Bilstein sport shocks - what springs?

Hi Paul,

I haven't decided yet, have only just dug the kit out of the garage roof this evening. I've found three sets of springs 200, 500 and 600, I think the 200 will be fine on the front but the 500's may be a bit stiff on the rear.

I need to have a word with Steve at Jaz next week to see what he thinks.
 
I now have a set of Eibach springs which I'll hopefully get round to fitting on the car this weekend..

Front 200-60-0040 which translates to 200mm long 60mm wide and the 0040 = 228lbs don't know how 40 = 228 but it just does!
Rear 170-60-0070, so 170mm long and this time 70 = 400lbs

Plus 50-60-0020 tender springs all round 20 = 114lbs.

I'm hoping it won't be too low. There is an amount of adjustment, probably about 40-50 mm so it should be ok.

One question for those of you with Bilsteins H6 shocks, do they have two rings (the bit the spring sits on) for the height adjustment or one? I only have one on mine so I was wondering how you lock it up as you would if you had two rings?
 
Hi Richard,
Only have the one ring per shock. When the springs take the weight the rings are quite tight to turn on the fine thread.
A good point you raise and a locking ring would make sense, however I can only assume that the friction between the ring and thread plus the load on each corner holds it in place.
 
Thanks for checking Paul. I wanted to make sure I wasn't supposed to have two as some bits were raided off the shocks when they were switched them for JRZs on my race car.

Thank Paul, it looks like you have a different ring on yours, rather than just a flat ring it's more of a cup, which you'd use if the spring diameter is larger.

Here is a picture from the Bilstein catalogue which isn't clear but it does seem to show 1 ring?

on the next post I've put a shot for the rear shock which definitely shows 1 support ring.

I don't think it really matters, as long as I've marked on it where the correct height is, if it slips which I don't think it will it can easilty be reset.

I think you'll find 2 rings are for the front as these will need locking because they are moving with the steering.

Whereas the rears only need one as they shouldn't be twisting (you're in serious trouble if they are) and rely on the downward pressure of the spring to hold them in place.
 
Richard in case it's of any help, KW shocks have just one ring but it has a grub screw to tighten once adjustment is complete (see pic of mine below). Maybe the bilstein collar you have is the same?

Richard, with the B6's Chris Franklin recommended the H&R Greens (fast road with occasional track) and I haven't been looking back since. He lauded them for their progressive nature - the more you lean on them the stiffer they get, perfect combo for track use then..
 
I agree with Marcus the H&R Greens with B6's are a good combo.

I would buy them as a matching set if I was to do it again so that the B6's come with the valves adjusted correctly for the springs.

Chris at CofG is extremely knowlegable in all aspects of suspension and geometry set up. Just to clarify, Chris will base his recommendation on the type/model of car and driving style and what is expected from the driving experience. So while we pontificate what someone else may recommend, Chris will make many recommendations for many people. However, his recommendation will be based on individual specific requirements.

I don't beleive anyone other than Chris is in a position to say what he would recommend. [;)]
 
Indeed and obvious Paul, hence Chris's recommendation from my driving preference - that within the parentheses...[8|]
