Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

you get 1 years warranty when you pay the £995 extra.

the car just seems uber cheap to me when you have an OPC car up for £50k about the same spec.

hard to say, the money is tempting as always, but if one loves the car why sell it as it's free motoring for at least 2 years.

One would have to say the cars not sitting well with the buyers to want to sell it imo, we see that with GT3 sales, Cayman R sales, 987.2 Spyder sales, GT4 sales etc etc people think they want a more hardcore car then cannot live with them !

I have chatted to people with the 981 Spyders and while it's far softer than the 987.2 Spyder to live with people still say , not an every day usable car !

GT3 owners are the best, hence you see cars with 7 or 8 owners, people just cannot live with them ! you get people will say black is white with a GT3 then go and fit softer shocks etc after telling the forum it's perfect !

As you well know if the 981 Spyder had an electric roof I would have gone for it, but for me a manual roof and NO easy boot access ruins the car for me on a personal level, and as it's not as hardcore as the 987.2 Spyder for the fun weekend car, but still not a do it all daily, I ruled it out.

It's still a great car as they all are but it's a small market to fit in with peoples lives, many people seem to be going more luxury for the main car and more hardcore for the garage car, Macan sales are on the up as are Caterham sales !!! as an example ! but that's too soft and too hard for me also !

my garage weekend car is my 987.2 Spyder , it gets little use (although used it twice this week) and still on 13k miles at 6 years old, if I did not have that it would be a Elise 250 Cup in the garage. some thing just a tad harder than the 981 Spyder for those real driver drives :) but not Atom,Caterham levels.

I have always said it's a car a bit in no mans land, give it the wife and she would prob hit you having a manual roof in todays every increasing rain showers !!! 2016 IS NOT SPYDER WEATHER :-( any Spyder !!! these on and off showers just make you keep the car at home.

A 981 Boxster GTS fits more people lives more of the time and CAN BE that 1 car you own. the wife can use the electric roof and the bloke can spec it with the 20mm sports sus, win win :)

I hate to say it but most of these cars are more trophy cars GT4 inc ie cars to be seen in and people lust after, they are not the best drivers cars and are not the best luxury cars, so they have to be trophy feel good cars !!! :-/

That's a very fair assessment MrD it's a difficult one. One wants Sporty but useable.

If the next Spyder has an electrical roof I think it's a good thing. Yeah yeah I know it adds weight but much easier for the ladies and our current climate of roof down roof up.

In an ideal world one of each but not possible for most of us.

All in all pretty spot on MrD

I think Mr D has a point with the 981 GTS comment as I am very impressed with mine which has the 20mm Sus and the other sports car bits manual, buckets etc etc.

The car comes alive much earlier than my 991GT3 so you can enjoy the car on our roads and keep your licence. I have this year been on the club trip to the IOM, several car club weekends, and Le Mans with the rest of the week driving through France. The car can be the one car fits all it does everything very well just like the Spyder and you can keep those showers away.

I was a little unsure when I bought it coming from more powerful cars but those fears were unfounded it is a practical fun car and very much a drivers car with the right spec.

I dont know how people select their cars but I buy cars on the basis of three 'S's

1. Sight

2. Sound

3 Speed

I would guess that these 3 play a big part in most folks decision when buying. For me the highest percentage will be put on 1. Sight However, those who like to drive fast would probably rate 3 more heavily than 1. Sight

The down side to the GTS for me is the hood.[&:] Yes the Hood! [8|] I know I'm lucky in that I dont need my Porsche for everyday use so practicability is not an issue.

All Porsche models 356/911/944 Boxster etc etc (all models) even upto the new cars in Porsche Centre today suffer this. Porsche designers have never tackled the fact you can see the hood when its down. For me its just spoils the Sight of the car.

