is your PC slowing down?

Scott,

Good - sounds like excellent progress. A good slug of memory helps a lot of slow machines.

Do persevere with Tune XP, it looks slightly techie but there is good documentation, which helps a lot. Go to Help > Documentation for a short description of what each setting does, and whether it is recommended or not. Essentially, if you do everything that is "recommended for all users", you will make more progress still.

yes, PC's need this every so often. Glad this computer I'm typing on doesnt- its a Mac, they dont need defragging.

they still get terribly slow when the discs are nearly full though []

Hi

I have a question not on my Porsche , but about the pc. Should you only delete files with a .tmp file? just in case I delete any applications

Thanks
Helen

You can safely delete ANY file that resides in the ..Temp or ..Temporary Files directories. If a file is currently in use Windows will not allow it to be deleeted. Applications are normally stored in the ..Program Files directory and you should not attempt to manually delete any files there - .tmp or otherwise. Programs should only be removed via the "Add/Remove Programs" appleet from the Control Panel.

Hope that helps.

Regards

Dave

Helen - i'd definitely try the CClean application mentioned earlier in this post (with a link to where you can download it) During my clean up process I firstly manually deleted about 4500 temp files in the usual temp file directory, then ran the Windows Disk Clean application that reckoned it got rid of a load more useless files, then when I downloaded CClean and ran that it found several thousand more files to delete.

Microsoft really need to try harder to create a decent quality product. I can't believe that when it boils down to it Windows requires the user to carry out periodic clean ups of the system to keep it running efficiently.

Thanks Guys,

I've recently reformatted and partitioned my laptop hard disk because it was so slooow. The rebuild helped and using CCleaner and TuneXP1.5 has also speeded it up especially the boot up. I've done my wife's laptop but I can't get hers to run as quckly as mine, so she's sulking! LOL
