I've read the entire thread and it's a shame the sale/purchase went this way. The RS community is a very close-knit one, and deals are usually (or should I say unusually?) carried out with a huge amount of respect, trust and integrity from all parties.
When the vendor received a higher offer for the car did he contact Des to explain the situation and provide an opportunity to reconsider? Given that he had received a deposit from Des, and agreed a date for inspection/delivery IMO this is the first thing he should have done - simply from a moral/manners point of view. If he didn't inform the original purchaser of the changing situation, IMO this is where the vendor's integrity was lacking.
Des, was Thomas informed you had placed a deposit on the car? I've only met Thomas once so don't really know him well, but would he still have gone ahead and bought the car from under you when he knew you were ready to complete? I know he's first and foremost a businessman, but knowing that his actions could tarnish his reputation amongst a large community of his core customers?
