I've told my 5 year-old that a man called Vitesse has something to tell her ... (I've brain-washed my children so much they love anything P-car related - the last gift from my 5 year old was this months 911 & PW mag because it had a car like mine on the front [][][])

After 2 MGB GT's,eventually with the rear seat squab removed as our son's head approached the headling,we bought our 1st Porsche- a 924 Lux because the kids could fit in the back-that was back in'81/2-so Porsches have been our family since then-Nick has had 3 so far-Emma has had an MG TF but not got into Porsches yet-she did however impress her future husband(now her husband)by having Evo magazine on the top of her other mags when he 1st visited her home in Wetherall so you are doing right by starting early. Incidentally,I've had starting reliability problems with the e-bay car these last 3 weeks-1day it started OK when my wife used it(it's got petrol in it,hers hadn't)-next day I couldn't start it & so on.It always seemed to need the pump running 20secs before starting-so this weekend checked pump throughput-over 1 litre in 30 secs so OK to spec-no gauge to check pressure-but still wouldn't start-had previously checked for battery volts at coil & injectors-all Ok. I have never yet had to resort to the old adage-"swop the DME relay" but this seemed a good idea & bingo-started straight away.Funny thing is -my spare was a 944--serial no-the fitted one was a 993 serial no-hopefully the problem has gone away. Colin (aka VITESSE)
Going back on Sat morning to do the combustion leak test. If all goes well I'll be driving it home! I'll be compiling a quick check of common faults to take with me - when I last looked I got carried away and didn't check half the things I meant to. If anyone has a link to something then I would be grateful. Last chance for anyone with a good 924s in GP White to get my money first []
Block test went well - drove it back & its now on the drive. Situation report: Sunroof leaks - going to give the drain holes a clean now, Eng temp does look high until fan kicks in - I might give the radiator a good clean Heater is still hot - but not a great issue Radio is Kaput - I'll try and fix it because I like the retro look. Drives really well - although seat position feels high. Loving the GP white! Will post a pciture when I've properly cleaned it. Cheers for help everyone

Congratulations on your purchase Sunroof - if the poking down the drainage holes fails, then its Ă‚ÂŁ60 for a new outer seal. My temp gauge displays really low before the fans kick in. Haven't got round to measuring the actual water temps yet. Heater being hot - have a look at the back of the head at the heater control valve. Although my control valve is new the outer cable slips and allows hot water into the heater. Currently I am manually pushing the valve shut rather than using the dash control!! Seats probably have lifter blocks under the seat sliders. Dead easy to pop the seats out and remove the lifter blocks. Enjoy []
Update on the jobs to do (in order of tackling): > Engine mounts - ordered and soon to be delivered - next project <HIGH> > Has a flat spot when you press the throttle - suspect ISV needs a clean - looks a PITA to do. LONG WAY OFF TO BEING FIXED > Front struts were an advisory <LOW> Seems OK to me. > Sills <LOW PRIORITY> > Brake pipes appeared on advisory - seem OK to me <LOW /MED> > Gearbox whine - sounds better now that exhaust is replaced. FIXED STUFF > Drivers seat shims removed - I can't get my legs under the wheel now! > Steering wheel replaced with a better one (with better stitching and 'fixed' centre pad) > Exhaust rattles a little <Fixed> - got it second hand, but sounds a bit too sporty for my likinh ) > OE radio was OK. Problem traced to the sunroof / radio relay. Have bridged it our for time being. > Passenger window doesn't go up from drivers side <FIXED - cleaned contacts within switch & reassembled> > Heater is permanently on hot <FIXED - VACUUM ADVANCE HAD BECOME DISCONNECTED> > Engine Temperature much better after a good soak with gunk, followed by a blast with the compressor. > High water consumption - fixed by current keeper. Hasn't used anything in about 250 miles of use. We also did a block test without any adverse results. <DONE> > Recently car has had moisture inside <MED>- seems to be sunroof. Took seal off and it looks OK, so cleaned and refitted. Fingers crossed. Might also add a thin bead of non-drying bedding sealant into the groove. > Rear screen partially works - only one of the lines doesn't work! <V.LOW PRIORITY> I promised myself I wouldn't go all obsessive with this as its a daily driver ... but where is the fun in that []

You've made a good choice with the S as a daily driver, mine's a daily driver for 6 months of the year and i can't fault it. I sometimes do close to 300 miles a day going to fell races in the lakes and stuff, german engineering. Couple of pearls of wisdom based on my ownership experience: Gearbox oil- get some good fresh stuff in it, i use Castrol fully synth, my 'box whines but has never shown signs of blowing up. Fuel lines- most recent MOT notified me that all my steel lines are rusty and leaking. It's going to be an expensive job to get them changed so you could grease yours up unless they're already too far gone. Sunroof- after nearly 4 yrs of effort mine still leaks dispite me changing the outer seal. I saw a tip off somewhere on t'internet about putting a continuous strip of sticky back neoprene in the gutter just to help a bit, the author said it worked.ORIGINAL: C2dweller Update on the jobs to do (in order of tackling): > OE radio OK, But +12V supply is NOK - <UPDATE - looks like the roof/radio relay> > Exhaust rattles a little and has been welded <MED> - looking for second hand one, watching a few on ebay. Ă‚ÂŁ200 from favourite exhaust centre. > Front struts were an advisory <LOW> Seems OK to me. > Sills <LOW PRIORITY> > Brake pipes appeared on advisory - seem OK to me <LOW /MED> NEW STUFF > Engine mounts - I can feel movement back through clutch / gear stick <HIGH> > I'm sure the gearbox sounds worse after a long drive home. Replaced the oil with castrol SMX-S after seeing a bit of dampness - still the same <MED> - Some of the wining might be a noise from the alternator. Related to engine speed only. FIXED STUFF > Passenger window doesn't go up from drivers side <FIXED - cleaned contacts within switch & reassembled> > Heater is permanently on hot <FIXED - VACUUM ADVANCE HAD BECOME DISCONNECTED> > Engine Temperature much better after a good soak with gunk, followed by a blast with the compressor. > High water consumption - fixed by current keeper. I agree, I'm on my second S. Got a 1989 which has very few faults. Perfect dash, good interior, no leaks and everything works (thanks to Simon at Kirkman Motors!!). Use it for 6 months of year driving to Luxembourg for winter lay off and back to UK for summer motoring. A comfortable long distance car as well as practical for everyday use and most important it's fun!! Really economical and on the cheap stuff!! (Got a driver's manual and service book from my first one, if anyone needs one.)
After a good 100mile round trip I thought it deserved a bit of an engine-tune ... checking / cleaning various parts. Needless to say, I broke the rotor arm on Saturday trying to remove it - so its currently languishing at home waiting for a spare part [] Also the whining I attribute to the alternator - after some research - could be from the cambelt. I'm going to go back to the people that fitted it and ask them to check tension. Also 32mpg average on first tank. Is this about right?
At 55 hyper-miling miles per hour in lane 1 of the M5 it probably is Lee!ORIGINAL: C2dweller Also 32mpg average on first tank. Is this about right?

Nothing wrong with 32mpg, but as its been said once you realise how much you can chuck a 924 about you'll probably never get that many again lol Looks great

Chances are the noise isn't from the cam belt but the balance belts they very often get put on too tight
Cheers Paul - Donor car has a nicely aligned bumper - irons to be moved across. Latest fun is the rough idle problem. Have swapped over the AFM / ignition leads - no joy. Hoping it will be the temp sensor. What a pig it is to remove the connector! After some swearing I've come back inside and will leave for another night. I couldn't budge the plastic clip.
