buying a 944 part 2

I've a mate with a Corvette, he has one of those aluminium litter picker claws in the passenger footwell for pressing the button and getting the ticket from parking barriers.

Lol sounds like a good idea. Going to c the car Sunday midday if anyone is interested in coming along.

Where are you based? I may be in London on Sunday but I will not be able to say closer to the time.

i don't have a garage :)
The 944 is not a good car to leave out in the rain (although many do of course).
The 944 is the only tin-roof car I have ever had where the rain, instead of just running off it, is carefully channelled by the designers through special self-blocking pipes and holes.
I have never had to clean out any water egress pipes and channels before, but the 944 has 10 of them:
Four in the sunroof channel, two in the front wings by the scuttle, two in the rear spoiler and two pipes under the rear hatch catches.
The scuttle ones carefully channel all the water that runs off the windscreen inside the front wings so they can rust in peace and quiet behind the wheel arch liners.
The rear hatch catch seals are designed to fill the rear lights with water
The rear spoiler is really a part-time bird-bath.
The sunroof ones are designed such that when you push a wire or similar into the orifice, the rubber pipes come off the underside of the drain pipes just before the blockage clears.
Must have all been designed by the same bloke who specified papier-mâché gears to open the sunroof. Or the fellow who decided that the sills should be ventilated (what do you mean "the damp comes in as well as going out"??)

So does anyone have an opinion about not having a garage? Is it really that bad? Maybe then it's better to have a 944 with non original sills. Just replace them with galvanised ones. I don't want the car to rust in one season. That would be awful

sorry, perhaps I was being a bit too negative above - it's the quirks that make the 944 so fascinating (as well as the looks, sounds, performance, and handling of course).
Obviously the ideal life for a 944 is to be kept in a well-ventilated garage and used regularly on clean dry roads.
But back here in the real world.....

Ok that's better :) I might just buy a nice cover to protect it. Where I come from it's always the sun and salt air that causes the problems. Here it's the rain. All good

Yes ,Mike you were being a little negative--my red 924S trackday car stays out in all weathers--the grey one used to stay out for 10yrs or so when our 964 had to go in the garage.

Neither car has got sopping wet--a little simple regular maintenance of the problem areasnamely:-

a)hatch drainage holes in the spoiler-poke through both directions with a lollypop stick & flush with a hose jet--each time you wash the car
b)hatch locking receptors-use a short length of plastic covered net curtain wire to clear the plastic hoses-either direction & water flush
c)sunroof drain hoses-as b) but always from the drainhose open end-even a footpump will do it again from the open end -just make up a length of suitable plastic pipe to connect with.
d) Underbonnet -just keep them clear-leaves tend to block these especially small ones from Cotoneasters et alia.

As always just take things softly & carefully-if a lot of resistance is felt use a thinner but rigid style strimmer cord twisting as you go.
I have covers but as the car is used on the road day to day(my wife can't sometimes be bothered to get hers from the garage & it may need fuel!)she uses mine.

For longer layups,I also have a Carband which wraps around the bottom of the car & holds the cover in place against the wind gusts

Frankly ,I'd rather a car was drying off in the wind & air outside than being wet in a garage.

If you're in Camden without a garage, you may be in for a shock on how much insurance will cost you.

I've owned 3 944's all out in the open although did have a car cover I used at times. As long as it doesn't leak (which they can do!) then don't see any issue if you don't have a garage.
