Bright Pink PS Fluid/Engine Mount Puzzle/Timing Belt - can it jump?

From doing a bit of research it would suggest the genuine ones are made by a company called Corteco

i have not found anywhere to buy them and they are not in the current list from them

I changed mine last year as I had a set of very low mileage genuine ones, but my old ones were still in spec even after 140k, and they got another Meyle customer out of the mire, the removed Meyle had done less than 10k in 4 years and one or two track days, the drivers side had completely collapsed

I personally don't think there is a real after market replacement

Euro list their dearer option as a hydro bearing. Would be keen to find out if anyone has any experience of them as you can get 2 for less than the price of 1 from OPC.

59 quid each, doesn't list a manufacturer though.

Stuart

I went through the same search and in the end realised that anything other than OPC was a gamble

paid £243 + vat for the pair but I know it's done right[:)]

So it was the engine mounts. Checked my records and the mounts were changed 3 years/16k miles ago. They had dropped about 3mm and we're causing on and off vibration issues. On removing them they turned out to be meyle, and I assume solid rubber. So the new parts my garage buddy got from Euro turned our to be very same meyle mounts with very same part number on! We chucked them on anyway to see if they were the issue and all vibration issues have been cured.

So these mounts are most probably solid rubber and will most probably last about 3 years, unless I just got a duffer last time, but I have found out that the mounts were defo the issue which I would have been annoyed about if I had forked out for genuine ones and it wasn't! So the coincidence has just been a coincidence and once these mounts chuck it I will replace with genuine items. So I have made progress.....I think!!

Cheers

I cut open one of the mounts today. And they are hydraulic. There is actually oil all over my mates garage wall after the mount exploded in the vice! I'm sure he will recover soon. Anyway, this is Meyle 414 375 0001 . Supplied by ECP for about 59 quid, and they ARE hydraulic despite all the stuff I have heard about them being solid mounts, they most definitely are not solid mounts. ECP lists correctly as a hydro bearing.

However, in saying this, why have my mounts only lasted 3 years/16k miles despite being hydraulic? Why did they seem ok before my indy done the belts but were knackered on getting the vehicle back. Has he damaged them somehow? How, I'm not entirely sure. Still so many unanswered questions.

So I think I need to see how long these hydraulic Meyle mounts last. If it is only another 3 years then the mounts are not very good. If they last for ages then my indy done something to knacker my old ones. Or I simply had a duff mount.

For future reference the actual OEM hydraulic mounts are supplied by either REIN or CORTECO and these are definitely hydraulic. However Meyle 414 375 0001 is also hydraulic but from my perspective the jury is still out (and will be for at least 3 years!) on their effectiveness. Interestingly there are people out here who speak highly of the Meyle mounts, others who don't, and others who think they are either hollow or solid rubber.

Also the internet is full of utter nonsense!

you had noticed then,,,,

nothing in the REIN automotive catalouge

[link=http://www.reinautomotive.com/pressreleases/ReinCatalog2015.pdf]http://www.reinautomotive.com/pressreleases/ReinCatalog2015.pdf[/link]

plenty for the cars with the engine in the wrong end

nothing in the Corteco Cat either

[link=http://www.corteco.com/en/products/online-katalog/] [/link]

cheaper than ECP

They both looked similar and did not look flattened or knackered. However there was a 3/4mm drop with them installed. The engine is back where it should be with the new mounts.

Heat shield is present.

Yeah £36 quid each delivered is a good price as long as they are not counterfeit!! I needed them urgently and ECP had them same day off the shelf. And they will be genuine Meyle for sure.

So this morning my vibration is back. This has irked me greatly. Is it possible for the balance belt to jump teeth? I say this as this morning the car was vibration free, and had been since mounts done, then on heading out my street I heard a slight clunk and the vibration re-appeared. How on earth can the vibration come and go other than teeth on the balance belt jumping, given that we can rule out the mounts and all this started happened when my indy done the belts? I have been in to Porsche this morning and their 944 guy is going to call me later. Other than that I will need to go to another indy to have the belts checked again. Can think of RPM in Glasgow or Motortune in Shotts. Either way I need someone clued up to look at my belts.

In other news my J-Boot has split also so will be fitting a new one later today, the reason I was down at Porsche to collect.

Stuart

just out of interest, what belts did they use

i have read stories of conti belts slipping.....

this maybe because the profile of the teeth is different to the gates belts

I think the timing belt was genuine Porsche and the balance belt was a Conti. At least that's what I was told. I recall being given an option for the balance belt and the Conti was cheaper, so having had Conti before with no issues I chose that option.

Stuart

So this morning we are 100% vibration free again! I am waiting for Jeremy Beadle to jump out! I do have one more theory. Possibly my power steering pump bearings are not to happy. It does seem to run slightly off true and previously I had this belt, and the alternator belt, a tad looser than spec. Currently both aux belts are ripped up full beans. So tonight I shall back off both aux belts a touch, strip of the covers and check the balance belt for my own sanity, and fit my new j boot.

Wish me luck

Stuart

the PS pump has a bronze bearing in the nose of the pump and that's all, i would think if that was toast then the pump would leak badly,

I have a spare if you want it to try out at some point.... it has got a new set of seals in it

Thanks Waylander. It does not leak. My alternator, despite fitting one with new bearings, still seems to squeak when cold. I'm probably clutching at straws but less and less is making any sense. Let's see how tonight's work goes and see if we can stay vibration free for a while............

Stuart

Take both auxilliary drive belts off and see if it still vibrates. Then try the PAS pump and the alternator re-connected in turn to see if you can pinpoint the cause.

You mentioned previously that the adjuster sleeve was missing from the PAS pump. That would probably mean it was misaligned for some time and could have coconutted the bearing.

Well got the belt covers fully off tonight. Had had the top cover off earlier in the week and the top balance shaft was half a tooth or so out. I didn't think that was an issue. However upon getting the lower cover off the bottom balance shaft was a full 2 teeth out! How angry did that make me after my indy allegedly rechecked it all and said it was fine. The balance belt is now in phase and there is no vibration. Still can't work out why the vibration was intermittent. Can anybody shed light on that?

PS pump seems fine. Alternator still squeaking a bit at start up but may be the belt. I'll get another belt on it soon and see if that cures it.

So what do to with my indy? Thankfully I have the weekend to calm down before I speak to him. Just shy of £1k for a cam box gasket and belts, rollers and sundries. And not done right and gave him 2 chances to sort it and now he is just palming me off.

Suggestions?

Cheers

Stuart
