cills or sills????

FWIW, before I looked it up I always thought it was sill and that is the usage I'd continue with even given the cill variant, which looks odd to me. Each to their own though.

Well, it's either this or staring out the window...
Actually, even with this, Boxa.net, Renntech, Porsche-1.net and a couple others plus some personal admin it's still mostly staring out the window...

So we are all agreed that we'll go with the OED which means that "sill" is primary, but "cill" is an acceptable variant? "Cill" just looks wrong to me, but I'm prepared to accept it isn't. I'm still keeping it as a pet hate (and it's childish to create a sentence like "I have lots of break dust on my cills" just to get on my thruppenies).

Fen I don't know why you sit on the fence, come down on one side or the other.
P.S as a son of a cockney I think you will find it is thre'penny bits in reference to the twelve sided coin worth 3d, not to get on yours again.

I thought that was quite diplomatic for me [:D]

OK, so the new topic is: thruppennies or thre'pennies [:D][:D]

Before decimalisation brought in a new penny and new, rather stiff pronunciations, the sum of three pence was usually pronounced either "thripp'nce", "thrupp'nce" or "threpp'nce", the distinction perhaps being geographical. Likewise, the coin was usually referred to in conversation as a "thripp'ny bit" (or a "thrupp'ny bit", etc.).

Unless there are any architects on the forum who know better! [:)][:)]

Personally I never recall seeing that much joinery or masonary on the side of a porsche!!!
Just looking through some plans I have recently commissioned the architect there has not used the word Cill or Sill
He has just pointed out "hard wood lower window finishers" maybe he had a problem with spelling too!!!
John, was that Longman book a Uk print??

Interesting question . Apparently I have a 1981 second impression Published in the UK by Longman Group Limited, of Burnt Mill, Harlow. It was typeset in Leicester by Woolaston Parker Ltd and printed in Singapore by Selector Printing. It is published in the US by Longman Inc. New York.

I don't necessarily see the US interest as in the preface Frank Hilton states:-

"....While primarily intended for students preparing for City and Guilds examinations leading to an Advanced Craft Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery, student preparing for Institute of Builders examinations and TEC.........should, it is hoped, find this work useful..."

The above qualifications are all English, dimensions are in mm, colour is spelt colour and there isn't a # to be seen. Timber is timber not lumber and all costing examples are £'s.

Well, you did ask. [;)]

....."hard wood lower window finishers" ......

You might also want to mention to him that timber from deciduous trees is hardwood, unless he just wants some wood which is hard. [:D]

Hey John,

I mentioned this to him today and he said he specifically said Hard wood due to the area of the develoment in South London. He felt that soft wood would not be able to deal with the hoodies and thugs in the area. He therefore specified he wanted the wood to be able to look after itself. The sort of Charles Bronson of woods if you get the drift [:D]
