Horizontal fan on a 911? LOLA PORSCHE

bones

New member
Oh come on! Don't tantalise us with tasty info like that and not post pics..........pics now!!!!!!![] PS what about giving us an engine no. too? [;)]

I have just bought a 3200 911 engine with webers and a horizontal fan on top!
This engine will go in my Lola hillclimb car.

On the main bearing housing is neatly cast 'Rush'.

Any ideas of the origin etc of this unit?

Secondly, it has a home-made aluminium shroud to guide the cooling air from the fan's base. I want to remake this in fibre glass, but does anyone know how to get the Posrche competition parts look to such fibre glass as used on the RSR's for the engine shrouds etc?
It is a light biscuit in colour and nearly see-through.

There are all sorts of moonshine theories about soaking clear fiberglass parts in exotic substances to get the aged look. The only authentic and reliable way is to use it as it's the heat that yellows it. Also want to see pics of horizontal fan. Very exotic as this was used on all the race engines. Ian.

OK: Time to come clean with you lot. For my Lola I have decided to put a 3200cc 911 engine and 'reversed' 915 in it! Talk about keeping the faith? I have the ex Terry Davidson Nomad drivetrain which I picked up today. This engine was built by Crispin Manners of all people and is really nice, and has a horizontal fan on it with belt drive and then a bevel gear ( I presume) to a normal 911 fan. Looks sexy. Especially with webers either side of it. It is not a works unit and it is not a Heath robinson bit of botching either,; looks very neat. Pics to follow! I'm racing at a very special meeting at Shelsley Walsh this weekend so will be pre-occupied with my Bitza (what a car). This lot will be a very tight fit in the petite Lola, but I hope to 'extend'my 911 thread for this car as it has now the Right Engine. Hope the Moderators will allow it. So: 250 bhp and 230 lbft torque in 550Kg. = 450 bhp/tonne Should go well? Bit of a mini 908 Porsche? Good Game.

Please do! I've been reading all your posts with huge interest [8D]

Hoping to get a clear day this bank hols in the garage, mate the box to the flatfan 3.2 and hoist it over the Lola's rear end. I've measured a fair bit before spending the money, so I hope it is about right. I have a plan to fit it and how to mount it using all (I hope) of the 911 hardware but the box could be a bit tricky. I also have a fresh pack of real hacksaw blades.... This is the plan, the model, the Dream. [link=http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/pic.php?imagenum=9&carnum=815]

[/link] Thanks for the words; I think I might need a few words of encouragement over the next few months....

So, a bit like the 935, but presumably without the 700bhp! Power to your elbow, dear boy, cant wait to see the finished beast. JohnC 993turbo

I hope some of you are reading this! Engine went into my Lola today. Big gulp as I made the first cut, but my hotrodding days flooded back and bits of Lola tube went everywhere. After some measurements, the stainless flyweight headers that came with the engine are just too big to squeeze the engine in and get it down LOW in this shallow chassis. Looks like some new ones fron Patrick Motorsport in the USA will be needed, though I think some 911 ones will now fit... Anyone got a pair or one scrap 2.4 exhaust manifold they don't want so I can try it for size (will return it if you wish!) Anyway, here it is: [8D]

Yes, headers are for sale. No idea of the source, but sure are light stainless units. I need some 911 ones for 2 reasons 1 They are designed to be very close to the underside of the engine so allow me to get this engine as low as possible to the lower frame that Lola welded in. 2 The outlets will point forwards which allow much greater freedom to mount silencers either side of the engine (alongside the rocker covers) so keeping weight mid-ships and not overhanging. I would be very happy to swop these headers for some 911 headers (SSI style), otherwise about £250 to help off-set the 911 header cost. (OBX from the States probably). Hoping to finish the engine installation by end of Sept. Hope there is an Autojumble soon!

Maybe you could post some pics and measure the diameters of the tubes? The OBX seem great VFM on a N/A car, not sure I'd put them on a turbo though..

Headers gone I'm afraid. I'm trying to get the dimension of the OBX headers from the gasket face on the flange to the dunderside of the lowest tube. To get the engine low in the Lola, the 911 stock headers will fit a treat, but I need to know if the OBX (or other types) have the same depth. OBX in the States won't answer the emails......irritating. Graham.

I can certainly find out how low the turbo OBX's hang, but I don't know of anyone who has a N/A set. It would be dissapointing if there was a difference between the two...

That would be very good if you can Nathan. The 911 stock system 'hangs' level with the crankcase oil drain plug on the 3.2. To fit my Lola the system I buy must be the same. I would think the Turbo would be the same as the car has the same ground clearance as the N/A type 3.2? Thankyou for the help. Graham.

Graham - I've had a couple of sets of OBX headers but don't use them any more so so can't measure them for you. However, I'm fairly certain that the distance between the head-mating flanges & the lowest point is the same as the std heat exchangers. This picture might help:

Graham. I recently cut open a set of heat exchanges off a 2.4 engine. I've just taken some pictures and measured them. The measurement between the mounting face and the lowest point of the pipes in 5 inches. I am guessing on a 3.2 you might want slightly larger bore pipes so will have to add a little on to the 5 inches.

The weight difference is 6.9 Kg with the sheet metalwork and 4.7 Kg without Ian.

I am speachless! That lot is just so useful to me, and I thank you all! Those are the headers on Ebay (193 + post from Warrington) I think are right if they are the 5'' depth. 5'' = 197mm so are the right size. I will double check this afternoon and get back. I may well hedge my bets and get the 'old one' first and if OK go for the fancy OBX as the megaphone flange position is better for me. Fantastic! Graham. ps: what ID for a 3.2 on webbers stock cams? I have 2.7 Carrera on my 3.2 on injection which has tons of low/mid torque as opposed to power at the top.
