You have to drop the cross member which means front suspension and engine being held by a lift to support it since the engine mounts are attached to said member. Not a quick job in any sense of the word...lol I did it on the drive but guess it will be a lot quicker if you can get it on a ramp

You have the cam chain + slippers replaced ever 60K miles....
If your red car has more than this now + hasnt had the cams inspected. I STRONGLY recomend you get them checked...
Porsche bNEVER had this as a service item....Obviously they thought it would never wear out.....[
Did you find out the reason for the failure? Was it the chain which failed and damaged the teeth or the plastic tensioner pad?
I replaced the pad as soon as I got the car (an easy job by the way and no need to change the rocker cover gasket on mine) but am wondering if I should have changed the chain at the same time now.

Wouldn't the teeth end up going into the oil filter and stay there, until the filter gets swapped?

Nah, there's a mesh screen on the bottom of the oil pickup. You can 99% leave them in the sump and they'll do no harm what so ever. I wouldn't be surprised if they come out when you drop the oil, maybe attached to the magnetic sump plug.
Much more dangerous than the teeth would be any little bits of swarf which the chain has removed from the cams/tensioner and even these would be picked up by the filter once they end up in the sump.

The cams had 10 teeth missing...[
Thankfully ALL 10 were found in the bottom of the sump...
And im glad i had the sump removed otherwise it wouldve constantly niggled me , just quite where they were + if they were going to cause more damage...
I still have the "old" cams, as a momento / reminder....

Car has started to have quite a bit of interest now - so hopefully a sale is pending...
My Red Car has 'masses' of paperwork which the seller is going to forward to me. Eventually. I am eagerly awaiting this as I will be specifically looking for documentation on the tensioner. At the moment I am driving it with extreme caution. Once bitten etc.
Save me trawling the forum for the issue and for clarification. Where's the best place/s to obtain the assembly? Cost and is it DIY? Whole assembly, or just the slipper pad? Every 60K I know!

The cam teeth can fail due to the chain stretching over time. The distance between links increases, therefore putting pressure on the sides of the teeth as the chain engages. Same thing actually happens to bicycle cassettes - chain stretch accelerates wear of the teeth - they don't usually break though, just wear down. The chain should be replaced at least every 50,000 miles, probably 30,000 would be a safer bet.

First time I read that I though you meant the bicycle chain LOL you must be very fit cycling 30,000 miles [

I don't think it has a split link, neither do I think it breaks. I think it's a cams-out job.

Just found this http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/porsche_944_engine_components.html which has the cam chain for £20. it seems like it's one piece so I guess that means cams out, which means cambelt off [
I changed the tensioner pad in mine when I got it but didn't look closely at the teeth. Might have to open it up again and inspect the cam teeth as I'm getting worried now!
It'd be good to have a good, close up photo of a new cam so we can compare to the original tooth profile and see how much wear there is.

Edit - in that last pic, one of the chain links (at the far left of the pic) is a different colour. Possibly a split link?
