I used to race a FF2000 in the 1980s - and that picture brings back great memories of a really heavy engine that didn't give a lot of grunt. I expect that the flat six is lighter than the old fordie..........

Kevin: That looks great, pure sports 2000. Haven't seen one with the engine brace (to the rear cross member) before. As Alex says, the Pinto is a good reliable engine, but on the hills you need instant grunt and skips of torque. When I looked into the Burton catalogue on Pintos (engine mods are free on the hills) to squeeze 200 bhp/180 lbft ish from one costs a lot of dosh. The 911 3.2 has 250 bhp/220 lbft for 1/2 the cost. Does anyone know the weight of a 3.2 v a Pinto? I would dearly like to know. My Lola had an FT2000 Hewland box and a turbo Cossie in it when I first saw the car, and it looked just Fab, but that (£5K) box is rated @ 220 lbft torque max with hillclimb slicks. The rear tyres on this car are 14'' wide...each. I trust the Porsche box more than the Hewland even though it weighs in heavier. Above all I want reliability and 400 bhp/ton (minimum). I think the Lola when finished will be about 600Kg and the engine 250 bhp = 416 bhp/tonne. Should sound good too, even with my unequal-by-a-mile headers![8D] Excellent chat, thanks for 'showing-up'. To be honest I need a bit of encouragement at the moment![:(] Graham.

Take a look at this car on [link=http://www.race-cars.com]www.race-cars.com[/link] Great web site in the USA. You should see the 911's sold/for sale![8D] Click on this pic for full details! Only found this works car 2 days ago. [link=http://www.race-cars.com/carsold/porsche/1055354153/1055354153pp.htm]

Come on Graham, get your a**e in gear, it'll be Easter before you know it![8D] Will that do? [8|] Cheers! Jonathan

Graham, Really enjoying your thread. Living vicariously through it! Used to hillclimb a Frogeye. David

Mr Williamson! You are right!! I can't hacksaw and file any bloody faster. This will truely be a 'hand-built' motorcar thingy. [&:] Actually got my MIG welder to weld tonight. Bought some more gas that seems to work. This weekends plan is to get the engine sitting on it's front crossmember and then do the pesky gear linkage. 4 UJ's I recon. Then the gear box mounts with anti vibration mounts no less. If I do that then things are doing ok. Then the rear uprights in good old steel, none of this Chapman magnesium stuff. Last night I really really wondered if I have done the right thing. Perhaps the Hewland and the twin webers Pinto should have been the route, keep it all delicate and balanced. Feeling a bit more normal now. A Bitza Lola Porsche sounds nearly good! March is ages away yet, right? Graham. There is no better motorsport than hillclimbing, be it a Frog Eye or a Bitza 911 or some tub of ally sheet and a butchered rear frame. I wonder if this machine and pilot will be quicker than Mr Williamson?

Alex, Yes I've been told to pack some decent reading material for the straights. The historic class of S2000 just seemed the right route to return to racing. Plan is a couple of seasons of this, (they even have a Derek Bell trophy for drivers over 50) then cash permitting get something intersting for proper historic sports car racing. Saw a really nice Elva Porsche at the Revival but unfortunately the last one went for $350k!! Graham, The rear crossmember mod is apparently common as the Lola original was prone to twisting. Regards Kevin

Definitely ought to be with 250bhp and 600kg....................... That's a bit more pressure then, young Loakes! [:-] Cheers! [;)] JW

Ha! Had a good afternoon today in the Garage. The right hand front engine mount is welded in the chassis. This mounts the 911 'biscuit' bit also braces the new chassis to the Lola bulkhead. Started the left one and got all excited because my new welder is actually working now. Did all the work only to see I had fabricated it as another right hand...I'm a pratt. So: did another one (at least my welding is getting better) and that is now ready to go in. Looking good to mount the engine, the gear linkage and the gearbox this weekend. Got to go to Loton Park (hillclimb venue) to prep it for winter, so that will slow me down a touch, but very good today. I'm re-motivated![;)] Pics on sunday of my progress. Need to buy a Carcoon for the 911 Bitza to sleep outside for the winter to give the space I need to spead it all out in the garage. Who sells them cheap?

Busy weekend, delayed a bit as I had to go out with the wife! Engine actually sat on its front mounts for the first time today, and the gear linkage off the Lola is almost a perfect fit. Didn't expect that. Managed to re-use some 1978 Lola parts which is nice. This meant tweeking the bespoke custom built exhaust (again) but that might pay off later. Welder still working which is something else I didn't expect....[8|] Gear box mounts and rear suspension cross member are next which will be a bit tricky. Then time for CV's on the drive shafts (I have some 108mm CV flanges in the tool box strangely) which will give a little extra room. It is getting very busy and tight down there. Satisfying in all.[;)]

Getting fed-up trying to master (remember) doing pics on here!

How did I do that?[] Bit blurred, sorry, but the only mod to the Lola part is the length of the tube beween the 'red' UJ joints to get to the shifter shaft Crispin Manners engineered so long ago. The car should then actually change gear.

I've been a busy bee over the last week or so, but just back from a short break with the wife from the middle of Scotland, my first time to Scotland! I've traveled the world over the years but never to the North. Impressive and very very relaxing. Time to ponder and to act! Got my grotty new welder going again today, even pulled some real welds! The engine now sits under its own weight without the hoist. The 2 rear gearbox mounts I've taken off the 4 gearbox/engine studs and they look quite good. I've used poly bushes to match the fronts so vibration should be under control. The rear mounts took some sorting, I even nearly used the mounting Terry used on his build, but I'm ok with my own designs. The gear linkage is all together, just needs a bit of welding/bolting now, but i want to get the car down on the ground and out of the messy garage this weekend to see what I've got. I have to say a 3 day break from it all has worked wonders, and it actually looks like a racing car! Need to design the rear up rights this weekend (and do my tax return...), both rather similar, simple but tedious. It is such a shame I cannot think of a way to mount the rear calipers off the box so I could retain the beautiful mag alloy March Formula 2 uprights and drive shafts, just so very light and made so efficiently Hope these pics look good!

Got the Lola down on the ground this morning and out onto the drive. Here is one of the pics taken. I have to say I'm chuffed how low the engine sits and it actually looks like a hillclimb car! Hope you agree.

Looks great :) How about this for a radical idea for inboard caliper mounting... Make a spacer plate that locates between the two halves of the gearbox, machine each flange on the box appropriately to maintain the shaft locations. Hang the callipers from this spacer plate together with additional bracing back to the case as I doubt you'd get the spacer thick enough without destroying the case. Bracing the RHS would be straightforward onto the diff housing fixings, the LHS would take some more thought. Chucking out those uprights would be a crime.

The engine in a former life. Hope it comes out ok. I had fantastic racing all over Europe with Super Sports Cup. Looking forward to seeing your Lola performing. Terry
