Cayman Register Members on this Forum?

Jeff Thanks for the opportunity to register my Cayman with you. I have sent the form to PCGB. I am the very happy owner of 2011 Cayman S Black Edition - Manual - Sport Chrono. I have been driving this for 3 months now picking it up in January. It was a bit of a leap of faith going Cayman having had 2 X 993 and most recently a 997.2. But this is a blast. It's light, lithe and great fun. Not too ostentatious and gives me no anxiety leaving it in the city centre. I spent lots of time hunting for the right car; and it came down to a direct choice between an R and a Black Edition.To my eye, and for what I want to use it for the Black Edition wins out but I've no doubt there are many R owners who will be delighted to correct me. The car I went for has great provenance - featured in 911 & Porsche World - an article I was given by the specialist after agreeing to buy it! So not my pictures but one from the article is attached. I will be taking it to Knockhill & Blyton in May - and probably Oulton Park in the Autumn - so looking forward to being lapped by some of you longstanding members! Jon

Hi Jon, Welcome to Porsche ownership and to the Register. I presume that you're a Club Member but note that you're registered as a Guest, so you need contact one of the forum administrators to get it changed. Try Paul Grainger - click on "Members" at the top of the forum page and search for his details. I've put you on the Register list but you'll need to let me know your Club Region. I think that it's R7 [Yorkshire] but can you confirm? Good to hear that you're enjoying a really great driver's car and that you're planning to give it some stick at the coming Blyton track day. Jeff Thanks for the reply. You are correct I am Yorkshire [R7]. The members search for Grainger only produces Dick - so I'll stay labelled as a guest, unless there's another way to change my status. On another less happy note - my post clearly tempted fate. Took the Cayman out for a run in the sun today, and to get an updated photo for the avatar - and had to limp home in second gear. Shifter cable snapped dropping down to make an overtake. I gather this is a not uncommon problem, I would be interested to hear others experience. Happily it will be fixed, hopefully without question, under the used car warranty from the specialist dealer. Jon
 
Jon, You need to type in Paul Grainger; not just his surname. Yes, unfortunately snapped gear shift cables aren't unknown; a bit of a weak point I think. Hope you get it fixed quickly and are back on the road soon. Jeff
 
Hi Jeff, I'm the proud new owner of a black Cayman S 3.4, I'm in John's area R24 , and have been to the last 2 of 3 meetings , missed yesterday . Absolutely loving the car , best decision I've ever made [:)] Maybe see you in a month or two. best regards Richard
 
A great choice of car Richard. There was a good turnout for the R24 Wednesday meeting, with plenty of cars on show in the sunny weather, and I look forward to meeting up with you in the coming months. If you're actually a Club member you need to contact one of the Forum administrators to update your status from Guest to Member and contact Kevan [Buddy] to get yourself on the Cayman Register too. Not sure if this thread is still going but FWIW : Just joined up this month R2, would travel to R1 Ad hoc attendance at meetings/events subject to location as am based in Inverness

Jeff, from a recent register count up of 368 some of who have two entries but also two cars it looks like we have about 46% or more likely 50% and we do have a few who don't supply an email address. We are still a small register and spread across the UK thinner in some parts than others but even if members think they fit into one location because of the county they live in they are not tied to that one location anyone can go to any regional meeting and I have friends who do go to two different regions regularly if anyone wishes to go to another meeting it is fine, I am generally at the R8 Meeting but will probably be visiting others this year as I spend some of my time in other areas.

Hi all,

Just joined PCGB and a very happy, week old, Cayman owner. It's the first used car I've owned in over a decade but it feels much better and more fun than the last few Audis, if not as quick.

it was a slight surprise purchase as I only went to see what the car was like, then learnt that it was a one owner car with full OPC history including MOTs and decided to go for it.

The car is a 2.7 2008 Guards Red with 26k miles and just two options; rear parking sensors and CD changer. I'd love to upgrade the stereo but Cambridge OPC said that wasn't possible if I wish to apply for the warranty.

Would greatly appreciate any advice from other pre-2009 owners as to the IMS concern, which is to be honest my only reason for considering the OPC warranty.

Thinking about coming to Althorpe although will have to pay on the day as I just missed the advance tickets.

Jeff, does that put me in your area?

Welcome to Cayman ownership and pleased to hear that you're enjoying your new car - a different experience compared with the Audis no doubt.

Good to have you in the PCGB and posting on this part of the forum and look forward to hearing from you on here in the future. I don't know where you're located but I normally get along to R24 [Beds & Cambs] meetings, of which there's one this coming Wednesday, as well as some R10 [MK & Northants] Saturday meetings. I'll be at Althorp on the Sunday where my car will be on the Cayman Register display, so if you're attending, come over for a chat.

There's been so much written about IMS issues and bore scoring, etc. that if you believed it all, you'd never buy any of the Gen1-engined Porsches. All I can say is that although the internet is a great place for disseminating information, in this case it tends to be very one-sided and, inevitably, somewhat negative. While undoubtedly there have been quite a number of catastrophic and expensive failures, you've purchased the car and I think you have to take a positive view otherwise you'll be scared to drive the car as it should be driven.

