Guards red 944 Turbo.......is this where prices are now?

I would love a 944 Turbo at some stage and this car is exactly how I would like it to look. As a fan I actually don't think it's too much money as long as its very nice. Not sure what other people would think though. Would prefer genuine cup 1s at that price though as they look like reps.

I agree it is a very nice looking car and without doubt the sort of price level we should be seeing good quality 944 Turbos for sale at.

I suspect that's where prices are for really low mileage perfect turbos. For those that aren't perfect and low mileage i'd think it's a fair bit less. With 944s there's always the question of how much work needs to be done to it. Last year we had Hairyarse taking ages to sell his turbo for a huge amount less than that. That car looked pretty good and i imagine whoever bought it got a super deal. We've also seen another turbo, purchased by Soli that turned out to have quite a number of problems. At the price point of this car other options would be a good 996 or a Gen 2 Cayman or a really perfect 968 CS. All of which are pretty darn good cars. A 997 isn't much more money. These are all compelling options for that sort of money. So while collectors might be after a perfect turbo there's a more basic problem for the prices of the not quite perfect ones. Pretty much everyone who really wants a 944 turbo has probably already gone out and bought one. After all they're not, in the grand scheme of things, very expensive. If everyone who wants one has one already then where can prices really go?
 
Same background for the pictures and spiel for Buchannan motors, i would have a tenner that they are one and the same ! Car looks nice and they are Cup 1 reps.

I get your point regarding a 996 or a Cayman but there are reliability issues that can be catastrophic on 996 engines which also affect the Boxster and Cayman. This could end up costing you £10k or scrapping the car which is happening frequently to all but the best condition models. You won't get a Cayman Gen 2 with lowish miles below £15k and like the 996 they are still depreciating. Regarding the 968CS a perfect example with less than 70k miles is now a £20k+ car (if you can find one for sale) and one I looked at was nearer £26k and was sold in a week!! It comes down to whether you want a modern Porsche or a 'potential' Classic Porsche for your £15-20k. The standard 996 and Cayman are mass produced cars that will hit a bottom at some point, but will never be Classics (except possibly the Special Edition models). Is a low mileage mint Porsche 944 worth £15k? Not sure, but equivalent MK2 Escort RS2000's are £25-30k and 964's are now climbing over £30k. Are they worth twice as much? I don't think so but the market decides values so time will tell [:)]

Totally agree that time and the market will tell. I must confess that I don't believe that enormous numbers of 964s are trading at £30k. I think that a few of the very good ones sold for a lot of money and everyone assumes that the 90% ones are also worth a lot of money. As an example there was a 911SC for sale last year in the for sale section of this forum. It was ~15k and clearly didn't sell because this year it's appeared again for sale only this time for £25k. If nobody was willing to pay 15k last year will anyone pay 25k this year. Probably not. I think much of the run up in prices is hype based on a few very good cars selling for a lot of money. I also believe that the 996 engine issues are overstated and are the prices reflect the risk. Hard to tell what the proportion of problem cars is, but around 5% probably wouldn't be too far off. I've seen cars with Hartech rebuilds advertised at under 17k and I think they'd be a very safe bet. But that's a whole different argument/discussion! Like you say it depends what someone is after. Having said all that I do think that a low mileage mint 944 turbo at £15k is a lot of car for the money. Can't think of a new car I'd rather have that didn't cost three times as much - and my choice there would be a new Boxster.

The guy with a 'Wanted 944 Turbo' ad on the TIPEC forum hasn't got one. The guy who paid over the asking price for the Turbo S we all discussed last week didn't have one. I haven't got one but would still buy one, I wouldn't buy a 996 as they are unreliable, run of the mill mass produced cars. We have this discussion on a regular basis, those that agree that we own an appreciating asset, although at the lower end of the Porsche spectrum, and those that refuse to believe that we are driving nothing more than scrappers. As for a 968CS at sensible money, I'm afraid that boat sailed quite a while ago...

Think I saw the throttle shop getting a mention in a current Pistonheads thread, not the kindest of words, something about them manipulating the market pretending they've sold other cars at similarly high prices. Couldn't see shark on the thread, maybe he's on holiday
 
I agree that a £15k turbo is entirely reasonable for a great example. However, at that price point, I'd expect; No rust, great paint & interior sill and underside photos A history of clutch change Fresh suspension Original or upgrades OE rims Mild modification to maximise modern day potential (chips, dpw etc) Brakes refreshed (I mean calipers free of plate lift rather than new pads) Low ish miles Great SH Engine mounts done Fresh belts & water pump Brake & fuel lines either replaced or inspected Rear main bushes done Great sports interior Car colour unimportant if so many boxes are ticked. And no, I wouldn't otherwise expect the car to then be perfect. Regarding the advert above. Car looks great but I'd want much more detail on the car (see above) before deciding if it was a £15k car in my eyes.

Good point. However, for me, I consider A/C to be non contributory for my needs in Scotland. I need the heater to work though!

Good point. However, for me, I consider A/C to be non contributory for my needs in Scotland. I need the heater to work though!
.... A/C stops it getting steamed up in the winter [:D]
