Boxster survey on RMSI

did anyone see the name and address witheld letter in this months GT and PP?
it was about the RMS issue suggesting that Porsche need to get their finger out before the integrity of the product and company is severely damaged; suggests that a lot of Boxster owners are seduced from BMW/Merc etc and with bad experiences such as RMS failure and with no consistent resolution process go back to the other marques (particularly as eg the new SLK looks strong on paper and first reviews seem positive - seems as Merc have done the same as BMW have done with the Z4/Z3 ie improved it significantly over the old car)
the "do something about the RMS" momentum is growing!

Nic,

I believe so. My 996 had a new RMS under warranty last year at 4,000 miles.

It is the main item that prospective buyers are told to look out for when buying a used 996.

I think this initiative would only be half complete if the 996 Register were not carrying out a similar survey.

Oliver,

I have forwarded your reply to Johnny, but I would suggest you also contact him. I copied him on my original emails but didnt hear anything back - maybe his email is down?

ORIGINAL: NicD

RMS on 996 did not seem to justify a survey. Is it widespread?

Nic

As they share the same engine (suitably modified) the same fault exists.

If the meeting / exchange of letters does get off the ground with Porsche it would also be nice to know what changes there are within the crankcase / RMS issue on the new 997 model.

Survey received today and returned - thanks to everyone involved for getting it together.

in this months GT and PP (again) there is a tale of woe from a disgruntled Kiwi who has had 3 RMS replacements in 2 years[:(] for his 2002 996 C4

Thanks Andrew for the info.

On first read I too am not overly sure about the merits of the letter - what I would call engine failure are few and far between at the moment.

RMS however is a prevalent issue within the M96 engine (currently fitted to the Boxster & 996) but is more of a nuisance value brought about by poor engineering standards rather than a proper engine failure.

MY02 Boxster S Mileage 14000

I know this is slightly off topic; but I've just discovered that what I thought was a recurrence of the RMS problem is actually a leaking O/S Cam Cover.
The RMS was replaced under warranty before I knew I had a problem at the 12000mile (2-year) service.
After some persuasion my OPC is asking Porsche GB to make a "goodwill" gesture. After all the car has done 14000miles!
Is this leak a common problem?
As an engineer I bought my first Porsche on the basis of engineering and design excellence...I'm now beginning to seriously question my decision. It isn't so much the sloppy manufacturing but the downright arrogant way that Porsche conducts its business! They seem to forget that as customers we have options.

I do love driving my Boxster though!

I think you've articulated the 2 issues which appear rather frequently namely
quality of product (in respect especially of RMS)
quality of service (often extremely variable)
Andrew

Thanks Andrew,

I see that we're near neighbours and probably use the same OPC......L....s..r??

The RMS on my '01 S has started leaking again (OPC Reading noticed at its last service). It was changed once under warranty about 14 months ago, but now needs doing again - and of course warrranty is now expired. Porsche have offered that they will pay for all parts and half of the labour - has anyone had similar experience and got more out of them for an RMS fix out of warranty?

You could try quoting the sales of goods act to them - might get you further - see the other thread in general discussion.
