Cayman Register Stuttgart Museum Trip July 2013

This thread is to gauge the numbers who would like to take a drive to Stuttgart next summer and visit the Porsche museum, maybe doing an additional factory visit if possible. Since the 981 Boxster is being produced in Osnabruck and by then the Cayman may be too that may be a place of interest.

What I would propose is to meet at the eurotunnel or Dover Ferry terminal early Thursday morning and when in France drive through Belgium into Germany and either Osnabruck or Stuttgart to stop over and hopefully do a factory visit, stop over in or near to Stuttgart and then do the Museum visit on the Saturday drive part way back in the afternoon unless some wish to visit the Mercedes Museum.

Drive home on the Sunday. Of course it may be desirable to set off on the Wednesday but some may be limited for time off their work.

For me the distance to Stuttgart is around 550mls and being central in England pretty well average. Ok 220mls to Dover so it gives you an idea of the distances expecting to be covered per day.

Please give your responses I envisage a group of 6 - 10 cars.

Please remember that the factories close during the summer and tours are Monday-Thursday only. Tours are currently limited to the Zuffenhausen and Leipzig factories.

Kevan, I would be interested in joining the Cayman group depending on dates, not July/ August. Might I suggest a stop over in Belgium, Ardennes area as the drive from Dunkirk / Calais is about 4 hrs whereas to Stuttgart would be more like 8 hrs+, too much in one day unless you get a very early ferry crossing. I made a stop over in Spa, only down side was the hotel dinner was very expensive even off race season. The hotel in Stuttgart used for the official Factory Visit is to be recommended and is close to the site. Chris

Kevan, Wish I could say that I'd be able to join you and other Caman-ites but I'm hoping to do the Club's Factory Visit next year (in September?), so 2 visits in as many months would probably be overdoing it. I'll let you know if my plans change. Hope that you get a good response. Jeff

Thanks for the heads up Nick, I didn't know about the factory shut down and wanted to give space between Le Mans and the Museum visit so if July it would be a Museum visit only. Chris, my reason for July is to hopefully avoid the Le Mans exodus, an alternative may well be September to be off peak for hotels, ferries etc, still a good time of year to go and maybe factory visits will be available, I'll enquire. As for distance, some will only be able to take a long weekend maybe Friday to Tuesday to fit in a factory visit but I do know that english speaking visits are not available every day. In fact I thought it was Friday but Nick has corrected me. Anyway, this is to gauge what the register members want and what will suit them, some are retired and want to take time out at regular intervals while some need to do things in a shorter time and so have to drive further in a day. Maybe it will be necessary for two groups setting off say, a day or two apart. Lets see what responses reveal, time of year, duration, route etc.

Just a thought Kevan but you could try contacting Richard Watling who organises the Club Factory Visits. I'm sure that he'll be able to answers these questions and would probably be able to recommend routes, hotels, etc. Jeff

Thanks Jeff, I knew someone does it but didn't know who so having already put a note on the RS/RO section, I've now emailed Richard for further advise.[;)]

Kevan, Richard is indeed the expert in the club on FV's (as his title would suggest) and having been on the April 2011 visit I can highly recommend them. Not wishing to steel his thunder but they are held in April and Sept and this year the April visit is intending to take in both sites rather than Stuttgart only, as he recently posted. He told me there is no firm info on the next visit until January, as is the norm. It might be an idea to ask him if a Cayman group could join the next factory visit. I am already on his list. Chris

Chris, I've not received anything yet. Suggest that you use the E-mail rather than PM which I believe can be unreliable. Jeff

Hi I maybe up for this trip if you can keep me posted at my home E-mail account of smart707@hotmail.co.uk as I have always liked to attend the Museum but it depends on the cost as in 2013 its also the Frankfurt Motor Show in August or September as Porsche maybe launching the New Porsche Macan & I hope to attend this show in 2013 as the Frankfurt show only comes around ever 2 years. Yours sincerely Kevin.

Kevin, at this point I'll leave it until January, I have been in touch with Richard regarding factory visits and if we go apart from with the main club trip actually visiting the factory may not be possible, however, the museum and the drive would be and we don't need a large convoy to do a long weekend trip. As I've said before not everyone has unlimited time to do these trips some of us have family holidays to sort out too. We'll see in the new year. If I don't do this trip then maybe Le Mans camping.

Hi, This is my first visit to this forum (or any other in fact). I went to the Museum in October on my way back from the Alps in my Cayman. I left Stuttgart at 11am and drove back through Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium and a bit of France and was home (in Kent, not far from Brands Hatch) by 9:30pm. Longer than driving through France (595 miles door to door) but no toll roads..!! I stayed at the Golden Leaf Hotel, Stuttgart, Zuffenhausen which has underground parking, was cheap and is a 10 minute walk to the museum. Don't forget the museum is closed on Mondays... Cheers, John.

Hi John, welcome to the forum, before I took the job of register secretary I was planning a trip of my own to Stuttgart, Gmund in Karnten and Mulhouse maybe taking in some of the Italian Lakes ( not literally ) but as some can spend the time and others can't reduced it to the there and back long weekend idea, it may even change into a dash out to Stuttgart then diverge to each taking their own route back but we would have the fun element of a group drive and museum visit, stop over and eat out somewhere around Stuttgart then whatever from there. The plan was to for the dash out to meet up in Kent either Thursday or early friday morning and drive straight to Stuttgart, some may prefer to stop over on route, it's not easy to suit everyone and so it is down to preferences and numbers, some may wish to drive to Belgium on the Thursday which in many ways would be good for those from the midlands and north but we would all meet up in Stuttgart on the Friday evening. Museum Saturday and so on. Nothing will suit everybody but without responses I won't know and thanks for the note on the hotel, I think it is the one the club trips may use, secure parking is a priority for us after all.
