Is this a bargain??

Wiling away a spare hour or two this afternoon I happened across a car which purports to be a 964RS in delectable monkey bum red for sale at S G Autopoint in Windsor.

The web link is here (http://tinyurl.com/yvgw75). I am not specifically interested in buying the car but I thought it worth a heads up on the forum for anyone who's looking. By recent standards it seems a good price but I have no idea of it's provenance or condition.

Regards

Dave

Well, the price does look interesting, but the "electric windows, mirrors and power steering" would have me questioning it ! Could very well be a lazy dealer who has just assumed a Porsche would have all of the above wihout checking, and the fact that it is the correct year, lhd and appears to have the right seats would lend some credibility to it being a genuine car.

Anyone bored enough to go and have a look ?????????

Jamie

It was briefly on Pistonheads for sale a few weeks ago and then disappeared after a few hours. I seem to recall the mileage being quoted was quite high (I think it was 100k or thereabouts but can't be sure) which might go some way to explaining the lower price.

YES I SAW IT ON PISTONHEADS FOR A DAY OR SO , PHOTOS LOOKED LIKE PAINT WAS AS FLAT AS A PANCAKE, NO SUCH THING AS A CHEAP PORSCHE.....

I live in Windsor and did go and take a look the other day. It is a genuine RS but it has done 116000 (miles IIRC ) the paintwork isnt too bad and the interior is OK but the carpets will need replacing. Does not have original RS brake disks. The car is generally untidy and not sure how it would run or how much to bring it back to life. Happy to go and check and take more pics or detail if anyone is interested in the car.

Probably a bit anal of me to have found this but this car was used in an article comparing 73 RS, 964 RS and 993 RS in Classic & Sportscar November 2001. Or at least the car used has the same reg. See p 136. Was owned by a chap called Willie Green at the time reading the credits.[:)]

it would make a good cheap track day car...............boom .....boom

Saw a yellow RS in northways with a blown engine yesterday........anyone round here..... number plate STR???

yes that Willie Green. I have that article too. Willie used to organise his own track days/evenings at donnington and great value they were too. With a nice spread laid on afterwards too.

ORIGINAL: TISPKJ

Guys could this be a comfort model ?

It's LHD, has got the fixed back recaro pole positions in it and a cage of some sort - I haven't seen the car just what you can see in a blown up picture.

Most likely it is a standard RS/L with a few modifications that betray its time on the track.....

cheers,

ben.

Car seems a reasonble buy to me if it's a matching number high miles RS. Car will want work obviously but the price reflects this. History quite interesting if it has Willies name in the log book/ history.

Well, I'm no expert but it looked like the car needed a lot of work.
An RS owner was also there checking it out and helpfully gave me a few pointers.

Bad Points:
- It had two new rear wings and the rear wheels weren't magnesium. It obviously hit something hard tail first.
- There were various patches of surface rust on the floors - under spare wheel & in footwells.
- The seats weren't original and were far too tightly padded to sit in (& I'm skinny)
- Headlights cracked
- Cheap rear tyres (Federal) vs. Pirelli Corsa's on the front.
- Worn rear carpets
- strange marks in the paint on the roof
- Nasty momo corse leather steering wheel & red anodised boss
- a lot of exposed wiring hanging into passenger footwell
- 198,000kms on the clock
- Clutch had no meat on it (according to the RS owner who was seriously looking)
- Front brakes not original (upgraded to floating hub arrangements)
- Front bumper intake was bent

Good points:
- Was definitely an original RS.
- Engine bay looked clean and tidy
- Paint was generally good
- No electric windows (as stated in the ad)
- Willie Green a former keeper (actually is this a good thing?)

All in all it will probably make somebody a great track car but the amount of work scared me off.

I took lots of pics which I should be able to post tomorrow.

My seach for an "affordable" RS continues....

So the above sounds like why its so cheap - probably at least 10k to make it really good and you still don't know what state the engine is in after 125k miles.....

The car is probably not far off the right money, if the engine proves to be OK. The apparent faults are not too much of a drama, but it is the "hidden" stuff that scares. Well known, high mileage cars with good (independent specialist) service history is one thing, but there is no mention of that with this car.

my personal view is similar to Des and Simon . A good track day car could be had if the price was right(got to be room for manouver) and the car checks out at a decent inspection by a specialist. There is going to be a list of things to do, but how many in the list would stop you driving it???? Realistically it has seats that are very similar to a clubsports (i could live with that) the rear mags were probably shot anyway and your better off sourcing lighter newer wheels anyway. The rest is either cosmetic or mechanically fixable. Don't forget these cars are now 15 years old and nearly all of them will have signs of use and need work. Even the low mileage cars (15 year old suspension parts! used or not).
The other side of the coin suggests that for 6-7k more you'll get something in better condition and lower mileage. or 4-5 k less for a re-worked c2 with brand new bits. Decisions decisions ehh
