eBay Silver Rose

Pretty nice price, but it does look like it needs a lot of tidying (especially the rust [])

What are your plans for it Neil? Self restoration, long term project, quick sale for profit?

I'm going to fully restore it as a medium term project. The rusty door is quite unusual. I will be contacting southbound trimmers about the pink plaid cloth interior. I'll hopfully pick it up later this week and be better placed to report its condition. I've just ran an RAC data check (yeah, I know, stable door horse bolted, etc.) and it looks clean. The engine number shows as 47J00310. Is there any way of checking that this is a valid 'S' engine number. I'm not used to the turbo cars so haven't the foggiest!

Neil,
Your engine number would confirm that it is a 250bhp engine.
The first 2 characters (47) confirm this (220bhp engines start 44)
The next character J is for 1988 build year.
Then 00310 is the build number (i.e. yours was the 310th built)

The rusty door is quite unusual.

I take it all back - it was a very bad buy, burn the thing [;)]

I think it will be far cheaper (and make the car far easier to resell) just to convert the interior to a nice leather (grey, burgundy or even linen)

Graeme, thanks for the info. With 172K on the clock do you think it's the original turbo or will that have been replaced?

Paul, I'll have a look at other burgandy interiors cheers.[:D]

very brave Neil, it's going to be a long and expensive road...

but the I guess the Silver Rose is a relatively rare beast

good luck to you [:D]

Matt

Youd need to get it looked at by a specialist to determine the originality beyond the numbers matching up with its age.

I wouldn't value it higher for being a Rose to be honest. If the shell is solid then great, if not then break the thing.

It could "possobly" be a reasonable buy..????

As its a none sunroof model..AKA stiff shell .. So good for the track..???

BUT

Just looking at the current no plate it doesnt match the window etching.. Window says E*** BKE..??? LOOK closely.....
Is it a relative of Johns car.????

I hope the shell is solid + the rust is only surface...
Could be a GOOD "tuneable" car..Just hope youve got DEEP pockets....[;)][;)][;)]
BUT i dont know if i could cope with that interior dashboard colour.....[:'(][:'(][:'(]

Personally, I'd say you've got a good deal (notwithstanding the mileage....) You might want to consider replacing the head gasket & turbo !

Dave,
Well spotted, we ran a data check that shows the 'BKE' plate was its original 1988 mark, the second owner then put a private plate on it, which was then replaced with another 1988 plate when it change hands again. Shame it couldn't have had the original number back.

I have a new sill kicking around if that helps. I would need to check which side though. Let me know if you need any other panels as I'm going to have a clearout sometime soon.

Dont know much about the mechanics of the car but the people selling are Porsche breakers. So if it was only fit for breaking you would expect them to be selling it in bits now not in one big lump.

Hope it goes well.

Not necessarily; could be lack of space, need to get cash in quickly, thought they can sell it to someone who doesn't realise how bad it is/costly it will be to make good etc.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I don't mean to be negative and I hope it is a good one, but don't get sentimental about it because it's a Rose. It's never going to be worth a fortune and money doesn't go far on these cars.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I must admit I do have a soft spot for the Silver Rose cars. I passed one up when buying mine as it was a multi concours winner and so priced a few grand more than the car I got and I bottled it as I didn't think I would be able to keep the car upto the tip top condition it was in. In good condition you are looking at anywhere between £6k and £7k for a turbo of that age so by my reckoning you've got £3k to £4k to get it upto spec. Not alot if you are going to pay to have the work done by good proffessionals with brand new parts but as long as the body isn't in too bad nick under the surface and you are prepared to roll your sleeves up and do most of the work yourself or if you know someone in the trade who owes you a few favours it's certainly doable. Don't forget you can get body panels cheaper from one of the many decent Porsche breakers that are dotted around the country - Porscheapart and PH Sportscars spring to mind. I guess the first thing to do is to get the body upto spec before looking at the mechanicals. As long as the mechanicals run OK and there are no major problems there should be plenty of life in the old girl yet!!

Having said that I wish you all the luck in the world - you're a brave man but I would hate to see any example of a 944 broken up for the sake of a marginal business case - or even one that makes a slight loss - who doesn't make a loss on their 944's especially us turbo owners!!

Keep us posted.

Thanks for the kind words and sentiments. I too hope that the mechanicals are in good orders as suggested by the advert. The bodywork has unusual damage, i.e. rusty lower door edge and door mirrors that appear to have lost their paint. It's almost as if paint stripper has been thrown over the car and left. This may explain why the bonnet, badge panel and bumper have been (poorly) resprayed. Hmm, though the front wings would also have been hit. Anyway, enough speculation, we'll see on Thursday.......

Neil
Its probably been kept outside all its life...+ as its got 170ish000miles on it then its going to be "battle" worn...+ its almost 20 years old....Its probably not had much in the way of tlc over the years.....Looks like its going to get some now.....
PS it was Porschapart that sold the car......
BUT a good thing is its been looked after by Hartech most recently, + they know a thing or 2 about 944,s.....

Whack in a nice black leather interior/carpets etc, respray, and a decent set of design 90's.She'll look blummin lovely.
