Is this a bargain??

The seats would certainly stop you driving it. I litterally couldn't fit in them.
Before I get told to lose weight I'm only 11st 10!

Certainly cheaper than recovering the seats.

The more I think about it the better that car gets. Sure it's tatty, but investing in it over time shouldn't be money down the drain. After all it will always be an RS.

I think it very much depends on your intended use and how long you keep it. If you plan to use it as a trackday toy and keep it well maintained and slowly improve it's condition and keep it say five years or so then you "probably" would not lose anything by way of depreciation(i.e. it will still be worth roughly what you paid for it five years down the line, maybe a tad more, overall not bad). If you look at it as a investment then forget it. The car is high mileage and you will have to wait for other cars to catch up and for rarity value and age to play there part. In many years to come these cars are going to need restoration , maybe not quite as thorough as the old 2.7 cars but corrosion will happen, at that point the "correctness" of the restoration or lack of it for the very low mileage cars will probably mean more in the long run.

my personal view is similar to Des and Simon . A good track day car could be had if the price was right(got to be room for manouver) and the car checks out at a decent inspection by a specialist. There is going to be a list of things to do, but how many in the list would stop you driving it???? Realistically it has seats that are very similar to a clubsports (i could live with that) the rear mags were probably shot anyway and your better off sourcing lighter newer wheels anyway. The rest is either cosmetic or mechanically fixable. Don't forget these cars are now 15 years old and nearly all of them will have signs of use and need work. Even the low mileage cars (15 year old suspension parts! used or not).
The other side of the coin suggests that for 6-7k more you'll get something in better condition and lower mileage. or 4-5 k less for a re-worked c2 with brand new bits. Decisions decisions ehh

Wash your mouth out with soap.....[;)]

I've been watching from the sidelines here. This car doesn't sound cheap, given its high mileage, doubtful provenance and (I never thought I'd say this!) colour. For £8k more you could buy Julian Thompson's immaculate Guards Red car which is much lower mileage and in top condition.

I personally think the car's worth about 20k...at that price it's worth buying and eitehr running as is until it breaks or spending some money on. Either way, as someone else said, it'll never be as desirable as its peers in the future, although note that mileages and colours have never held back the value of 2.7RS....

Did anyone buy this ?

Only I am thinking of another old restoration project now the austin seven is finished [:D]

I did buy Julian Thompsons car --- which was, and is, lovely.

Chris.

well done that man. Ju's just bought a Caterham to tide him over until his new toy is delivered!

Can't a chap have any secrets ? The answer is yes.

Sold my Clio Trophy and a 993 C2 3.6 LHD to do it.

And is the steering on the LHD cars heavy ? Yes. Even heavier than it was on my 2.5 1.9 GTI with track tyres on it !

And seems to be having a lot of fun in it -- though he may need a new gearbox at some time !

Yep bought it earlier this year. There's a few SL/SLR/R3/4/500 owners seem to have owned/do own 964RSs don't you think....
Hope to get another Caterham soon.

Yes, I used to own a 964RS and went the Caterham route way before Des' first car was a twinkle in his eye ;)

There's a 116K mile rubystone RS at Gmund for £34K - could this be the same car that they've bought and done some work on? Details are a bit thin at the moment, but I've asked for some history etc.

Wouldn't be surprised....depending on what they've done a 6-8k mark ups not bad!

It's LHD.

That will be Km I guess --- so around 70,000 miles, or 5,000 miles per annum.

If so, given that good servicing and reasonable care are everything, I wouldn't worry.

These are supposed to be good for 300,000Km, --- so that gives you another 25 years before you need start worrying ? !

Well maybe not quite, but why not take it for a drive and make your own judgement ? It seems to me to be a good value car against the two £48k 48,000 Km cars that have just popped up. And you won't be worried at the idea of adding another 20,000 Km, so you would (I am sure) enjoy it !!
