GT Legends

Yep - soon as I buy a copy. We need to set up a regular night for online racing if a few others also buy

It took a lot of effort to get it to work (which was really because something on my PC seems to grab all the CPU every 30 seconds or so) but now it is it's awesome![FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Fantastic fun in a Lotus Cortina following 1 foot off the back bumper of a MkII Jag with a twitchy rear end through Craner. The TVR Griff 400 sounds fantastic pulling away from said Cortina down the back straight (sorry, I know Donny quite well but not all the names) but it didn't have the brakes to get through the chicane in front. Maybe I need to try the next skill level though I guess.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I have never been into Minis but I was disappointed with the Cooper S - very understeery. I need to play with settings I think because in the one Mini Se7en race I have watched it seemed they were set up to swap ends as soon as the wheel is turned unless the throttle is wide open. I'm sure the physics engine is there to replicate that, I certainly managed to get the Cortina to do that on the brakes with a ham fisted tweak before my last go, but it isn't such an advantage with RWD![FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Everyone who is into driving and can muster a decent PC and a steering wheel should buy this; it's the best racing game ever - it beats GTR because in that if you got Craner a bit wrong then at some point you were going to hit the barrier hard but in GTL you can gather up the slide and just lose a place or two.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]It's like driving in the Goodwood Revival, basically.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Oh, we most certainly need to get a regular night going, Paul. Do you still play GTR or GPL on line regularly?

Yes. Our GPL league migrated into a GTR league and we race every Monday night. There are so many online bugs with GTR though that most people have been waiting for GTL to come out.

Anyone can join our league - just logon to the Pistonheads gassing station and look in the 'computer games' section.

I look forward to seeing you in my mirrors [:D]

More likely you'll be seeing me in your windscreen, then through the side window etc. first - repeat as necessary.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]My sodding PC has just decided to go into a reboot loop (typing this on laptop that has no hope of running GTL) so I can't play it [:(][FONT=verdana, geneva"]

My sodding PC has just decided to go into a reboot loop so I can't play it [:(]

Yeah, yeah, yeah....... I just have to mention that I may get the game and the excuses start appearing :ROFLMAO:

Turns out the knob for adjusting the CPU fan speed is dicky and it was running too slow and overheating [8|]

Sorry to hear about your dicky knob.....

What steering wheels are you guys using for this? It kills me to use the keyboard and its not very realistic. Any recommendations?

Thanks, Phil

I have a Microsoft Sidewinder FF that I can't use any more as it isn't USB - if you still have what used to be called a MIDI port on your soundcard and wave say £25 my way it's a fine wheel and yours. I replaced it with the Logitech one that was specially made for GT4 on the Playstation with 320 degrees rotation or whatever, which I do like better than the Sidewinder because it has stronger force feedback and a stick shift to emulate (sequential) gearchange.

Most of the faster drivers in the games I play, swear by the Logitech Momo FF. I have a Thrustmaster Ferrari FF which is a budget wheel and works fine (but I do blame it for my lack of speed [;)] )

A good wheel really does work wonders with these simulations. When set up correctly you can 'feel' when your car is losing grip, or you've locked the brakes etc.

Don't have a game port - checked last night when I dug out a powerpad type controller. Looks like I need to visit pcworld to see whats about and then buy it cheaper from just about anywhere else.

I downloaded the demo and blame my frequent trips into the gravel on my keyboard. I even managed to somehow flip the car over a fence at the side of the track and had no way of getting back on [:(] Love the game though.

Phil

I parked the Lotus at the wrong side of the fence in the demo too and that was with a wheel [:(][FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]To be honest it isn't worth playing with the keys IMO; Paul is absolutely right with my wheel I can actually feel the front wheels starting to lose grip.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Well, I have to say "don't knock it until you've tried it". I imagine we'd all rather be driving for real but even track days are not something any of us can afford to do all the time, never mind race. Modern PC's are plenty powerful enough to handle the quite complex physics models made of various cars plus the graphics and AI of opponents these days and with decent controllers it can be close enough to the real thing to make it fun. It's also a good way to learn circuits, lines and about car set-up.

Totally agree (but then I would, wouldn't I [:D])

I was of the same opinion as Chris until a planned trip to the Nurburgring with the Register some years back. Having heard the fearsome stories about the circuits 182 curves and how difficult it was to learn them, I bought a copy of Grand Prix Legends because it had an accurate rendition of the track. When I finally turned up at the real Ring, I at least knew exactly which corner was coming up next.

After that I was hooked because of the online racing against other real people around the world (ok then other geeks [;)])

.........and it's not a game, it's a simulation [8|]

Any of you play games on laptops? I'm just about to get a pretty high spec laptop (3.2 GHz, 1024 Mb Ram, 100Mb HDD) through a deal with work to replace my 5+ yr old desktop (which is now next to useless for anything other than keeping up with the PCGB forum!) and fancy getting a good driving game. This one sounds like it might be a good one but are there any specific issues with playing games like this on laptops (never had a laptop before)? Also I will be running my broadband through a wireless router so are there any problems with doing this?

your wireless will always run faster than broadband, so i wouldn't worry about that. (wireless is 54Mbps vs. 2Mbps broadband(my 512Kbs actually only runs at ~35-kbps))

I use a laptop too, but honestly, you'll struggle running the latest generations of games due to the graphics capabilities. on my newish Sony, I struggle to run things like Doom3. it will run, but don't expect smooth gameplay.

I tried GTL on my 2 1/2 year old IBM T30 with a P4-M 2GHz and 512Mb RAM and it ran at a very low frame rate. I have an IBM T41 also but even that is over a year old in terms of release so I doubt would be much better.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Where most laptops struggle is in graphics. My desktop has an ATI 9800 Pro video card with 128Mb RAM (and an AMD 3200+ with 1Gb system RAM) and that is considered low-end for GTL etc. (though it runs it with enough eye-candy at a high enough frame rate to be fine) and I don't know that even modern laptops have anything like that amount of grunt behind their video.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]

So you're suggesting the weak link might be the video card rather than the actual LCD screen capabilities. The video card will be a 256Mb ATI Radeon X600 (I have no clue if this is good or not) so it sounds like I would be tetering round the minimum spec. I'll give it a go anyway as I'm planning a Nurburgring excursion next year and could do with a bit of upfront preparation!
