'Chattering' on S2

The Blue One has recently started to make a 'chattering' noise emanating from around the rocker cover. Quite a metallic rattle really. Belts were done about 10k ago, although not sure whether the chain or tensioner were attended. The noise seems to be from the top though, and not the front. Any common issues which I should know about?

Chain tensioner. Slipper pad could have disintegrated and you're hearing chain lash. Fix it immediately if it's that case or it's going to get expensive.......

Slipper pad is easy DIY.

I don't have a S2 but from all I've read I would check the tensioner slipper , I believe this is not part of Porsche's service and can be very bad news for engine if it fails. As for the noise not coming from the front well sound has a funny way of confusing one.
Other possibilty is a stuck tappet that usually clears after a while, what plugs do you have? I had what I thought was a stuck tappet in the past only to discover a broken plug that proceeded to cause some damge to piston, head and bore although luckly nothing serious. Plugs I had then were NGK Iridium which some rolling roads won't map a car with them in due to this very problem.....that's iridium in general not just NGK.. BTW I still have iridium plugs in car....lol

It could be nothing, but as the guys have said it could be the first sign of something going awry with the camchain, the slipper pad or the tensioner so get the cam cover off ASAP and have a look. There is a guide here with some pictures too:

You'll need a new camcover gasket

I'd go with chain and slipper pads.

Seals are around £23 all in from OPC. You have the rocker cover gasket and the 4 doughnut rings that fit around the spark plug apertures.

Agree with all said here ... but you don't necessarily need a new camcover seal - the old one is rubber, and if fairly supple can be re-used quite happily.

(Awaits various people to quote the Porsche instruction set here, telling me I am wrong. I am only speaking from personal experience ... )

My guess is as has been stated, chain / slippers .
I wonder how many teeth are missing from your cams.??
My guess is about 4....?????

I reckon you are right. Looking at the pictures I guess it's going to be the tensioner assy. The rattle is around this area, and be echoing in the rocker cover.

I also reckon ALL teeth will be intact. I will also go as far as saying that it will be like new once the cover is removed, and nothing more wil be required....

Oh blast. Gosh and fiddlesticks. I have taken it to my local Porsche guy and he's had a look. Half the teeth missing on the exhaust cam.

It's on eBay and Pistonheads at the mo. Guess the value has decreased...

So there were MORE than 4 teeth missing.....
And they all be somewhere in the sump. which will need removing to get them out....££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££

Oh the joys of owning an older Porsche......

How about a little fishing with a telescopic magnet through the oil drain hole ?.

It's not that bad. I've looked at the engine and it's a matter of taking the cam belt sprocket off the end of the cam, remove the cam bolts and lift out the cam. Replacing is just the reverse procedure not forgetting to replace the gasket. 45 minutes...

The cam sprocket is half-way along the cam. The camshafts need replacing; you can't just replace the sprocket.

On the contrary, once this is done explain the work in the advert and put the price up. There are plenty of people out there who understand that it's worth paying a bit extra for a car that's had expensive work done recently, as with a clutch or a suspension overhaul, or a belts and waterpump service.

You probably won't get all the extra expense back, but a good chunk of it.

A telescopic magnet through the oil drain hole may just about work actually. As the oil drain hole goes in horizontally, and the sump is alloy, you may get lucky. Certainly worth a jolly good try. Good call pauly. (An aside: I assume that getting the sump off is a big job - involving lifting the engine or similar as there is something in the way of dropping it straight down?)

Nice bit of positive spin. Well put Paul. Clouds and silver linings and all that.
