Ignition has me stumped

Thats the right one Geoff, been a couple kecking around, might buy another one just in case if another comes up on ebay

I've been on PET and the control unit for the 924 is officially called the switching unit. So we are all right and all wrong at the same time. Will I sleep undisturbed until about 10:30 in the morning? You betcha![:)]

Bit embarrassed guys, the TIU arrived this morning, fitted everything up, forgot which way the leads go on the cap [] so all it did was splutter and backfire, but hey thats a start!!!
Then the battery went flat!! Forgot to sodding charge it after my last attempt to get it running, so now I'm waiting for either the missus to get back or the battery to charge before I can try again.
In the meantime what is correct order to plumb in the leads at the cap?? [&:]

It works, the old thing is now running again, wow what a marathon task this has been!!

Was the TIU all along, but at least now I have completely overhauled ignition system, thank you to everyone who has posted with help and tips over the past week and a bit. I set the timing etc. then connected the old TIU up just to confirm it was the root of the problem and it was.
Soon as I get paid you can expect PCGB to have a new member, you guys have been great.

Once again thanks for all your comments and guidance.

Ignore us, there has been a bit of a misunderstanding here, but I hope I have now put matter right as far as possible.

I had a suspicion that the silver box gadget was on the blink but the failure you had was even worse than mine. I just goes to show that just because you have a spark you can't eliminate it. I must admit that mine had me completely stumped. You were lucky to get your hands on one for £30; because of their high retail value and importance, word has got around that they are worth their weight in gold. it obviously hasn't filtered down to ebay yet. I had one in reserve if you couldn't get one anywhere else. It is stored in a sealed container, but I paid £70 from lodge sports and I would want the same amount to sell it. The irony is that I don't run normally aspirated 924's any more so I don't have a use for one but I am not going to give it away. I hope the misunderstanding hasn't put you off joining the club.

Happen in real life as well, and it's always harder to express yourself online, been a member of a guitar collectors forum for knocking on 6 years, like here its concerned with just one mark, in that case Kramer guitars, and misunderstanding happen every now and again, its human nature at its best. Become very philosophical to it over the years as you can tell, happened to me recently somewhere, PMed the guy my phone number, never received a phone call, and nothing more was said [;)]

And no won't stop me, seems there are a few things organised in my area which is good as its quite remote up here for anything classic related never mind Porsche!!

And thers a chance I could be upgrading soon as well, may well have a 924S project within the week!!!

If you go with the 924S try to get a late 87 or 88 ( though beggars can't be choosers) as at some time in 87, IIRC, the engines of the 944 and 924S were harmonised, the 944 losing 3 bhp and the 924S gaining 10bhp. I'm still sticking with my 177 bhp turbo, especially as it is getting a rebuild and cam, with which I hope to crack the 200 bhp barrier. Now that will be quick. Don't worry about the brakes, they are the same as the 928 up to 1979 and if they will stop the shark they wont break sweat in any kind of 924.

Its an 88, so it should have all the goodies and the 160bhp engine, goign to have a look tomorrow so fingers crossed, its an auto again, but so is my n/a, and for city driving you can't beat them IMO

Not a bad idea, I know they don't go very often, but it's certainly worth checking it before buying a whole batch of new ignition parts!!

Still not had chance to go and see the S I've bought, but will post some pics once I get it home [;)]

Just to clear up a misnomer, according to the 924 technical manual the tiny little peice of plastic in the distributor, on the outside of the air-gap is referred to as a hall sender, but it is nothing like the Golf's, which, if IIRC from the Haynes manual, has three exit wires compared to the 924's single conductor.
