First Impressions

ORIGINAL: VITESSE

The cars are quite clearly much longer with a profile more matching the Aston mould than before

I think the longer wheelbase adds to the impression. The 991 is actually 56mm longer than the 997, or 2" in old money.

Putting aside any initial concerns regarding increased dimensions, price & dodgy sunroof for a minute [;)], we must not overlook performance figures for the S (which when equipped with PDK and Sport+) are damn near that of 997 Turbo Gen 1. This along with reduced weight and already reported 'Ring' time leaves me in absolutely no doubt that it's going to be quite something to drive [:)]. Just hoping I get to find out sometime soon !

It's amazing really how Porsche can continue to move the game on so much with each iteration. We can only imagine what the Turbo and GT3 variants will be like but for sure knowing Porsche, they are going to be considerably more accomplished than any previous versions (and I rate Gen 2 Gt3 as best, most fun & involving car I have ever driven !).

Now coming back to my only concern with 991, that being price. My main issue being...I personally can't afford one [:(]. Obviously price is all relative to ones means. Hence as the Gen 2 Gt3s I have been lusting after since driving one are now approaching 70k, in my mind thats becoming "reasonable" whereas £95k for a nicely specced new 991 is not (simply as I'm comparing price to the used GT3 which I could now afford at a push). But...looking at my current car, some people must have thought me insane to have spent approaching £70k on it 2 yrs ago whereas £50k (or much less [&:]) now would make it reasonable to them. So really I think we should just applaud Porsche for continuing to develop and refine the 911 meaning that there is always something new for us to aspire to and finally own, no matter what ones financial situation happens to be.

So, give it 10yrs and I hope to be trading my Gen2 GT3 for a used 991 Turbo or GT3 (assuming that is nothing else happens on my car to make me lose the faith) [:D]

I guess that's what plenty of us will be doing.... letting someone else lose all the depreciation & picking up a very high spec low mileage 'stunner'...... but hopefully before 10 years[:)]

Re-reading an earlier Total 911 magazine ,I noted that the Ring time was set with the optional sport suspension setup which I don't think has yet been road tested in the Uk yet.
Wonder whether that will be suitable for our mix of A&B roads?

Found this photo, for me even though I am very happy with my 997 GT3RS Gen 2, I don't think this is enough of a change to justify losing big bucks, as I have already stated 90% of the public can't tell the difference between a 996 and 997. Just like 99% of the public cant tell the difference between a Ferrari 348 and a 430, just the Ferrari boys stare and say its a "Fiat" or a "bug" So for me No Change..... well for now anyway[]

A recent ground clearance issue with the GT3 meant I needed another packet of plastic poppers for the front splitter. What better reason needed for a 80 mile round trip to the nearest OPC than to collect £5.54 worth of parts.

I was in the OPC reception while the bits were found, idly glancing at the stock in the showroom. I hadn't attended the recent launch so was not tuned in so to speak but have to confess several minutes had passed before I realised I was looking at a 991.

Parts duly paid for I tootled home taking advantage of the light traffic and got to wondering whether I might have been a bit premature in placing a deposit on the new car. No doubt it is full of super trickery but do I really need more performance? I barely scratch the surface of what I have now? Better mpg would be nice but I would need to be doing intergalactic miles to make the change economic on those grounds.

So it will be interesting to hear how the new car is received in the real world. Generally speaking I find the views of the motoring press largely irrelevant but look forward to hearing what you new owners think.

That's really funny Nick! [:D]

I have seen 991s parked next to 997s in the Reading rear car park and you are right - it's really tough to tell them apart. The wing mirror placement is really the only obvious difference. That and the essay on the back describing the model.

Surely the whole point is that it has still to look like a 911! I wonder what they could do to the exterior to make it so easily recognizable as a 991 yet keep "that" shape? Same could be said about 996 to 997 (or more so)? Given that we probably spend 99% of the time in it driving and 1% standing outside admiring I suppose the real test is how it feels on the road?![;)] I'll let you know in a couple of weeks..........[:D]

Think the point I would make is, that when I spend this much on a car I would like to feel people seeing it are thinking WOW...look there goes the new 911 Porsche , then again maybe I am a show off and some owners just want to feel as they did with the last car. Whatever floats your boat.