So not only dont you see the hood on the Spyders, you also get the added bonus of the humps.[:)] Top marks for 1.Sight[;)]

I agree with your chosen 3 but must add the other very important factors for me now Porsche have become mass produced depreciating cars like all the other mass produced cars on offer today and that's "Exclusivity" by limited numbers as well as design features which for me just adds to the pride of ownership these slightly quirky examples bring to any party not to mention the 3.8L n/a power source another first in the 20 year old mid engine 2 seater model [8D]

1: sight, not really that's quite a way down my list other wise I would have owned an Alfa at some point !

2: sound, well not at all, other wise I would buy a Mazza

3: Speed, again over rated, all these cars are too fast for the road, it takes a while to realise that and you need to have owned really fast cars. but again speed is WAY down my list but you have to tick the speed box and get it out the system.

my list is

1: Badge ! as I am not driving a Skoda, Seat, etc etc how ever good the car is I am a badge snob.

2: has to be a 2 seater, I think that shows you are real about owning a sports car and not under the thumb and stuck carting kids about or drunk mates !

3: it has to feel like a sports car to drive which means it has to have the steering feel for me.

4: resale :-( I am not a rich man, I don't and never buy cars which fall off the price scale or if they do I buy then 3 years later at the fallen price.

fav current car 458 Speciale :)

John you hit the nail the nail on the head of WHY people buy Spyders. Daro, backed up with the rest. The way it looks, the exclusivity & quirkiness. It's a good enough driver's car for someone buying on that premise. These aren't people who buy GT3s then find they're too hard core. These aren't people perplexed about whether the car is too inconvenient or too easy to live with. Actually, these people bought the 987 Spyder on exactly the same premise. I'm not saying all did, but I'm one of those who did and John just said he did, and Daro.

It's like a Speedster buyer; he's not looking for the convenience of a cabriolet. He's looking for quirkiness, exclusivity and how it appeals to his eye; less concerned about how it feels to drive vs other more hard order models and he hasn't confused himself that he was getting an open top GT3 just because Porsche said the Speedster roof saves weight.

But this shows one of the main appeals for me. I sometimes gravitate towards a car that divides opinion and not everyone will like. I like something that is not too middle of the road or fulfills general appeal, because I don't want to see one on every corner. I don't want everyone to like it. I don't want, from a distance it looks like the standard model, because I want it to look different. I was glad that there was enough people who had enough reason why they wouldn't have one. OK when I had my 987 on Porsche club event display and people would come over and ask me what's the roof like to live with and how does it drive, I'd explain all those things and how the lowered suspension makes it feel, the weight saving etc. But they didn't come over because it looked like a standard Boxster that might have been lowered, might have had a 10hp upgrade & therefore might be the one that is one of best driver's cars, which is all true about it. They came over because it's the exclusive one. There'll no doubt be a 718 sports suspension option that will make a 718S Cayman 99% as enjoyable as a GT4 and faster than a GT4 around a track, without a big wing or explanation of what a big wing and adjustable suspension and stickier tyres are for. But the GT4 will garner more appeal, even if someone says the 718S is the better choice because it does the same on easier-to-live-with tyres and suspension. The GT4 owner is not bothered that most would prefer the easier option that does the same thing.

Geoff has quite a unique GTS. I'd actually love to drive that car & if such a example was on sale nearby I'd go book a test drive just to get the experience and take a look at it. But not many GTSs were spec'd that way, and if Geoff were to say he was particularly drawn to that specific car I would get that, because I would be. But how most GTSs are spec'd, I'd rather have a Spyder.

As I said a trophy look at me cars :)

the GT4 attracts rubber neckers every where I go, it's crazy to watch people staring blind at the car, even to a point other cars move lanes, stop on round abouts, follow you, etc etc

i sort of like it, but am starting to dislike the stupid questions every time I stop.

1: nice gt3

2: I bet that cost a lot

3: how fast does it go

4: is that a 911

5: Rev it

i Don,t think anyone has said cool GT4 yet

and even if I say it's a GT4 people reply with is that a 911.

Fit girls seem to like it though so always some plus sides.
