Floor Mats

I was about to agree with Fen when I was hit between the eyes by the "£180 for some floormats" post! [] What are they made from? Spun gold with platinum embroidery thread? Or pure unobtanium?

I know I come across as a complete cheapskate on here quite often, partially because I simply don't have a big budget and partially because I can't justify spending alot on my car, but that seems like a LOT to me. (I got a two bedroom flat carpeted in good-quality carpet for a little over twice that about 4 years ago ... !)

I have a large piece of black wool carpet I bought around 10 years ago which has produced many floormats for many cars over the years. It cost £20. Yes, you need to bind the edges, but the end result works every bit as well as the 'Porsche'-branded (and southbound-priced) mats and leaves you with about £175 to spend on something else.

£180 on mats? Sheesh! Phrases involving fools and money and parting the two come to mind when I read things like that. (George - this wasn't meant personally, I'm sure they are lovely mats.)

From memory Keith at Prestige Parts, who I recommended some posts ago, charged about £40 last time I bought some (for my cab about 3 1/2 years ago).

I totally agree with Oli about the ease and cost of doing it yourself (ideally if you have a worn set to get the pattern from), but if your time is valuable, you haven't got source materials nor the necessary machine to whip stitch the edge etc. (like me) then that is a lot more like it. Keith is also a very, very decent bloke and a 944 enthusiast (though I think only of some years ago). He's also the man to see for gear gaiters in OE leather colours among many other things and he can get parts carbon fibre covered in the same factory Porsche use so the quality is awesome, but that isn't cheap.

That's the snag. It takes time. Funny thing is that I enjoy doing things like that, and hence get a double kick out of it. (Yes my father is a Yorkshireman. Yes, I am weird [8D] !)

Edges can be done with edging tape. Around £1/metre, and 6 metres will do a pair of front mats ... and saving £175 for a couple of hours work works out similar to doing a service yourself. Plus you can do it inside, in the warm and dry, swigging a beer from time to time ...

I have lots of more important things to do with my "spare" time. Or so I'm told anyway [:(]

BTW Oil: New sig. Have you finally cracked and bought a Turbo? [:D]

You talkin' to me mate? (Broken-armed-typist-syndrome again?)

No. Just feeling poor. Looked at the parts prices in ECP for Mk2 Golf GTi's the other day. Pair of decent front disks and you get change from £25. Substitute £220 for the similar parts for my S2. While the 944 is a better car than my old Golf, I'm not sure that the degree of improvement is justified by the degree of greater cost ...

[:(] At this rate I'll have to amend my signature with a blanket apology to Oil, Partick, Jihn and anyone else who's name I've mangled. Sorry all.

I actually have both my arms again as the (8 sections) of wire inserted have stabilised the break so even the padded bandage I had has been removed and I am supposed to do "light exercise". I can use it to type, but I can't reach my mouth with a fork as the ligaments have shrunk - which reminds me I need to phone the physiotherapist.

I have the PorscheShop own make mats for my 968 and while they are not the best in the world, I'm pretty sure I paid less that £40 for them.
By the way, the retaining brackets that my car has from some OEM mats in it's past both point straight forwards from the seat runners. The right hand one is not under the hand brake.

Actually Fin *, I was quite flattered. I thought that having your name mangled by you was the ultimate sign of acceptance into the folds of 944 enthusiast-dom. [:)]

Please, carry on!

Oil.

P.S. If you remove the comment about your arm above then you can carry on using the excuse. You've shot your own fox by putting it like that. Besides, if you can't get a fork into your own mouth, you probably can't get a beer bottle up there either, which must be much more of a hardship ...

P.P.S * - Not original, I know. Originally used by Jihn Sims, I believe, around mid-2007.

My drinking arm remains mercifully healthy, and I have to confess to using "Jihn" long before I broke the other one.

If it's an elite then I have to train my fingers to type Palu, Nikc, Peret and Toyn at the very least, and having just typed them they are tricky. At least Palu and Nikc cover half the forum [:D]

I like the look of those last ones and am in need of some new mats myself (though not £180 in need!). AS they are a US firm and presumably tailored for LHD cars would that be an issue for fitment/pedal snagging for our cars ?

Simply use them upside down, for a cheap but effective RHD conversion? [&:]

oops sooorrrrrrry [:(]

I love the overmats that came with my S2 but I've no idea who manufacturered them

The Porsche 968 mats DO fit, they are a slightly different shape from the original 944 ones, but they DO fit,one of the fixings is attached at a slight angle but looks fine and attaches fine, got them in both my cars,in my red car i am on my second set.Cheapest and best and most original looking.I am going to take a photo when i get a minute and post it on here.
