Another Cayman

Ralph,

I suspect that if you contact ClassicLine if/when you’re approaching your mileage limit it’ll be possible to extend the cover by paying an additional premium.

Jeff

Jeff,

I'm sure that would be a possibility but they did say it was a Policy policy limit, if you get my drift so maybe not so flexible, but that's for the future.

Other aspects of ClassicLine no tracker requirement, they took note of the non-stock exhaust tips but were not concerned about fitting PFC brake pads.

The JCR noise reduction tips (for 90dB Thruxton static limit) arrived. The tips require a specific adapter to attach to the back box. I guess this is so that they can be attached to different JCR exhaust systems. Each tip/adapter assembly weighs 1.12 kg. I'll weigh the stock tips when the car arrives. Question: weight difference + longer lever effect = OK stress?

IMG-1758.jpg

and having two tips and adapters make for a more expensive product than the GT3 version. Man maths work on this (Thruxton £199 v Silverstone £550 per track day) meaning breakeven point is 8 track days at Thruxton.

Ralph,

That’s a fair bit of weight to cantilever off the system but I’m sure you’ll be OK. Do you fit them at the circuit? If so, the smooth road surface will be to your advantage … it’s not as though you’re going off-road with a lot of mass jangling around! 😀

I’m also with ClassicLine on a limited mileage policy and when I asked the same question I was told that I could just pay an additional premium. However, I’m on a 3k mileage limit (having reduced it from 5k), so you may have to look forward to an interesting conversation with them down the road.

Jeff

Jeff,

JCR say they have customers who leave them on all the time. I would use them at Thruxton and Goodwood (on 96dB drive by days) but no need at Silverstone, Castle Combe or others I am likely to frequent. I'll make a judgement first based on ease of fitting/removal then after each track day. I always keep OEM tips and spanners in my toolbox just in case.

Am late to this Ralph but what a great looking car!! congratulations Snowy

ps i use the 991 down turns from JCR in titanium really well made and vital for some venues (Prescott, Shelsley) but not Spa, silverstone or Loton park (?)!.

It is so good to see an enthusiast get a GT car….wishing you many years of miles and smiles.

Great Looking car Ralph.

I'm very interested in your insurance quotations. The annual premiums including track days have increased hugely in recent years. I was with both Marsh and Manning in my Cayman GTS days which included track days, until Aviva stepped out of the car club market with Marsh.

Having retired from track day participation my A110 is currently insured with Churchill with a maximum of 10,000 miles per annum for £416 annual premium. No tracker required either unlike the Marsh and Manning quotes. I expect the insurance premiums to increase substantially come my renewal in September.

You could do no worse than give the NFU a call (these guys cover most of the farming equipment up and down the country as well as home insurance and cars) Been with them now for 3+ yrs now and I would say my current policy is belt and braces for my Porsche.

Robert,

Unfortunately regular insurers don’t offer track day cover and that is all the car is used for.

With LV I can insure all 4 cars for £743 but would need separate cover for track days. I have found Moris who offer a 10 event annual track day policy but am waiting for them to come back to me tomorrow with price and details; but I will do more than 10 so nothing is simple.

Don't Moris have a value limit, Ralph? I seem to remember looking at them last year and it was £70k-ish from memory.

Spotted on Facebook, ready for Monday..

Can cover up to full cost less excess, at a cost.

Back home - note the car's close but not quite right PTS against the sample floor.

I was pleased with the wheel colour, I had dithered over Silver for greater contrast but Platinum looks good. I should also say Topaz pdf + ceramic coating is miles better than the job Reep did on my old GT3.

I've been setting up the car this afternoon with the main task of fitting the JCR tips.

The JCR tips weigh 1.1kg, the OEM tips weigh 0.7kg, both are each tip

IMG-1791.jpg

The OEM tips which are manufactured by Remus are secured with a 6 star #12 screw, the length of the stub tube on which the tips are fixed is 50mm.

IMG-1786.jpg

The JCR tips are secured with #10 regular headed bolts and it is quite difficult to ensure the tips use the entire length of the 50mm stub tube. It took me three attempts to get each one securely seated and bolted up.

View of the tips from the rear

IMG-1792.jpg

They remind me of the exhaust on a TVR. They also protrude further beyond the rear PU than the GT3 equivalent.

Off to Thruxton tomorrow to get a sound test courtesy of Javelin who are running a track day.

I suspect I shall feel nervous running these as a permanent fitment, mainly due to uncertainty as to whether they will stay secured. I did run the car for some time to get heat into the system and further tightened the bolts, time or tomorrow will tell. I will take them off for my first track day at Castle Combe on April 25 but put them back on for the back to back Goodwood and Thruxton May 4 & 5 track days.

A reminder that exhaust fixings get very rusty - this was a 718 GT4 on the ramp at the Modified Register meeting at RPM last Saturday.

I'm thinking that lithium grease might be suitable to reduce the rust on exhaust bolts, any thoughts?

Complete Grease Guide - Workshop Greases UK (greasemonkeydirect.com)

For anti-seize - Copper grease ... slacken off fittings, apply where possible and remake

For anti-corrosion, wire brush externals and apply a thin coating of copper or aluminium grease

Ralph copper grease is good up to c 1000 degrees C, I use it on exhaust manifold studs/nuts etc on my old cars. Snowy

Ralph,

Those JCR tips look OK to me, even if you plan to keep them on all the time. 400gm extra mass and a slight increase in cantilever length shouldn’t pose too much of a problem, but best to keep a check on bolt tightness until you have confidence in the fitment.

The motorcycle fraternity like the corrosion-prevention properties of ACF-50 spray, so that could be worth a try.

Great body/wheel colour combination BTW. A tricky toss-up between Platinum and Silver wheels though. 🤔

Jeff

Thanks Jeff,

JCR exhaust tips:

Good news, they didn't fall off.

Not so good news, the car tested at "93, nearer 94dB"

"not passed Sir but would you like to have a couple of laps to see if it is too loud as we normally allow some leeway on Porsches because all the noisy parts are at the back and drive by is less of a problem"

Puzzled because manual one was 92dB at Goodwood and Castle Combe.

A 4.0 GTS Cayman was 92.7dB and a 991.2 GT3 RS (@4k revs) with large diameter tips was 92.2dB and were allowed on for this 90dB static test day.

IMG-1796.jpg

Anyway the plan is to leave them on for Castle Combe April 25 and see what they measure them at and then take them off and re-test with OEM tips - the noise tester there is helpful, as is the Thruxton guy.

Until then, getting some running in miles done.

Ralph
