liked (white, <85 square dash, brown/leather interior, enthusiast owner, minimal rot etc) and so didn't go and see the car (I said to myself if it is immaculate, like described, and drives brilliantly etc then i'm going to be gutted if the white 944 i hopefully find in the future doesn't feel as good as this one) I still want to test drive others but none i consider to be top examples (unless it's everything i'm looking for) another reason as well is that my budget has now been reduced slightly as i've needed to buy a run about car (bought a 1985 Nissan Sunny SGL 1.5 Auto) haha, it's a tidy little car, only paid £450 and it's £300 a year to insure but obviously this has taken a chunk out of the money I had a side for the Porsche, I felt this was a better option for me at the minute as i needed to get to and from work and just not having the freedom to drive was killing me.. I apologised to the seller for possibly wasting his time and gave him my reasons, will still be looking out for the right 944 in hope it pops up one day.
