confession time .That means you !

Hello - I'm happy to say the list of jobs on my '91 S2 is pretty short but I do have an indicator switch that does not return (either side) and the horn pad seems to "float" over the lower left position. The horn works when the pad is depressed over the upper or lower centre section and IIRC - the right side of the pad. I haven't pulled anything apart yet for a look see. Fortunately I have no air bags in this car (came from Japan) so it has the regular four spoke steering wheel.

Can the indicator switch be repaired to restore the cancel function or is replacement the usual remedy?

Another question - repair shops here want to replace rotors and wear indicators along with pads regardless of condition. They claim there is too many problems with squeals, etc if the rotors are not replaced. No mention of machining rotors either - just replace them. Is this common practice in the UK?

The indicator cancel could be one of two things, the steering wheel should have a bit that sticks out of the back to flick a white cancel leaver in the indicator unit. So either the bit that sticks out is missing or the white leaver has snapped.
I bought a new indicator unit as the leaver on mine was broken, but oddly the old unit was screwed together and the new pop riveted, maybe someone had a go at repairing it before.

As to the horn, you will have to pull that off to sort the indicators, but sounds like a spring is missing.

No need to change disc (rotors) with pads unless they are worn past the limit. Wear indicators are hard to remove without snapping them, again only need to replace with dash light is on. Squeals on these cars are normally down to plate lift in the calliper.

I'd take the car to another repair shop if I were you. It sounds like that one is trying to rip you off. Porsche state the recommended wear for brake disks ( refer to your workshop manual.) Ask your repair shop what the current disks measure and which Porsche wear parameters they are referring to in determining that your current brake disks are no longer servicable.

Frequently brake pad manfacturers include new wear indicators although there are at least two different types of electrical connectors .

1. Heater core
2. Locks
3. Front Nose respray
4. Wing corrosion
5. Rear hatch struts (gone today)
6. Cill corrosion

Any more.....................

Thanks peanut and homesea. I'll take this on myself from now on as I'm pretty sure I can find a machine shop that can turn rotors if required (don't need a porsche specialist for that!). By the way - my new rear brakes squeal and make lots of dust anyway so I may as well have myself to blame [:D].

I'll have a look at the horn and indicator in the new year (car is stored for winter now - in Edmonton, Alberta Canada the snow stays till late March/April so I have plenty of time [:(])

I also want to say that I'm really impressed with this forum and its members. It is really encouraging to see the level of knowledge, enthusiam and commitment to the cars and the willingness to share information and experience. I'm also impressed with the scope of repairs and maintenance this group takes on - seems like nothing is beyond reach.

- Cure oil blockage
- Belts and water pump
- Oil cooler seals
- Put engine back in car
- New brakes
- New windscreen
- Sort out dodgy fibreglass front bumper
- Driver's seat belt
- New wipers
- New shocks front and back

In other words enough to keep me busy for a while longer. Still it's been off the road for 10 years, a little while longer won't hurt.

I can now add a new clutch to this list. Sadly I can't remove anything from it yet.

How did your clutch go just sitting there Rob ?![:D][:D][:D] or have you got another 944 we don't know about?

Good to hear you've taken control of the situation. Just cos your car is laid up for a few months doesn't mean you should stay away .[;)] Love to see some pictures of the snow , bears ,mountain cats, moose etc [:D][:D][:D][:D]

Ha, Ha! Awesome thread.

  • Very noisy gearbox to sort, very embarrasing
  • Radio aerial snapped (by scrotes)
  • Oil cooler seal change
  • Sort out smoking when i boot it
  • Sort leaky sunroof (3 summers so far)
  • Sort out screenwash switch (not working and bodged to remote switch by previous owner, been that way since i've had the car)
  • Find out why i've got full oil pressure all the time apart from when it's idling hot
  • Any key will currently open the drivers door!- change lock barrel

Hmm, might not work for me- When i set off it sounds like i'm in reverse, and when i back off the gas there's a series of clunks and clicks as everything shifts axis, it'd take all Mike's carpets and all the rugs in Turkey to silence the old girl! It keeps soldiering on though so i keep changing the oil every two summers. Forgot:

  • Get rip in drivers seat bottom sewn up (gets bigger every year and is now losing padding)
  • Find out why Porsche ever bothered to fit back seats to the 924.

Well I do have another 944 but that's not going anywhere either. The clutch needs doing as I pulled it out in preparation for putting the engine on a stand and it's pretty worn plus I want to upgrade it to remove the rubber donut so fingers crossed I never have to do it again! The engine's going to be out for a while as I'm sorting out a load of 'while you're in there' jobs.

I'm a sucker for punishment [:D]

Sounds like your aunt is playing on your sympathies. While we see -40C for a couple of weeks in January its usually between -10C to -25C with a few runs up to near 0C from mid November to mid March then starts to warm up again. Humidity is typically low here so it doesn't feel as cold as it sounds. Summer is quite pleasant averaging low-mid 20s with a few runs up to the low 30s so the air conditioning does get used.

I'll wait till January for the snow shots - we get the most then - so you can have a chuckle at the large mounds on each side of my driveway[]. As for the others - well - Edmonton is a city so we don't have bears or mountain lions running around but we do get the odd moose or deer in the city. The city is bi-sected by a large river and we have a comprehensive park/green space system along it so wildlife wanders in from time to time. We do have coyotes and plenty of jack rabbits in our neighborhood though. Sorry - no pictures of the coyotes as they are hard to get close to and the two times I did find one in my yard, I was throwing things at it - not taking pictures. Coyotes prey on the wild rabbits and pets so its best not to encourage them to frequent your property.

Thanks for the encouragement although I really have few excuses - my garage is heated [:D]

Things I did this year

Prepared and stripped body for full glass out respray
Got it resprayed
Put everthing back together (much harder than taking it apart)
Fitted an uncracked dash and changed the entire interior from brown to black.
Overhauled front brakes
Replaced fuel filter and pipework
Repaired sunroof

Things left that I should have done by now

Cylinder head overhaul
Replace noisy exhaust
Fit clear wheel arch protectors
Fit the pesky trim pieces to the rear window rubber seals.
Replace rear brake discs
Drive it !

Probably my most impressive bodge job wasn't on my 944 but on my old Polo. The multi speed wiper switch stopped working and I couldn't find the problem, so I wired the motor direct to the battery and glued a normal domestic light switch to the dashboard to turn it on! (I did paint the light switch black, it's not like I've got no class [:)])

The chap who bought it in the end didn't turn a hair, and paid full asking price!

Edit - just read the first page of this topic (maybe best not to start at the end?!) and found it's about things that haven't been done at all! OK, the worst of those is passenger door lock that won't open on the key and rocker cover gasket. When the weather warms up... I'll put off doing them again!
