Horizontal fan on a 911? LOLA PORSCHE

"ps: what ID for a 3.2 on webbers stock cams? " The reason that I don't use OBX headers any more is that they only offer one size (I.D) which is too large for smaller displacement 911 engines (I'm using a 2.5 litre short-stroke twin-plug) but should be OK for your 3.2.

Thanks for that. I do wonder if the 2.7 headers/twin pipe muffler I have on my 911/3.2 is restricting it a bit...? Someone thinks I might get away with megaphones on this car! Yet more tube trimming today on the chassis. The 5'' depth of the stock headers is perfect for the installation, checked it 3000 times today. Wish I could be sure the OBX's were exactly the same! I'll send another email I think. Graham.

Really interesting thread, and here is today's silly question. With the engine and gearbox reversed in direction to the 911 (i.e. mid engined), what will stop you having one forward and five reverse gears ? Ian

The car the drivetrain came out of was a Sports 2 seater full race Nomad. It had the engine mid-ships and went like stink! The 915 was designed to be '911' and '916' You reverse the side of the crown wheel and pinion, so for the given direction the engine rotates, the box rotates in reverse, so you get 5 forward and one back again. On the 916 the gear shift is on the underside of the box, on the 911 it is at the far end. In this Lola (and the Nomad) the shifter is on the right of the driver, so this box has a detailed shift mechanism to get all that right and as a 911 H pattern! I believe Crispin Manners did that bit, and he did a great job of it too. You have to hand it to Porsche for forward thinking! Sprinting the 911 at the dreaded Curborough Sat and I hope to be tacking some new tubes to the Lola Sunday. This will be FUN. [;)] 'Now; measure 3 times cut once, right?' [>:]

Now that's clever...[8D]

Shouldn't think they'd be a problem, Graham. We ran SSI's and a similar silencer to yours on our mechanically injected 3.2 until the noise police caught up with us! If you go much bigger, you lose the low down torque. I've just measured the H & S headers we have now, and they're 42mm external for the primaries, and 58mm ext for the secondaries. I wouldn't go any bigger than Terry was running, or you risk losing that torque. On the gearbox - Crispin is uniquely qualified, since he has a 916 box to refer to.......... Cheers![8D] JW

Thanks for that, my emails are not answered. Spent the day on the Lola-Porsche getting the chassis back straight and around the engine and box. Lots of hacksawing of tube and smashed 2 of my fingers...but some progress:

By no means finished, but I might be able to use 911 engine mounts for the cross beam (plastic semi-solid type as I have on my Bitza) Mounting the box to the chassis is a bit harder, but I think I can mount the lower suspension plate easy to the chassis . The construction means I can remove the box at the track without removing the suspension, and I can remove the engine and box in one unit, again leaving the suspension in place. Very Useful. My new MIG welder is not much to wrtite home about, so will tack everything and then get a mobile welder type to spend a day running all the welds around the tubes. They will be neat and strong then. I'll close all the tube ends off with steel sheet and probably gas weld them on. I'm a bit worried about the angle the drive shafts are at, so need to check the Google side of life again for more info. The new rear uprights will be self made using Sierra hubs, discs and CV's. I can copy the geometry of the fab magnesium F2 uprights you can see in the pics. Pity I can't use them. So, need to splice Porsche CV's to Sierra CV's..... The project gets deeper and deeeeper [8|] Hope you are not too bored yet!

Stu P posted today about the headers for you. The 930/964t headers from OBX measure 5 1/2" thats 5.5" the way you measured your ones. He is also a PCGB member. Oh, another chap from the USA measures his at 6.5" [&:] So your drive shafts won't be straight/level under acceleration then? They didn't worry about that on the lwb 911 or the 930 [:D]

Thanks for the info Nathan: That 1/2'' is critical. Decision time! Jonathan: dead right, spoken to him already, and no probs. I know the 911 shafts are all over the place, but what is the max a CV can tolerate reliably? At a guess the Lola's are 5 degs 'out' which I guess isn't too bad. Certainly seen a lot lot worse on a hillclimb Ralt. Off to Stockholm tomorrow for 3 days, chance for my 'hacksawn' fingers to heal a touch. [:(] and to ponder the headers.[8|]

I'm still cutting and welding tubes. seems never ending. Tackling the rear lower suspension arms today, and things are looking good. I don't think I dreamt it, but some one said (in Crewe) that they had some 911 headers for sale with rusty tinware for £50. Can't find the post, but if you are reading this please get in touch. Would like to buy them! I need some drive shafts too. Anyone with some for an aluminium 915 about 1980's? Strikes me I need to get almost all the bits I need now to pull this all together! Graham.

Hi Graham, That was me with the old headers! I edited my original post as it looked like you were OK for your measurements and didn't want to cover your thread in sales pitch [:D] I'll send you an email. regards Gary

No probs Gary, and thanks for the thought. Have emailed you back. Will ring tonight, and hope I catch you in. Graham. Just bought yet more steel tube, this time not from Metal Supermarket, but still think the cost is the same, ie bloody expensive. Driveshafts next and the rear upright parts. I hope to get these from the kit car show in Staffs this saturday unless we get washed away.

I had an entertaining week-end in the company of Terry and Sally Davison at a very wet Wiscombe Park. He says he has a pair of hillclimb silencers that he used on the Nomad hiding somewhere in his garage. You may need to attend the Welsh Christmas dinner (along with several other of us foreigners!) armed with a book full of photos............ Cheers [8D] JW

Interesting! Travelling to such far flung parts is a little nerve wracking though. My plan was to use stainless Cherry Bombs mated to the 911 manifolds and a 180 deg U bend between them. Made some rear suspension parts yesterday, so hope a little welding this week will see the lower rear chassis completed, the lower rear wishbones triangulated and then I can fathom out how to get hold of the gearbox. I can see why Crispin did what he did now! Getting tricky in the back end of this car....[;)]

You wouldn't have to go too far for the Welsh bash - it's at the Howells' place and will be really good fun! We are going. Laura

The Lola Porsche is getting a bit perplexing! Talk about endless 'fun' with tubes of all shapes, sizes and complexity. Add to that a new MIG welder that can't tack weld let alone weld fresh steel. However, there has been some progress in the frame, but the real bug is the exhaust system.(closely followed by the starter motor of all things) I bought the 2.4 early headers, stripped the rusty dog-eared shrouds off them (surprisingly difficult for something so rusty) and they will not fit into the chassis! They are for sale! [&:] I can see the exhaust being a custom fabrication in the end. [] One shot will be to cut-n-carve the stainless racing system that came with the engine, the other is to risk £200 and buy the OBX ones and cross my fingers. The stock headers are too wide and extend too far back by the gearbox. When things look a bit more impressive I will post some pics, but it is shaping up. Things will speed-up now the season of hillclimbing the 911 has finished. I have only 6 months to get this all together for the off in late March 2009. [:(] Graham. [;)]
