Bright Pink PS Fluid/Engine Mount Puzzle/Timing Belt - can it jump?

Did you get pictures beforehand Stu? Would be good for you to have some evidence. I am sure there will be a consumer rights expert along soon to advise you properly but I for one would be seeking some sort of partial refund.

I never took pictures. But then again I could easily fake a picture if I wanted to. I have a mechanic willing to speak up if need be. Yes some sort of refund would be appropriate I think. Not to mention the engine mounts I had done that I didn't need which was another 400 Inc labour. I think I should see how he plays it and if he is not forthcoming I shall ask for a 50% refund and then throw in that my wife is a lawyer, which she is. And this is before I name and shame him. Which I don't think is appropriate. We all make mistakes but the "I've checked it and it's fine" is out of order. I would suggest refunding the labour would be fair. Happy to pay for the parts that were used.

Stuart

Refund of labour would seem fair to me. You cannot argue away the material that was used, but I would consider that a fair compromise with my customer had the same situation come about and it does believe me.

Replacing the belts on a 944 is a piece of p1$$ compared with a lot of modern cars, so they really have no excuse. If you paid by credit card you may be able to get a refund from the card company if they won't play ball.

Funnily enough a well regarded 'specialist' had a similar experience on my 951. Poor previous owner got charged for the belts to be fitted, then charged further labour when it was vibrating, and they found they had set one of the shafts 180' out of phase.

Sure - admit your mistake and put it right, but to charge extra to put a mistake right is a joke imo!

Still, glad you got your vibrations sorted - hopefully you will come to a fair deal with your indy :)

I would have a chance if he ever returned my calls. 3 times on 3 separate days I have been promised a call back which has never happened. I wonder if he reads this forum! It's getting to the stage I'm going to contact the credit card people and get my money back and they can chase him for the full amount. I get the impression I am being body swerved! Maybe I'm just paranoid and he's been too busy for over a week to do me the courtesy of picking up the phone and talking to me. I should probably go in in person for a chat as my next move.

face to face chats tend to get heated when largish sums are involved, I would send him a carefully worded letter first

Indeed. A letter or email also puts it in writing: essential for tracking who said what, and when. Good luck, they really should make an offer in a case like this!

On a side note - interesting that you have found that the ECP 944 Meyle mounts are indeed hydraulic.

Over the years many people, specialists, etc had said that the only hydraulic mounts were OE - and that Meyle's description of it being a 'hydro bearing' was false.

So now it seems that at least they are the correct type of mount, just questionable longevity.

I fitted a pair to my 944S, and the quality of mount seemed OK, but I sold the car a short while after, so no clue on their life.

Funnily enough, I am 90% sure I have at least one failure on my 951, both of which have been replaced within the last 10k miles, one by Hartech and one by RGA. Although, it was found that one of these mounts had the longer bolts fitted rather than the short ones, so this could be why one of them has failed prematurely - that and the missing heat shield!

I get some vibration when the weather gets cold, and I'm pretty sure this is due to a worn mount, just need to get underneath and have a measure up really.

I fitted the Meyle mounts earlier this year after a chat with Max at Frazerpart.

He he had them listed as a solid mount and I asked him whether he could confirm that they were solid as I'd seen them listed on ECP's website as a hydro bearing. Max contacted Meyle technical department and forwarded me the email where they confirmed that they were definitely hydro bearings (as Stuart's mechanic discovered). This made Max happy as he could update his website and presumably sell more mounts!

I ordered new shorter bolts as the original bolts were far too long and would definitely knacker the mount.
