Black 944 turbo wanted. Cash ready!

ORIGINAL: DivineE

I have a pocket full of dollers and its burning a hole fast!

I'm surprised you have that many dollars left Ben after paying the excess mileage fees on the Z4

I assume it has now gone! Are you still hacking around in your bargain Rover then? If so it's no wonder you are so desperate to get back in a 944T!

Cheers

Damn you've got a scarily good memory! Z4 is being sold privatly so no excess fees:) big depreciation though :(

I actually have a bit of an itch for a TVR at the moment now that I only need a weekend car and don't care if it breaks down every time I take it out.. I don't know I fancy the experience (and the sound) but in my experience I've not been impressed with the real world power they produce?! I could swear a nice 944T would dust one?! Surely if your going to put up with sweating in a canoe with appauling build quality and a crumple zone which ends at the boot you at least want it to be mind bogglingly quick?!

...Am temped though, Ohh the noise!

TVR power have a Taraka 500 Chim for sale at 9K - dynoed at 320 so should be quick enough....

I don't think a 944T would trouble you if you were in a 4.5 Cerbera, very expensive to run but make a fantastic noise.

As much as i love tvrs I wouldnt buy one, not since i went there for 'school experience' years ago and let me loose with a rivit gun fitting handbrakes, fuel tanks and alike. I liked the airpowered tools, but i hadnt used them before those few weeks[8|]

I wouldn't buy a TVR after seeing them up close at one of the dyno days (which you did also, didn't you, Ben?).

I consider them an poorly engineered con after seeing the detail that went into casting a lovely aluminium glove box hinge (i.e.a highly visible but utterly unimportant part) in a car that happened to be on a ramp so I could also see the mild steel 1" box section suspension arms gobbed together with uinimpressive looking welds and barely painted against corrosion (a more generally not visible but extremely important part).

The ones I have driven have been beyond disappointing in terms of power also.

Well just got back from looking at the car. Didn't buy it I'm afraid.

Following is purely my personal oppinion and not necessarily representative of the views anyone else might have but..

The car appeared to me to be a superbly put together car, made with the upmost love and affection by people who have really put somo time into thinking about it and have done everything they did to the highest standard of quality. The car drove beautifully with excellent throttle response, it had literally no lag anywhere and pulled smoothly and progressively at all times. It was extremely swift rather than blisteringly quick in a striaght line but my god did it handle!! Wow, never been in a car 944 or anything else that could achieve grip like that in the wet! We travelled extremely briskly with very little effort an no sign that we were approaching the limits of the car at a speed which would not have been achievable in my Z4M even driven with sweaty palms and constant corrections of opposite lock! Very very impressed by the handling, stood out more than anything else I think.

Unfortunately I think that all this work was done some time ago and it has had little maintenance since. It had the feel of a car that was worn and just starting to so signs of coming apart at the seems in all areas. It felt ery used and a lot older than my 3.2 I sold.

In summary then a beautiful car that would probably last a long time still but certainly a well used example and not something I would personally be willing to offer more than £6.5k for not that I made an offer because I didn't want to insult him.

Regards,

Ben

p.s. yes Fen I have had some problem making the evidence match when putting the paper figures and reports like "a 944T wouldn't see which way it went" against my experience of two 4.5 Cerbs which although undoubtedly fast cars, certainly seemed and felt like they made no more progression than say a chiped 250turbo running a bar of boost?! I'm confident that a well sorted turbo would have diminished them to a spec on the horizon?![&:] Confused?

Ben, did you go see the RPM car? Just interested to know the chassis set-up if you see it was so good. What did you have on your 3.2 for comparison? Thanks, great name!

Yep that was my review. I've been in and driven many 944's M030 and non (my 3.2 was not as I had run out of money by the time the engine was finished and had to sell it before I had a chance to do anything about it!) I've also been in a couple of track set up 944's most frequently an S2 that runs koni adjustables (I think) and a completely 968 set up in terms of camber mounts, anti roll bars etc but this had a very differnet feel to it?! I'd be interested to know which bit of the set up made the biggest difference? The weltmeister adjustable anti roll bars maybe?? But something anyway felt very different! It stayed very flat but didn't hop of slide at all. If anything I'd say it was the closest to the feeling you get in a 997TT that kind of solid, reliable trust that its just always going to stick! It felt firm and solid all the way. Like I said very impressed!

Does it run KW with Weltleister ARBs? If so I know exactly what it would drive like and I totally agree with your description.

Oh dear boys! I have disgraced ze German nation by puting a deposit down on (ze English spitfire) I've bought a TVR Cerbera 4.2.. I know I know, I've just upgraded my AA membership and cleared the garage floor but this particular car was built for a member of TVR staff, has had 2 very wealthy owners (judging by its history and condition) and is only 29,000miles old. It looks as good as the day it left the factory or probably better in fact and is a particularly nice example I just dont think I could have let go. Plus I'm not sure I could have lived my whole life without getting to the V8 itch that needed to be scratched!

Well anyho the deed is done, I'll make you all laugh from time to time by updating this thread everytime it breaks down and I'll be back to the world of 944's next time I promise!

Well at least you have another couple of cars in the stable that you can use when it's not a dry sunny TVR day

The fact that they spent a fortune maintaining it doesn't mean they either wanted to spend money, or had it to spend......[8|]

Enjoy it! [8D]

Hummm TVR? Now that is going to make the odds on the sweep stake far more difficult to calculate as we will have to factor in the amount of time the car will be off the road due to mechanical failure. [8|]

The down side on this one Ben is, when you reach into your bag of talent and find it less full than you thought, you may well die.

Watch out for 250 turbo's then Ben, you did say they would see off a Cerb, (not). When I got fed up looking for a 944T I considered various TVR's, even the TVR faithful were twitchy about the reliability and running costs of Cerberas. I don't know what you paid but £10-12k is usually where they start, not to far away from a certain mint red turbo.
