Is this a bargain??

ORIGINAL: ChrisW

These are supposed to be good for 300,000Km, --- so that gives you another 25 years before you need start worrying ? !

I'm sorry but WHAT exactly is supposed to be good for 300,000km exactly in any car??????????????

Jason, my work collegue's diesel passat has just past the 250k mile marker are we saying that a Porsche is less likely to reach such heady mileages??? Given that the Porsche will likely have considerably more love thrown at it (read money)i would say it would stand a good chance of being in very rude health at 180k miles(300k km).

I owned a 930 from 75000 miles thru 223 000 miles ............and it was rebuilt to go go on for more , but not with me .

Never seen a diesel passat at a trackday, other than towing something in the paddock.....most of us track these cars and with foot to the floor, these cars are more likely to need various parts of drive and transmission replacing/rebuildng in multiples of 10's of thousands miles rather than a few thousand of less engineered cars.......specific use and refresh is more relevant than absolute mileage as far as I can tell [:)]

Apologies for the lazy language, how much time do you have ?

Agreed that everything is on a repair and renewal basis, but other than cars that have been starved of oil or otherwise junked, the whole of the drive train in a well maintain and used (not abused) 964RS should be good for this mileage.
The standard engine was not highly tuned, it gained speed from a loss of mass, which puts less strain on everything.
It was however blueprinted, in the early stages and from a service standpoint, it will probably have ben treated at least as well as a standard car --- so why should it be any less reliable ?

QED. These are supposed to be good for 300,000 Km ? Which in general they they do.

You are free to contradict this assertion, what evidence do you have to support it ?

I wasn't contradicting it just wanted to know what exactly was....I actually agree with Paul that the RS and most Porsches are very easily good for 300,000km provided they are maintained, rebuilt and have many parts replaced....your statement was so matter of fact though that it implied that these cars are good for that without this being done....which almost no cars are.

Thats all.

Thanks Martin. It'll be interesting to see what they've done to it for the 7K price uplift.

No problem --- I had assumed a modicum of user competence !

I went to look at this car when it was for sale in Windsor and tried to buy it but without success. I was the worst RS I have looked to date but still had potential. Looking at the paint and panels I wonder whether it has been on its roof at some stage? It's certainly had an off side rear bump. It needs a new clutch, front brakes and the suspension will need setting up too. Also, the rear mags were missing, albeit I was told that the owner had them somewhere (that was the bit which frustrated my purchase), and the seats were copies. It's still probably as cheap as you'll see a RS these days (I should imagine it went for £24 - 25K, and it probably wanted £5k spending on it), so still a bargain for the guys at Gmund.

It'll be interesting to see how long it takes to sell.

I know Andrew has accumulated a large "original bits" bin over the years --- he was the only person able to find a pair of original inertia reel covers for my RS.

Simply ask him all the questions you need answering. He told me that he looks for £2k profit, so you may find he's done quite a lot.

As an aside, his own drive is a Mint Green LHD 964RS, --- he might have done quite a resurrection job with RPM next door who really seem to understand these cars.
