Depreciation

ORIGINAL: Gary C
ORIGINAL: John Sims It is outrageous. My Porsche has depreciated over 40% in the time I have had it ........but then £3K over 7 years is hardly ruinous. You can't help but love 944s. [:D]
How awful, mine seems to have increased from 10k to about 14k(ish) over the last 2 years, You can't help but love 3.2's [:D]
How awful, mine seems to have remained fairly steady at quite a good figure. You can't help but love 993's. JohnC 993turboX50

Well guys, I think this is true for all Porsche owners, no matter what you drive! However, the most important thing that each of us is reaching nirvana by driving (and even just watching!!) our beauties!

I was faced with this dilemma over the past 2 weeks. Test drove a 2006 DB9 Volante with 5k on the clock (and it was awful, despite being beautiful to look at), looked at a 2009 V8 Vantage Roadster with 1k on the clock and also a brand new carrera 4 cabrio pdk in aqua with a very tempting 5k off (it now has 48 miles on the clock courtesy of me). Concluded that the Porsche was the better resolved and most solidly screwed together, and loved the familiarity and cosy dimensions of the familiar 911. Very tempted by the C4 deal, but aqua blue not my colour (despite it looking very nice) and I don't need 4wd or the lesser boot space as we take it away on hols. So, done a deal today for a C2S Cabrio in Carrara white, loads of goodies and built just the way i want it to be. Got a reasonable trade in deal on the '94 C2S that i was happy with plus some 'sweeteners'. Car is to be built in March (they managed a slot) and delivery in April. Do I care about depreciation? Not really - I know I will lose money, but that's not the point - I will get the car I really want, will have lots of fun with it over the next 5 years and am going into the deal with my eyes wide open. The point is, had I left that cash in an account, would I get any enjoyment out of it - of course not - so I'm looking forward to that sweet engine note, wind in the hair and a big grin on my face this spring, and recession be damned![:D]

Rob I totally agree with your outlook on life you are a long time dead and I have just reached the same conclusion (see object of desire) roll on Aprill and enjoy.

Well done fellas - totally agree with you. We have no kids and work hard - so who will benifit from all our hard earned when the grim reaper comes calling! Enjoy life now - your a long time dead and you can't take it with you!

One, if not the only, bits of decent advice my dad gave me was about making decisions in your life. His view was that you had to imagine looking back from a long time in the future and try to make decisions that you would not have any regrets about. So, on that basis, I thought that should I be lucky enough to live another 25 years, by then a) I probably won't be able to bend low enough to get in a 911 b) there probably won't be anything like that anymore anyway c) I will still have the same amount of dosh and d) if I don't buy that turbo now I will look back and regret it. So I have - [8D] I told my kids some time ago that I intended to enjoy as much of my hard earned as I possibly could so go and earn your own!

I do agree Peter, but one has to survive in comfort until the day the Grim Reeper calls. Moreover, there is a fine deviding line between buying new and suffering the buying addiction (wot I have [:D]). Interesting figures from my OPC dealer principle about depreciation re 997 C2S: 1st year: £25K (in fact 1st 6 months) 2nd year £5K - £6K 3rd year £5K - £6K Possibly the best compromise between saving money and enjoying the beauty of a brand new Porsche is to change every 2- 3 years. Pity the warranty is only for 2 years and not the 4 years it is in the USA.

I was told by my local stealer at the weekend that the new car warranty is increasing to 3 years and the AUC warranty to 2 years once we hit the new Manufacture Year in April/May, he told me this as I am looking at placing an order within the next month or so.
Interesting figures from my OPC dealer principle about depreciation re 997 C2S: 1st year: £25K (in fact 1st 6 months)
I can confirm that figure as my car is 6 months old and worth almost the same as a 56 plate on an OPC forecourt![:-] Having said that I did tell myself that this would be my car for the next 10 years if I bought it because I knew it would lose lots of money so I'm keeping her.....[:D]

ORIGINAL: zen4590 For me, Porsche ownership is an emotional experience and you can't really put a price on emotions (although I'd be lying if I didn't say losing 30k each time didn't also trigger some pretty strong emotions [;)] ).
Thats is so true.. [:D] When I manage to get time off I try to enjoy that time to the best of my abilities... that is where I enjoy the Porsche experience more so.. I could have a cheaper car and save the money, but like many comments on another thread- you are dead for a long time!! I also see the car as my hobby and in those terms- 25K isn't as much as some other hobbies [&:] The Turbo can be used in nearly all weathers and is great fun all round, so do get the use out of it.... if I get knocked down by 5K because I have higher mileage when I come to sell, then so be it... [:)] I've enjoyed owning and driving it. garyw

How awful indeed, mine has gone up from 40K to over 80K! [:D][:D][:D]

£35-40K low mileage 996 GT3 are never going to lose much. RS models of air cooled will continue to climb. You buy any standard road version 911 less than 3 years old and be prepared to lose a wedge. Greater supply than demand going forward. Its not rocket science and its never been any different in many many years........

Paid £65K for my 996 C2. Owned her for 9 happy years and sold her last week for £20K. I loved owning her, driving her, cleaning her and mentally licking her. Worth every penny. [:D]
