Gearbox rebuild or S/H?

Yes quite, apparently there is an influx of low mileage crash cars at the moment as the breakers I've tried have offered gearbox's with 75,000, 67,000 and 63,000 miles. Strange isnt it? Edd

Ha ha [;)] yes you are right to be cynical in this respect. Just as our latest mileage survey seems to indicate that the average mileage on our vehicles is going down [&:] Obviously the high mileage wrecks are rusting to pieces and the low mileage cars are all crashing into eachother :ROFLMAO:

Sounds a bit like the box I bought a few years back from a breaker, it was supposedly from one of their own personal cars, was described as perfect in every way and well worth the substantial premium they were asking for it. Needless to say once fitted it was discovered it was complete unusable junk...

Just ordered a box of Porch-Apart as they appear be be a more trustwrthy source as they are not breakers/salvage and some good things have been said about them. The box was a litle more expensive but considering the mileage (67,000 which I'm pretty sure is genuine) its not too bad at just a little over £600 delivered. If it is genuine miles, it may be quite a find... Edd

ORIGINAL: Diver944 The one item that I bought from Douglas Valley was totally misdescribed. They were very unhelpful with my complaint and wanted me to pay the carriage to return it. I will never use them again. I've never had a problem with anything from Porsch Apart
+1. DVB are expensive and you get little for it. Im always ready to criticise Simon for being dear, but I'll always add that you know where you stand with him. Id go without before dealing with DVB. With regards to mileage: theyll be lying. The psychological cut off is about 75,000 miles, so breakers will describe a reasonably fit transaxle as being under that, usually. Ive just seen the last comment before mine: breakers is exactly what they are!

Ok, got the car back today after having s/h gearbox put in from Porsch-Apart and new clutch fitted and all I can say is wow what a difference! No noise what so ever from the gearbox and the noisy clutch release bearing has also been cured. I'm well happy... I guess we'll never really know what the real cause of the issues was, I'm just happy its not there anymore, I can change into 3rd perfectly normally too, its great! Like a new car... Still slightly miffed (understatement) that a previous Indie had apparently changed my gearbox all about 1 week ago, today I saw it come out of my old box and it was extremely black and dirty, full of black sludge and sh*t. Going ask for my money back.... Edd

Congrats, it sounds like your car now has a nicely quiet transmission. I have always wanted to have an S2 with a quiet transmission but although I replaced both the gearbox and the transmission tube it still makes some uncomfortable noise. Enjoy!

I'd like to resurrect this thread as i, like Copperman 7yrs ago, am now facing a gearbox replacement.

The problem: Gearbox clattering when you come on or off the gas, black oil smelling of burning

Also: Slight whining, awkward shift into second

I think i the whining can be lived with on its own, but the clattering and burnt oil are indicative of something serious

Copperman got a box he was happy with from Porsche-Apart, but a quick internet search turns up a company called Porschegearboxes.com amongst a host of others offering Porsche gearboxes supposedly 'reconditioned'. I've spoken to Porschtek in Leeds, my indy, and the original problem discussed on this thread of people selling any old crap as 'reconditioned' is still alive and kicking, and Porschtek now refuse to supply or suggest suppliers of gearboxes because of trust issues and unrecoverable losses due to guarantee work.

So, does anyone know of a consistently reliable supplier of gearboxes be they s/h or recon that i can use to get one for my 1986 924S? Does anyone know what causes the 924S gearbox to clatter and blacken its oil like mine?

I can appreciate this subject has been flogged to within an inch of it's life, but once more into the breech??

Probably the other end of the country from you (unless you travel a long way to get a service :) ) but [link=https://www.hardyengineering.co.uk/]https://www.hardyengineering.co.uk/[/link] have been around a long time - I used to pass them on my paper round in the 80's. I used them to rebuild a vw gearbox around 2010 and they were good then, delivered on time and budget, my wife hasn't managed to kill it again in the 6 years since.