A number of upgrades were introduced during the lifetime of the Gen1 engine, and Caymans benefited from these upgrades. I would think that your clutch is OK at 26k miles, but if you were thinking of having the IMS bearing checked during a clutch replacement, there are also a number of after market-upgrades available [ [link=http://www.thepopularmechanic.com/PorscheIMSOptions.html]http://www.thepopularmechanic.com/PorscheIMSOptions.html[/link] ] as well as the IMS Guardian [ [link=http://theimsguardian.com/]http://theimsguardian.com/[/link] ], though not everyone seems to think that the ceramic bearing option is the way to go. Although expensive, the Porsche Extended Warranty scheme is available for your 2008 car but it'll need to pass the 111-point check first, for which there's a [£210?] fee plus any work which needs to be performed resulting from the check.

Finally, be sure to get yourself on the Cayman Register by contacting Kevan Sutherns [ Buddy ] the Register Secretary.

Hi Justin, a good choice for your first Porsche, we did a trip to Stuttgart a couple of years ago and the two 2.7's while slower on acceleration were never more than a few minutes behind the 3.4's when covering distance. As for the IMS issue like many things it is exaggerated particularly on the internet one incident gets a lot of reports and not all cars suffer from it but it's as well to be covered, I just sold my Gen1 3.4 with 88,000mls and not had a problem, your stereo will be the CDR24 and is pretty basic but as you say to take on the Porsche Warranty it's a case of not changing anything which Porsche don't approve of.

There are alternative warranties but I can't speak for them as I have only used the Porsche Warranty which has given good cover and a good service in supplying a replacement vehicle when needed.

One other thing to add on the warranty front, if you take a two year Porsche warranty you only pay the 111 point check charge once rather than each year an economy if you keep it two years and transferable if you don't.

Apologies for mentioning the dreaded IMS issue without saying more. I researched endlessly online and came to the conclusion that once again this is an issue of the bad news getting more coverage than the good. Initially I thought a Gen.2 was the best bet but then read more about the constant upgrades throughout the life of Gen.1 cars and M97.20 being a vast improvement on the early M96 engines, added to the fact that the 2.7's seem to mentioned rarely in the scoring posts and thought I'd keep an open mind as to which to buy, based on budget and condition etc. I also felt fortunate that the dealer I bought the car from agreed to pay for a major service at Cambridge OPC and I went along to them to chat about the car and get some direct advice. The very helpful chap in service mentioned that most of the IMS issues they've seen have come from low gear pulling away (obviously post bearing wear) and that vibration being the thing that causes the shaft to move and fail. In his experience it wasn't something caused by revving the car properly. So that's given me carte blanche to enjoy the power band as often as possible. All in all I feel satisfied that I've made a solid and informed choice.

The one concern I do have is that I bought this car to learn more (hence giving up Quattro) and improve as a driver but I already can't bare the idea of spilling kitty litter all over the side of my lovely Porsche on a track. Silly as that made sound to some.

I'll certainly come along to a Cambs-Beds meet soon, although I'm enjoying some spirited driving in the Highlands at the mo so will have to pass on this week.

Not sure if I'm on the register or not. I bought my silver 2010 Cayman S in February 2014 - my very first Porsche, having drooled over them for 40 years! It is a plain vanilla car with manual gearbox and few extras, but I'm very happy with it. I've done a few track days at Goodwood and Castle Combe; enough to demonstrate that the car's abilities exceed mine by some margin, but I've had fun, which is the main thing.

I'm in R23 (Sussex) and have been to a number of their gatherings, though I'm not a regular at their club nights.

Don't worry, it took me years to get my first Porsche too. Just enjoy it while you can.

A note on the bore scoring issue that was mentioned in a post a short time ago, Barry Hart of Hartech wrote quite a lot on this subject in the forum for the 996 or 997 register a few years ago and he said that much of it was caused by people putting the engine under heavy load at low revs and to blip the throttle to boost the oil pressure when pulling away from standstill, another cause is hot spots in the cooling water flow, the thing is that as the engine at low revs develops low oil pressure and so no spray from the bore oil jets which operate from 1.8bar. My take on this is to never put the engine under load below 2,000rpm as we don't have a pressure gauge, the fact that due to the excellent engine management which will pull from 1,000 feels like there is no problem the lowered oil pressure at low revs is likely to cause problems. So keep the revs up above 2,000 and much higher at regular intervals piston slap is generated at low revs not high and so bore wear is worse at low revs so drive them as they should be and don't labour them. The manual can just about hold 50MPH in top gear but if the speed drops change down better to use some more fuel than rebuild the engine. The Gen1 which I recently sold has been driven by me as above for 86,000 of it's 88,500 and still ran as it always had with few problems none of which were engine nor transmission apart from coil packs and gear cables the two most common faults and they were at 80,000 miles within three weeks of each other so enjoy the cars that you have bought and I hope to meet many of you over then next few years.
