cylinder bore linings

considering the cylinder head hasn't been delivered yet I have no idea what else can go wrong but coming up to 3 weeks that car has been in the garage I'm getting very unhappy about the whole experience

No finger pointing here at all. This probably started as a failed head gasket and has been blown out of proportion. If a head gasket fails, often as a resut of not beeing able to resist giving it beans before the engine is thouroughly warmed up. If you dont warm the engine gradually (and I set a 3000rpm limt) a phenomenom called fretting ocurs (it always happens to a greater or lesser degree) because the cylinder head will want to warm up quiker than the block being smaller in physical mass (ie the total weight of the metal in the head) and being at the hot part of the engine it will expand more than the block. The gasket can tolerate a little bit of delta expansion but give it too much too soon and that 23 year old gasket is going to let go, Once that happens the head is going to be toast if you dont notice immediately and worse still if you refill the cooling system with cold water and the head is remotely hot it is likely to crack. Furthermore in these days of alu/plastic radiators that overpressurising of the system can blow the radiator apart too. Now one says no hole the other says hole, and thereby hangs a tail. Me I start a potential purchase up and let it idle a while and then get underneath and check for leaks after all caveat emptor and all that. Soli I am not calling you a liar nor am I giving the nod to Frenchy for that "acolade" but if the hole in the radiator was that severe would it not manifest itself during the "pdi"? One calls to mind the clarksonesque adventure with the £1500 928 which did about 7 gallons to the mile and needed Lake Michigan towed behind it to complete the journey to Brighton. I feel sorry for you I really do but is there not some room for rethinking the root cause of your disapointment?

Soli /All the replacement head was paid for on Saturday, the receipt for the head arrived here today which was made out on the 26/4 and it states delivery to the garage where the car is along with the postcode, i will send it you Soli to put in the history folder, the vendor who is a well known Porsche breaker was not working on Saturday but had told me it would be sent on Monday with delivery Tuesday but more likely Wednesday.
Soli if the head is not there yet call me and i will chase it up ?

There's an inbox? Well you live an learn. I though I was billy no mates not getting anything in outlook

Soli, hope your car is on its way to being fixed and enjoyed, however also feel that much of the damage could have been caused by driving it after the HG went. Currently changing the HG on my relatively young and low mileage cab - it was rotting out so feel a bit of your pain. Have known Jim for a long time and I firmly believe if he had any doubt about the state of the engine he would have sorted it before selling it so a very unlucky start to your ownership. Generally the mechanicals are cheaper and easier to resolve than the bodywork so even though your ownership is at a low now it will be on the up once sorted.
Wishing you all the best for speedy (and affordable) resolution.
Tony

I agree: you cant blame a vendor for not carrying out speculative preventative maintenance, and driving after the head gasket failure is far more likely to have caused the issue than it have been pre-existing.
