GT4 .... "Keep" or "Sell" ???!!!

This really cheeses me off to be honest.

"don't drive the car enough"

"Scared of hurting the cars value".. are you a Porsche lover and driver or an investor?

 
Well he is a PCGB member ... there are plenty who are not ... ?

Would a seasoned investor be asking ???

Most people buy cars expecting depreciation ... when all of a sudden values increase, this changes the metric.

And we all know this is 1. Artificial and 2. Probably short term .... hence a not unreasonable question.

My advice would be to drive it assuming the value will reduce, but the posters priorities may be different form mine ....

The educated comment from motoring commentators is that there still isn't a better car out there of this type, for the money.

Gentlemen,
Advice needed - I am not sure whether to sell or keep the GT4 ... I don't drive the car enough, scared of hurting the cars value adding mileage and find the driving window a bit narrow (dry roads - afternoon to myself) etc so not really getting any real satisfaction out of the car, except to look at in the garage and wondered with the GT market "flat lining" across the board now whether i should sell ... Whats everyones thoughts on the market etc ... and situation?!

I have to say that I'm with Clive on this. It's a car to be driven, so there seems little point in it residing in your garage for it just to be admired. Use it or sell it.

If the spec's good then you'll have little trouble selling it and you'll probably recoup your original purchase price.

Autumn may not be the best time to sell and there are still quite a few GT4s for sale, so maybe you should consider holding off until spring?

Totally agree with Jeff, I sometimes think I don't drive my 987 enough but then get in it and do a 100 miles or so trip, I no longer commute and choose my journeys for which car I use, I still prefer the Cayman for whatever so it will stay in my case.

Sell the GT4 if you are not driving it enough. These cars are meant for driving, not sitting in the garage. I have to ask, why did you buy it and what did you expect to use it for?

I was unsuccessful in getting an order in at my OPC for a GT4 when launched as the allocation was full and I refused to pay the ridiculous prices thereafter.

As a keen track day driver and tourer, the irony of your experience is not lost on me.

I am in the same boat as op and often think about selling as don't use enough but I would still end up buying another car at some stage so what do you end up buying? Yes prices are a bit flat at the moment but I still see the car at what I paid for it and some in a years time so I am not loosing in real terms only if I bought to make a premium which I never did but I do buy cars now with the least risk of large depreciation and have done quiet well over the last 8 years. I recently bought a new fiesta as my daily that had £15.5k rrp but I bought as a pre reg delivery miles car and saved nearly £5k , I also did this with my last Porsche 987spyder and saved £15k of rrp so if you bought your GT 4 at list cannot see you loosing much if at all over 5 years of ownership better than money sitting in the bank or loosing £5-10k a year on another lesser car!

Bottom line if you need the money sell if not then keep and enjoy those odd days you get to drive one of the best Caymans/Porsche ever built!

My converted 981CS tipped into 36k miles on track last Wednesday at Estoril, 20k miles with 3.8L engine. A GT4 on the Iberian track event celebrated its 50th track outing at Jerez today.

They are for driving....

 
Here 's a thing , sell it at somewhere near what you paid for it ( but a little less for depreciation, age , mileage etc, no longer a new car) to an enthusiast that would REALLY have enjoyed it and would cherish being able to get out in it and drive and put a smile on his face knowing he has one of the best cars Porsche have EVER made .....I am with BJ on this , just move it on ...........

 
And you are in a quandry old chum.... .... Wasn't but 3 weeks ago ,you were asking whether a Cayman R you were thinking about 'adding' was a good stablemate for the GT4 ? ......

Either way, at a sensible price there would be plenty of buyers ....

i think some of the comments are somewhat un-kind ... I love the car - hence asking the question in the first place, i realise its one of the best cars Porsche have ever made otherwise i wouldn't have bought it in the first place ... I sold a fantastic 997 GTS that has gone up in value more than the GT4 in the same time frame ... The market "not me" has dictated that these cars are very mileage sensitive, more so than a 991 GT3 RS which is crazy! To be honest i preferred the GTS in 90% of driving scenarios ... i bought the GT4 to Track but just never get round to it - i drove the GTS on a Tour to Le Mans, the GT4 is a great car but as i said; it has a narrow band width of useability and i also have a Gti Clubsport S and an M3 of which i enjoy driving as much as the GT4, especially the Clubsport S which is more fun and just as quick as the GT4. I want to use my Porsche GT4 more as i used my GTS 5 times as much as the GT4 and bought the GT4 with the same ideas in mind - so the people who say just drive it are not realising that that is what i want to do but 1) The cars bandwidth 2) Its value make this difficult in comparison to the 997 GTS which i would say is the best Porsche money can buy "Pound for Pound" the trouble with the GT4 is that it was bought by speculators, not drivers and anything over 7k miles is considered high mileage which is totally crazy but because they sit in garages, as an owner you feel you can't touch them; even if you want too ... Anyway - only a couple of people have actually answered my question ... Local OPC says that GT prices are falling and that i should sell to them, but they would say that, again; hence the post...! Ultimately, i think i want to go back to a 997 GTS but good luck finding one of them now ;(

 
It sounds like you have sellers/buyers remorse to me.

Sell the GT4 and try and get your old 997 GTS back....

 
Sell it and start enjoying the car(s) you have otherwise. Too many cars = not enough time to drive them all... nice position to be in, but seems you’ll always have this problem if you can’t decide what you would like [;)]... best of luck with them all.

In fairness I think that you're laying yourself wide open to all sorts of comments, both positive and negative, with this sort of post.

As I said earlier, I think it best either to use it or sell it hopefully to someone who's going to drive it regularly and get enjoyment from that without worrying about putting on mileage or getting it a bit grubby.

It's clear from your last post that you found the 997 GTS more to your liking so why not sell the GT4 (and the M3 perhaps?) and look for a 997 GTS; then you'd only have to choose which of two cars to drive.

As usual, just my tuppence worth of course.

The thing is, what is driving it enough? I used to commute in my first Cayman S and one year that amounted to 20,000miles but most years were 8-10,000 so quite typical mileage. Other years it was as low as a few hundred miles in months but I knew that when my situation changed mileage would increase greatly so kept the car as I knew that it would make my later commuting fun.

Some think that 3-4,000 is enough, it's all up to the person and when other cars are available, well they have to be brought into the equation too, how many miles are for business and social and how many just for the fun of it?

How we justify running cars to ourselves is sometimes to our own financial conscience, am I wasting money when it could be safe in the bank....

 
I'm new to Porsche (just over 8 months). Mines a daily, obviously I'm a little concerned about residuals, but ha ho, you only live once.

I got it to drive it and I'm not in a silly salary bracket either. What ever I sell it for, whenever that maybe, is what I have got for a new/different car, or if my numbers come up.
