I've decided to buy a 944 Turbo

ORIGINAL: Someguy

So I took an S2(out of interest) and a turbo the 130,000 mile turbo for a spin. I was very disappointed by the turbo. It was far slower than the s2. It does need a good service (it cut out out on idle). Is it usual for them to loose this much power?

Would a service sort it out, or should I be looking elsewhere (or buying an s2)

Peter

Something definitely not right then with the Turbo. It should definitely feel faster, even if in reality it isn't that much faster

Hi,

The turbo was doing something, you could feel it kicking after about 4000 rpm.

The boost gauge was heading for the 2 bar mark when she was up in the revs.

You probably need to drive, or at least passenger, in a couple more to have a good benchmark. Something doesn't sound right.

I certainly wouldn't limit yourself to just the two Turbo's you have mentioned

As well as what everyone else has already said, there may well be boost leaks within what is a fair amount of tubing within the system. Certainly worth driving a few examples to compare and contrast - the 8 valve engine is very robust if its been looked after and the one you drove certainly doesn't sound "right".

That said around town and off boost even a modded and healthy turbo will feel flat compared with the S2, they are also tall geared in comparison and part of the trick is to stay in the right gear to keep things bubbling along nicely, though again modding and making sure the basics are working will improve matters considerably. These are properly quick cars but it is very "old school" turbo technology and power delivery and takes some getting used to.

Not driven an S2 (to my shame [;)]) but consensus is that in "real world" driving and at least until you get up to somewhat illegal speeds with the boost really kicking in, an unmodded turbo won't be that much quicker than an S2

Hi,

Thanks everyone for their input and answers.

I figured that now as I'm back at a computer I'd give a better description of the two cars I saw today.

The S2, was in great condition, no rust, interior and exterior were clean and tidy. When driving the car, the engine appeared to be in good order. There was a lot of body role compared to the turbo I drove later on, and it appeared to pitch and dive under breaking and acceleration, more than I would have expected. It seemed quite settled around corners, and I've to admit that I was smiling when I got out of it (which is alot of why I'm looking for a 944).

The turbo, it had lived, it was in reasonable condition, but you could see that it'd been worked. The interior was better than I thought the first time, however during a far more thorough investigation there was water under the carpet on the drivers seat, and the carpet on the other side of the car was damp. During driving the car I found it alot more planted than the S2 around corners, however at motorway speeds it was slightly nervous/twitchy. The car appeared to seriously lack power, this is compared to the S2. After driving it for about 15 minutes it appeared to struggle for fuel, and cut out. It restarted no problem, but repeatedly coughed and sputtered for a few minutes, then it appeared to right itself. The throttle sensor, or something within the engine management appeared to be having issues, it showed the signs of a sticky throttle cable, i.e. when you pushed the accelerator and released it, the engine stayed at a higher speed for a few seconds before dropping back. It also idled high (1500 rpm).

This afternoon based on all the coments above and suggestions, I called a guy about a turbo advertised, that has been slightly modified, the guy wasn't great on the specific changes, they'd been made by the previous owner. He's had the car for nearly two years, and said it's suspension had been uprated, and some work has been done around the turbo boost / remapping. I'm gion to go see this car during the week, so hopefully this one is in better condition.

Thanks for all the great advice, and the answers to the questions.

I'll let you know how I get on with the next Turbo. Otherwise I'm half thinking of buying an S2.

Thanks again.

Peter

S2 is a great car. If you go for a modified turbo, that can be a great car too, but you need to have absolute chapter and verse on what has been done to it and by whom. If the car comes with fully convincing story, a matching set of documentation and ideally you can talk to a respected specialist who knows the car and has been maintaining it, that's fine.

Anything that has been done by JMG, Promax or Hartech should be fine.

Yes clearly the Turbo you drove is poorly in several ways - there are still a fair few out there so my advice would be to try some others and if they don't float your boat then the S2 is an excellent car in its own right. Sounds like the S2 you drove was in need of some refreshed suspension though !

Yep, most are! When mine was last in at RPM Ollie commented that they only seem to see two sorts of 944 now, either on new KWs or very tired. Mine needs some attention...[&o]

I think you really need to decide whether you want a turbo or an S2, they are very different beasts. The turbo is the start of a journey towards more power that will cost you all your time, money and sanity but be an awesome car. An S2 is pretty much as good as it gets when standard, all you really need is a decat and chip, so if it's not fast enough for you then you'll wnat to change it. Personally, the S2 is plenty quick enough for UK roads, and a lot less hassle than a turbo, but others find c. 211 bhp way too little.
