FWIW, before I looked it up I always thought it was sill and that is the usage I'd continue with even given the cill variant, which looks odd to me. Each to their own though.

So we are all agreed that we'll go with the OED which means that "sill" is primary, but "cill" is an acceptable variant? "Cill" just looks wrong to me, but I'm prepared to accept it isn't. I'm still keeping it as a pet hate (and it's childish to create a sentence like "I have lots of break dust on my cills" just to get on my thruppenies).

P.S as a son of a cockney I think you will find it is thre'penny bits in reference to the twelve sided coin worth 3d, not to get on yours again.

He has just pointed out "hard wood lower window finishers" ......
John, was that Longman book a Uk print??

You might also want to mention to him that timber from deciduous trees is hardwood, unless he just wants some wood which is hard. []
