Spydermen . Well at last the car turned a wheel today ......sun was shining for a few hours this afternoon so decided maybe this was a window off opportunity to take it out . First thoughts wonder how long it will be before i get points on my clean blemish free licence[] it is quick very quick compared to my last Boxster .Getting used to the gearbox as it has been tiptronic in the last 4 Porsches i have owned . It is happy to plod along in 6th and when the loud pedal is pressed it still goes and goes . Very little wind noise even at limits ,a lot depends from which direction it is blowing from, as it was a relatively shortish run out it was perfectly acceptable on a motorway it may be different.Seating will have to get position that suits best as i tend to sit well forward short legs. At first i had it in normal drive then switched to Sport Mode with the sports Box on what a difference it makes it feel like two different cars not checked on what the difference will make to MPG but i think it will be permanently in this position sound awesome especially on change down . Not really a test drive as such but more a familiarization with the car and look forward to more decent days .The down side had to clean it as was covered in white dust .still need a down pour to wash away all this salt .So it is tucked up in in its bed till the next time hopefully not too long to wait . Brian
First 2 buttons pressed in my car once I have started it up are sports button and sports exhaust, much prefer the feel of the throttle pedal in sports mode, it appeals to my delicate right foot! Glad you got the chance to get out in it.
Well Done Brian - At least the weather was kind enough for you to take a run. Since driving mine home and taking it to the Secure storage site I have not been out in mine. I have copied my first Impression drive below - much like yours. As you said I had owned a series of Boxster (all manual) and all S models. In fact I still have my heavyweight Spyder but none of these bare any resemblance to the new Spyder. Other than when you are sitting in one you know your in a Boxster! I drove a Cayman R for a couple of days and I think this is the nearest thing I can compare the Spyder with. I had a clean driving licence prior to the ownership of the Spyder. I was in such a rush to get down and be the first to view the Car I got a speeding fine travelling down to view the car. [] Anyway enjoy![] ------------------- First impressions.. Well at last one had come up with the spec I required. It was a long list of requirements and having seen the Red Nottingham car which was a close fit I thought that was as near as we may get in red. Only a guess but I expected one to come up in Black since I get the feeling more Black than Red Spyders. However, I was prepared to sit out for a long time - years if need be. I was going to collect on the Monday but snow prevented that. A new date was made for Thursday, Valentines day. Up early, read the forum, thanks for the poems, wrote one and off to catch the Bus to Oxford. The bus went across country Milton Keynes, Buckingham etc on the A421 and this is the route I intended to take home. It had snowed and rained the Wednesday night and the roads were wet, filthy with salt and dirt and that started me thinking should I drive home that route? Perhaps the M40 down to the M25 and up the A1 was a better route! The sun was due to come out and these roads would be dry! Arrived at Oxford and a very smooth transaction and it was time to drive home. I jumped behind the wheel and set off - looked in the mirror and saw the seller had taken out his camera for his farewell shot! I stopped a little way up the road at a garage. I parked on the forecourt just to make my self comfortable and more familiar with the controls. I adjusted the seat, mirrors and steering wheel and felt really comfortable and at home. All the switches etc were to hand and I could see all the dials. Then I saw the the switch with the 'Twin Tailpipes' That made the decision easy, it was home via the M40. Forecast was for sun for the rest of the day but heavy clouds were hovering and I was temped to drop the hood but didn't. So away we went mainly dual carriage way all the way home. The gear change was very crisp, with the sort shift you could run up and down the gears very quickly. Torque was great and engine was tight and very responsive to the slightest touch on the throttle. No much steering to be done on a motorway but I could feel that the steering was light and the car went exactly where you pointed it. We needed some fuel, pulled into motorway services and whilst paying noticed three people gathered around the car comparing notes. Now one of the real influences for me taking this route home could be put to the test. The Hatfield Tunnel. I took the slip Road down to the tunnel and reached for three switches - one PSE and both window down! The road was not busy and I pulled into the third lane, changed down and entered the tunnel. Well how good was that! A slip road at each end of the tunnel takes you up to a roundabout. Well I could not pass up the chance to hear that sound again, so round we went a couple of times North and South through the tunnel. A further Tunnel on the A505 at Baldock doubled the pleasure. In no time we had arrived home safely - it was bubble bath time, a quick couple of photos and time to take care of my other Valentine! _____________________________ Regards John - RO Region 24 Cambs and BedsORIGINAL: kitchens Spydermen . Nice to see you finally got her back out which reminds me of a similar situation when I got my car back in February 2011! I took delivery at my house and then went straight back to bed with flu [] By the time I was up and running the weather wasn't so it was a good few weeks before I actually got to do what you just did [] Wait until you get the sun cap off and the sun glasses on it won't be too long now [8D] I know your a former tip man but you have one of the nicest stick shifts and clutch action to get use too but the driver involvement is really all part of the Spyder package IMO
A bit of a Valentines Day Massacre for your driving licence but to get that beauty a small price to pay in the bigger picture [&o]ORIGINAL: jdpef356 I had a clean driving licence prior to the ownership of the Spyder. I see we are back to breast's again [] Notice that there are now 7Spyder for sale at present .2 private . 2 independents. 3 Porsche opc. 3 Black. 4 White . 2 PDK with Bucket Seats . 1 PDK Sport Seats 1 Manual Bucket Seats 3 Manual Sport Seats. Mileage varies from 4k -11k Prices from £36-£42 the Independents are the cheapest by around £2k.Nice to see private buyers holding up the prices.I am sure all will find new homes once the Summer arrives whenever that is . At least Rob is getting a decent if not cold day for his visit to Edinburgh before the snow arrives yet again on Friday . Brian
Brian I know it is early days but do you think you will get into a manual box after 4 auto's[&o] The seats are excellent for taller folk as they sit lower down and give more headroom than the heated sports option but I am sure you will adapt as they are very supportive chairs providing you are not forced to sit further forward than is comfortable With your selection above I think the wrapped example will struggle at any price[] Independents that aren't 100% Porsche seem to have little success selling these Spyders[:'(] Privates need to be priced keenly or they need to have something totally unique for sale like John's no mileage example[] OPC's offer the comfort of the 2 year warranty and often for a very small premium over the alternatives[8D]ORIGINAL: kitchens Notice that there are now 7Spyder for sale at present .2 private . 2 independents. 3 Porsche opc. 3 Black. 4 White . 2 PDK with Bucket Seats . 1 PDK Sport Seats 1 Manual Bucket Seats 3 Manual Sport Seats. Safely arrived at Edinburgh - to discover a red Spyder in the forecourt. Thought Brian had come out to say hello. Coffee very nice at OPC and Jamie has found a truly stunning 997, as new throughout. Pics to follow, no wifi at the moment! Beautiful day but temperature hovering between 1 and 3 degrees so roof has stayed up!
Was it as nice as this RED example[]ORIGINAL: flat6 Enjoy the convoy journey home. The red Spyder you saw - is it for sale?
Hi Brian Nice to hear you finally got to take it out for a spin. The word familiarisation is right. If you're anything like me, you'll grow into the car and explore it's capabilities more and more. Hats off to you for going back to manual after 4 auto's. Or are other cars in your fleet manual? John you must be itching to get out in it you already completed your familiarisation laps on a decent length journey home[]. Given that you were fast - too fast[] on journey to view the car, you might want to know that in your even faster Spyder, there is a speed limit feature in the controls. You can set a speed limit and it'll beep when you exceed it. I set that up for a while when I got mine[]ORIGINAL: jdpef356Well Done Brian - At least the weather was kind enough for you to take a run.
