Balljoint questions.

I also wondered about this recently...

Paragon Products have a tech article on converting the 1987+ front struts to Koni Adjustable by cutting up your existing strut - http://www.tech-session.com/kb/index.php?page=index_v2&id=69&c=4

Cheers

These apply to the M030 struts as the shock absorber is integral to the strut so when you need to replace you have to replace the whole strut at a cost of just under £400 a side. For non-M030 struts you can just buy the shock absorber insert for around £80 each. Looks like a good little kit if it works. Has anyone got any experience of it?

Are you sure it doesn't apply to all post 86 struts? I thought pre 86 (steel front wishbone) you could get inserts but after I believed they are sealed units.

the actual paragon site (not tech-session) specifies "late 944 and 968 sealed struts". I'm also not convinced that this is for the M030. partly because the struts used are not those with the adjustable perches a-la M030, and partly because I know Jason religiously marks his parts suitable for M030.

Maybe you'r right. Although you wouldn't have the adjustable perches as the kit is intended to replace the strut internals. But I suppose if the shockers are non adjustable then they wont be M030. In anycase my '87 alloy wishbone car definately has inserts.

Hey all,

Apologies for resurrecting this thread again [8|].

I just bought some used 968 control arms from ebay and wanted to check if the ball joints are worn out before I fit them. I can wiggle the ball joint by hand fairly easily, is this ok ? the boots are fine with no tears and otherwise the arms look fine, they even have the brake air ducts attached ;)

I have my control arms off and I am just wondering how do you tell if the balljoints are knackered?
I can move the pin quite freely, with just a bit of resistance. Can't really move it up or down though.
The seals aren't cracked or split, just don't want to put them back on if I am going to have to take them off again..

Thanks

AFAIK, you should be really struggling to move the joint. it does support a ton and a half of car, so I would think our puny arms whould make hard work of it. (Unless both of you are built like american wrestlers...? [;)] )

but I'm sure someone who's eminently more qualified to answer will pipe up! [:D]

Didn't Bert say on Titanic a few days ago that you have to fit them to know if they are good?

Hi Fen,

Yes, I fitted my O/S 968 Control arm on the weekend and the ball pin could be moved by hand fairly easily. After fitting it feels much better than the original control arm (ball pin was more difficult to move on old arm). I think maybe that the hardness of the bushing has an effect on how easily the ball pin can be moved ? (I had glass polymer bushes on my old arm).
