997 go to the Beaches......
of Normandy

Well I've finally got round to putting this together... The proposed date of this weekend trip is March Saturday 6th- Sunday 7th 2010
My idea is to be able to tour France in company and enjoy France without it becoming too much of a Dday expedition [;)]

The plan is to travel via the tunnel at £58 return for the crossing early on the Saturday morning and to meander down via some of the stunning French coastal and D roads to our lunch destination.
The drive is approx 190 miles(4 hours), so we will obviously be stopping for coffee enroute, this should put us in the stunning port of Honfleur for about midday and ready for lunch.
* should the weather be poor we will use some additional Autoroute to save time.

Following on from lunch we plan to keep to the D roads to our first stop at the famous Pegasus Bridge.
From the bridge and museum we head via the D roads and coastal roads passing the Gold and Juno beaches to our proposed chateau on the outskirts of Bayeux in plenty of time for people to relax and use the facilities or venture into the city for the museum, English cemetery or to visit the famous tapestry.
We have limited rooms reserved at the chateau.

We propose to use the restaurant in the chateau to enjoy the fine French cuisine but you are most welcome to make your own plans for dinner should you so wish. They have offered us a Half board package at 304 Euros

The Sunday will be a mid morning start reaching out to the West Peninsula towards Cherbourg where we start our main tour of the beaches and highlights of Normandy, we will head West to East starting at Sainte-mere-Englise and the American museum before our first beach of Utah and the other famous stops.
Mid afternoon will hopefully see us close to our starting point and the pretty town of Port en Bessin, where we will take lunch prior to leaving the area for a steady drive back via the Autoroute from Caen to Calais.

Other stops will include;
American Cemetery
German Cemetery
Point du hoc
Longues Battery
Arromanches (mulberry harbour)
Omoha Beach

www.chateau-de-sully.com Superior Double room €170 per room, breakfast would be €18 per person or Half-board Superior Double room at €304 "" includes dinner and Breakfast

www.eurotunnel.com £58 return leaving 06.50 on the 6th and returning on the 18.50 train on the 7th

Fully booked

Hi Gary

Dependent on timings I could possibly join you in Honfleur for lunch eta circa 1330 but to catch the return ferrry I would need to leave Port en Bessin at about 1415 the next day. You plan to arrive at Port en Bessin "mid afternoon" for lunch. Are the lunch times fairly static, I would hate to miss lunch on either day?

Please let me have more details when you have them.

I have visited most of the points on the trip but my girlfriend hasn't and it would be a chance to meet. You never know I might be able to get other members interested although we are an insular lot mostly because of the cost of getting off the Island. My ferry cost will be £200.00 and more if I want a guaranteed seat!

Cheers

PS am I emailing the right place?

I've replied to the email [:)]

Quite weired sorting this trip out and watching the snow fall at the moment!!

What is snow?

We are supposed to get some tomorrow and Thursday so the Island will grind to a standstill as usual !!

Wit my current "slicks" I might just take the bus (if it is going) or cadge a lift in my girlfriend's 4WD as I am not sure my 4WD and all the electronic toys will cope.

Cheers

Hi Gary

Happy New Year to you and everyone on the forum.

Rosemary was singularly unimpressed that there weren't any vineyards included in the itinerary! I did tell her it was Normandy not Bordeau..

She obviously got the wrong meaning of the "D" in "D-Day" [:D]

We're booked on the train and e-mail sent to hotel to book room.

Tell Rosemary to hold fire.... hopefully plenty of vineyards included in another trip later in the year.. [;)]

I did an almost identical tour with my son last summer.

With Gary's talent for seeking out the best roads and POI this promises to be a great trip. Here are a few pictures to whet your appetite.

Pegasus Bridge (this is the new one - the original is in a nearby museum)

Hi

I saw the original Pegasus Bridge a few years ago when it was in a field about a mile upstream (maybe downstream!) very impressive with lots of bullet holes! How far away is the museum because it must be worth a visit, perhaps it is signposted.

The area where the gliders landed is also amazing, as a private pilot I was amazed at how they got into such a small space and in the dark as well!

Cheers

The Pegasus bridge museum is well signposted and is just across the bridge from where the photograph was taken; behind the small trees on the left.

As you say the glider pilots did an amazing job, and with very limited navigational aids; just a compass and a watch I seem to remember.

Thanks, I seem to recall that there was a nice pub / restaurant that side immediately after the bridge and as we were not driving we spent a very pleasant couple of hours there sampling their local hooch between exploring the sites!

The history buffs will know the cafe was the first building to be liberated.
All the attractions there are walkable from one to another..

Thanks for posting the images Allan, I'll sort some others out later.