I suspect 99% of the motoring public wouldn't know a Porsche from a Ferrari anyway unless they could read the name on the back, let alone a new 911 - so it could be a long time between "Wows"[;)]

You are having a laugh, after running a 430 and a GT3RS, I am sure they do from the reaction I get, most young people really do these days. It a nice thing

Agreed. But shape wise 993 to 996 was a big step backwards. 996 to 997 a smaller step forwards. 997 to 991 no obvious step in any direction at all.

Inside looked OK but not very different to 997 except the centre console taken from a different model. The one I looked at had buttons not paddles for the PDK so that's a fail. It also had 20" wheels which is a further fail, but at least it didn't have centre locks!

Only the privileged get to actually drive them Alan, so us lesser mortals will have to wait to pick up a few descriptive crumbs as they fall from the forum test drive table.

Cheers

You obviously have more knowledgeable and nicer young people than in these parts Martin! The reaction from other road users is sometimes not a nice thing either - but that's another story[:D]

Nick, I'm sure they would love to give you a test drive.[:)] I won't be changing however good it is but I still want to have a go!

After all the stories of fabulous food and free 991 models on offer.....I was really looking forward to tonight (not to mention finally seeing 991 in the metal for 1st time).

But then when I arrived and they had to write my name on the Z-List sheet (as "sorry, your name is not on the list sir")....I was reminded of my cherished customer status and also that I live in a less affluent part of the country (as I didn't see any such gifts being handed out...not even to those who were invited [:D]).

Anyway, they were kind enough to not leave me outside in the rain and even allowed me to take some photos :-

Love the interior, as everyone has said, a real step up in quality (however, felt a bit more like sitting in a Jag / Merc than in a 911 if you know what I mean ???)

Please please, have yours de-badged...I assure you...we know what it is !!!

Errrr......this :-

Or this for £2,000 less (SORRY !!) :-

So, this hasn't changed my first impressions...

Lovely looking car, gorgeous interior, very dodgy sunroof, slightly dodgy over-badging at the rear, way too expensive (given what else you could buy for same money..or is it just me ????)....can't wait to drive one [:D][:D]

Great pics!

I would worry if I left the spoiler up in a car park - or someone might remove something from the engine bay (seems like a lot of access there now) or even just rip out a few wires for fun.

Also, do the hips look different in the side mirrors to the 997, or is it just me?

Apart from the sunroof - I do think the 991 is about 10% better looking than the 997. But you have to look pretty hard to see it.

Hi Oggy

Nice to chat and catch up with you last night at OPC Bolton after all those years!

It was a really good reception and the dipslay were well thought out. I am still not sure I like the rear end - just seems to have lost the smoother lines of the 997. Too many ledges and a little too bulbous for me. All the bling badges makes it look cheap to me. Who needs all that on the back?

I found the DJ was definately worth looking at though. Curves in just the right places !! Nice deck too ;-)

From my iPhone I'm afaraid - and my hands were not too steady. Could that have been the champagne?

Excellent Pics spoiled only by the colour of the car (pax Alan! [;)])

Does it have a handbrake? If so where is it? Please don't let it have an electro mechanical switch.

Unusual to find good news in the small print but I note 3 year Porsche Approved Warranty incl in the price. (Not sure if that is the same as a factory warranty but OK all the same). In the alphabet soup does PDCC include PTV or is it just the new PASM and PSM? I presume POSIP is standard and, despite the eye watering price, no PCCB on this car.

Cheers

Hi Peter !

Yes, was really great to meet up again [:)]

Did you see this one in the "Vintage" 911 display...

IMG_2643.jpg

Looks familiar...[;)]

I also noticed the DJ however decided on that evening, I had more chance of getting into the new 911 [:D]

It has an electric parking brake, somewhere under the dash, which seems an odd place to put it - bit Merc like

Don't understand why they didn't put it in the centre console, like they do in say an audi A6 - there's lots of blank buttons there anyway
