It could well be the X600 is better than my 9800Pro, but I don't really keep up with such things rather I do some research when the time comes to upgrade - it certainly has twice the video RAM and the CPU and system RAM are on a par or better than my desktop (which must be 18+ months old). The LCD itself will be fine, in fact I use an LCD panel on my desktop nowadays (another IBM bit of kit and it's superb quality).

I'm afraid I'm in the same boat as Fen, I only look at these things when i'm in the market too. however, with a modern monitor, your limitations are always with the graphics card. It's the same sort of thing as buying a CPU anyway, the bigger the numbers, the better. (which usually involves a larger number after one of these: £, too!)
Chances are if you had a monitor off an old x386, then it may prove troublesome......

Also I will be running my broadband through a wireless router so are there any problems with doing this?
ORIGINAL: pikey7
your wireless will always run faster than broadband, so i wouldn't worry about that. (wireless is 54Mbps vs. 2Mbps broadband)
Just to be pedantic, network transfer rates are usually quoted in bits (b), where internet connection speeds are advertised in bytes (B).
So in this example it's more like 6.75MB/s vs. 2MB/s; as noted, there is plenty of headroom there but always make sure you haven't got a download client like BitTorrent/Azureus running in the background as this will hog your downstream bandwidth ruthlessly. Turning off virus-scan etc. can also clear issues with the game not running correctly.

Well, I have to say "don't knock it until you've tried it".
OK I've tried it.
Thanks a lot. Now I've got three days work piled up as I can't put the bloody thing down. I'm off to get a steering wheel and new graphics card and I'll be ready for battle.......

A good graphics card will make a world of difference. I added a 128mb nvidia one to my old Celeron 2.6 ghz and GTR really improved. I have the same card in my new 'puter which is a 3.2 ghz and it runs just the same, proving that the processor is not the main restriction.
Chris, you've started down a slippery slope [&o]

Looks like we have a PCGB league in the making here []
All we need is to agree a regular date and time each week for the race (I propose Wednesday at 8pm) and then one of us starts to host the track from about 7pm onwards. This gives everyone a chance to practice and chat to eachother before qualifying starts. Usual jibes like 'Fen is rubbish', 'nice spin Tony' []
Qualifying for 15 mins starts on the dot at 8pm and then a 30 minute race straight afterwards (allowing a few minutes to refuel, change tyres etc).
Usual GP points system 10 for a win, 8 for 2nd, 6 for 3rd, going down to 1 point for 8th place
So who is up for a practice race this Wednesday at 8pm?
assuming my game arrives tomorrow [&:]

You'll get pretty short odds on me being rubbish, but you think Tony will spin? I haven't tried the on-line part yet, in fact I haven't played it at all since last Sunday and I'm just trying to unlock tracks and get money to buy decent cars so far. Is there an in-game voice chat or do you have to type? If it's the latter may I recommend TeamSpeak? I am happy to host the server part of it as I have done in the past and which works well with my static IP address. It allows real-time chat between players by pushing a button on the steering wheel.

Julian, most gamers agree that the Logitech MOMO racing wheel is the best, but it's pricey at £80 from Amazon. I have a Thrustmaster Ferrari Force Feedback wheel which works well and has lasted two years. It costs £25 from Amazon.
The Microsoft Sidewinder force feedback wheel also receives good reviews and costs around £60 IIRC
Things to look for are a good solid clamp to keep it on the desk as you throw it around the corners or punch it when you drive into the gravel - again [8|]

Fen, I believe the online system works just like GTR (I dont have the game yet to confirm).
Basically when you select online it takes you into a chat Lobby where it lists several online games taking place at the moment. You start a new game, select the circuit, cars allowed etc and call it something like PCGB with a password of PCGBFORUM
Once in the game you simply hit C and then type your chat whilst driving, or you can sit in the pit garage watching others spin off whilst happily typing taunts from there []
All I've done so far is drive the Lotus Elan and Corvette around the Dijon short circuit - best lap so far is 1:19

I've started a game from the main lobby called PCGB
The password is PCGBFORUM in CAPS
Remember to register for the online game using the code on the back of the instruction manual. I'm in there practising now, hopefully see you in there.
Let me know if you can't get in - it means I've arsed something up [8|]
