GT4 service

Pete, I was in my local Costco in Chester at the end of last week and had a look to check the price. £29.38 inc VAT

Indeed, Costco had a stand offering membership at last weekend's Oulton Park Gold Cup weekend and they even had some of the Mobil 1 oil on the table on their stand

Perhaps I should buy some more

Can anyone tell me the minimum depth for GT4 brake pads, please? I cannot see mention of it in the handbook.

Without removing them all I can say is that they are pretty even thickness all round, possibly around 6mm but I realise that a good proportion of that is backing, not friction material.

My local OPC do a free video walk around/inspection which includes tyres and geometry check, each time it goes in for any attention. I guess if you are not minded to pay attention to these things, it is a good source of additional business.

Opie oils - £34.35 x 5lt. Mobile 1 FS 0w40 delivered.

Still £29.38 inc VAT at my local Costco. Apparently you cannot buy on their online shopping service as they feel that the oil is flammable and so cannot be delivered by a courier. Good that Opie feel differently, for those not in striking range of a Costco store

Sure, but Costco is a membership by subscription service isn't it?

So there are collection and sub. costs to be added in too. [8|]

Something else I'd welcome comments on before the car goes in on Tuesday; I recently drove the car in extremely wet conditions which lasted for over an hour with lots of standing water and since then (it could be a coincidence), I've been experiencing the knocking sound that other people have mentioned, apparently from the rear suspension.

There is little or no consistency to what causes the noise but it s a noticeable clunk usually when hitting a bad (but not severe) bump in the road and then it seems to do it again 2 or 3 times until it seems to settle down again. It is almost as if something has been nudged out of position then re-locates again. My 964RS clunks if water gets in the front suspension (heavy rain, jet-wash) but it is only very temporary whereas in the GT4 it has lasted for around a month so far.

This subject received a fair mount of coverage a while ago, possibly on Pistonheads; did anyone get to the bottom of the problem and, if so, is there a OPC solution, please?

Ian,

I think a lot of complaints came from owners who had the roll cage fitted which is bolted directly to the rear strut tops. Impacts travel through the damper and top mount and into the cage structure, apparently producing a "twang" rather than a knock.

From memory I don't think you have that option fitted but I suppose that the source of the knock could well be the same. Strange that it has been triggered when the suspension has been subjected to a rain lashing.

There are quite a few differences between the standard 981 rear suspension and that of the GT4 (unique wheel carriers, reinforcements on the cross-member and control arm as well as an additional reinforcement strut on the anti-roll bar mount) and I'm not aware of there being a problem on the standard cars. Somehow I can't see any of those mods being the source of the noise but the inverted damper is fitted with a helper spring in series with the main spring to reduce the mass of the spring system. Maybe the noise emanates from the interface between the two springs but again I can't see how water can be an important contributing factor, although of course that could be red herring.

Sorry, not much help but hope you get it fixed soon.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff,

Good information nonetheless. You are correct, no cage in mine. I remember reports about noises associated with roll cages but there was one guy who had a real problem with the rear suspension and was struggling to get it to occur under inspection, which I can fully understand.

I mentioned my old car as you can guarantee that if I jet-wash under the front wheel arch, the front suspension will clunk for a few minutes particularly when manoeuvring. It has always done so and always goes away quickly.

Aah, I've just Googled it and there's a lot about it on there, I have a look....

Ian

I've had a spring dislodge (if that is the correct expression) from the perch on my helper/main spring rear set up, but it was a consistent state. Fixed by CG who installed it all and no reoccurrence.

Just got the technicians video on the GT4 from JCT600 Leeds ... he thinks that my brakes are squeaking because I have non Porsche discs fitted and recommends that I should put the old ones back :)

Sweet. The only thing that squeaks on that car when I'm braking, is the passenger !

Maybe the brakes were just wet :)

But fair do's, no complaints about the different suspension, dampers etc ... and interesting that I've got 12mm left on the front pads and 10mm on the rear after a Spa day, Zandvoort evening, Donnington day and a Croft day ... this disc and pad combination just gets more and more impressive ... and good to know.

I have known my local PC to do a "Free Alignment Check" and once advised me that the left rear was out of line and that I would have severe tyre wear only shortly after CG had done a full alignment! I chose to stick with CG's settings and the tyres lasted longer than previously, oddly enough, they said the same thing after I had the gen2 realigned by another specialist ( Zentrum near Nottingham ) who set the gen2 to similar settings I had the previous car set to.

I doubt the expertise at the PC's at times, ok for services and stamping up in my view.

Oh 'me' of little faith. They did carry out a geo check afterall which showed 2 corners being 'out' with slight tyre wear issues to match.

The service at OPC Leeds was entirely satisfactory; on arrival they allowed me to have a good check round the car whilst it was on the ramps with three staff in attendance (service, technician, manager), kept me updated via telephone and video and did not try and force-feed unnecessary work on me or my car. (the brakes were 'green' according to the feeler-guage depth check).

Incidentally, lots of their lovely 'classic' stock had 'sold' stickers on them including the 2.7RS

So Leeds did good ... again.

As an aside, did you see the 968CS at almost £50k ??

Collectable at last !!

I did, Chris. It looked really nice and straight. And desirable. It had nearly 100k miles though which was definitely not reflected in the condition. It may have been through their classic workshops. The various 356s also looked really good. I don't know if the quad-cam 356 that they took in ever appeared in their showroom or if they already had a buyer for it. It belonged to one of my cycling mates and they were very keen to buy it off him.

Great selection of classics and moderns, very well worth a look for anyone passing.

did they charge you to fix the geo ? did you ask why it was out in the 1st place on such a new car :), what was the total bill for really is a 1st service oil change and check over circa £200 worth.

but your quote was £580, was that the end bill ?

Hello Mr D.

The video informed me that the front toe was out on the passenger side and that the rear camber was out on the other side. The video did not give detail of the extent but because the tyres are quite well worn, particularly on the outside of that front one, sensibly the technician suggested that the correction be made at the same time as new tyres are fitted.

The technician called it a free 4 wheel alignment check and it was included in the final bill for £580.

Not sure what to do next, will swap the tyres and probably book it in at track Torque for the geo. I'll not stray far from standard as I use the car mainly on the road and I wouldn't mind an alternative tyre but i guess that there is still little or no N rated alternative in something like a MPSS.

I'll do some research and see what TT say about the wear etc.

You can drive my car, you will want a geo change if you do :)

transformaction and even tyre wear after 5.5k miles

PS4s would be the only option imo for a car like this. I would not worry about N spec unless you have a really poor OPC.
