Garage test drove car after changing tyres - I'm fuming

I keep my Tracker Fob in my iphone wallet and would have been keen to tell Cobra yes it has been taken without my permission which it Had !!!!!

If you think it appropriate bearing in mind your ongoing discussions with the Vauxhall Dealer Principal, below is the direct email of the Chairman of Vauxhall UK, Tim Tozer.

Not technically the responsibility of Vauxhall UK, but if the "ship hits the sand" in terms of PR - they will take action if only behind the scenes.

The only danger of hitting the nuclear button is that you can't always control the fallout, but worth having to hand as a point of persuasion.

Best of Luck

I'm with you, I wouldn't be impressed. No way should they have to test drive the car to check balancing, that should be done on the machine. I, too, in over 40 years of driving haven't come across that one. More like some hairy ar_ed mechanic fancied a go in your pride and joy. Definitely a complaint to the dealer principal. Although perhaps a lesson learned in not using a Porsche dealer or specialist more used to handling such cars!

I can't believe a grease monkey took the car out after changing the tyres to test ! I have never heard of that.
I would certainly be choosy as to where the car was taken for repairs. I think there is case to persue a TWOC.

spoken to the police but they didn't want to know, apparently it is a civil matter, nothing from **** ******* customer services yet either...[]

Edited to comply with forum rules[;)]

A girlfriend had a sports car which the mechanics could not resist to take for a spin whilst it was in for service and they rolled it!

Since then when I get my tyres fitted I wait outside, and on one occassion when they said they needed to test drive the car (again my girlfriends), knowing what a load of rubbish it was and based on past experience, I said fine and jumped in the passenger seat!

With the Porsche I will just take the wheels in alone using the family wagon.

If you have a Tracker, can you call them and ask for a record of movement?

I would say that Twitter is your friend here, so long as you're measured, but I suspect you're dealing with the bottom-feedng part of the motor 'trade' who won't give a toss.

As said above, taking (driving) the vehicle without the owners consent is a criminal offence and you could involve the police. Mention that to the DP.
Sorry should have looked above re police involvement, although (in my view) its not a civil matter. Im guessing you were never asked whether they could drive it to test and never signed any paperwork to that effect?
Good luck.

I'd imagine that every garage, including tyre fitters, have full insurance to cover them driving customer's cars, and terms and conditions including the right to test drive them without calling the customer and getting written permission every time?

Whilst this is clearly a case where that's not been necessary, and the OP should have the people in question pay for a full report on any possible future issues like over-revving, I can't see it as any sort of crime?

Totally unnecessary and we would only test drive a car if a customer came in with a specific complaint re balance etc. This is normally carried out with the customer in the passenger seat so that they can advise us on the problem they are having. I would want to know if they test drive every car they fit tyres to or just the tasty ones? If they don't test drive every car then why did they see fit to test drive your car? We simply don't have enough time in the day to test every car we fit tyres to.

yes matt thanks, that is exactly what i thought
my phone calls have turned into written letters from my legal team and i have been promised a written response from the offending group within 7 days...this is the 5th!
i'll let you all know what happens

UPDATE: they have agreed to pay for an over rev test at my OPC.....so I'm pleased with that. Will let you know the results!

Although the situation was totally wrong, isn't taking a Porsche to a Vauxhall dealer for tyre fitment just a bit optimistic?

It's only tyre fitting, should be able to take it where I like mate!
Should -but obviously can't [;)]

I only took mine to a trusted centre, looking at what it would cost to have a damaged rim repaired by someone un-experienced- let alone should they take the motor for a spin.
I can get tyres a lot cheaper from Black circles etc but its the fitting centres that stop me from doing so.

The good news is they are paying for a check and then you can rest peacefully and enjoy the car.

Of course the over rev check might show up something that wasn't caused by the incident in question......[8|]

Oooh now that's going to be interesting, especially if the hour markers are close to the point you gave them the car...

Of course you can - the suggestion was that this was perhaps not the best idea and this thread is perhaps evidence of that?

At least you have highlighted the issue with getting your 997 tyres changed at Vauxhall [:)]
