Just a few bit's 'n' pieces of the latest build.

Oww would you people stop all this dirty talk of lovely power! I've got to wait till March the 1st before I can drive my car again and the minutes are going very very slowly![&:]

However.. Serious congratulations I cannot wait to see how this project develops as I have a feeling its very serious. There are those that think there is no benefit to the 3.2 over the 3.0 so going on my brief experience of it. You must be feeling some pretty serious progression at 1bar boost! Especially with all those extra goodies you've got! How does it feel pick up wise compared to your last build? Does it rev easily?

Regards,

Ben

p.s. I did write a long reply to your message on Rennlist but then my internet died and I lost it when I clicked send!!! I'm so mad that I can't bring myself to re-type it yet! I am interested to hear why you think the 5" Exhaust is necessary though? I thought that if you got too big the air speed reduced and the air started to tumble which had an effect of the turbo?? 5" sounds huge, is there a calculation to determine the correct size? I will be speaking to the chaps who build the exhausts for most of the big rally teams in a few weeks so could ask if your interested?

Well it's Sunday night here and I picked it up Friday evening. So far have done almost 700km's which is almost 500 miles. I've not seen much of 'er indoors this weekend.[:D] So as I had passed the point where they said I could give it a little bit of boost, I switched the Apexi ebc back onto my old setting of 1.25 bar thinking that I'll creep up to that for short bursts. First time I did that this morning the thing shot me out of my dimension into Hyperspace and rocketed up to 1.45bar!!! Jesus H! I exclaimed. I mean I had no control of how quickly it built boost and for some reason shot past the old 1.25 setting? So anyway straight back to the 'Off' position and you could tell the difference immediately. I mean it's still quick but I can't wait until we can sort the ebc out. Damn this thing is a rocket. The last incarnation of a motor was also 3.0L and it was quick too, but we only had the stock head and cam. Let me be the first to say that those who say that we don't need improvements to the head/cam haven't seen the light. This thing feels like it just wants to jump through the 7000rpm and into the 8's. Not that I'm going there of course but unlike the stock components that just run out of puff this is just getting into it's stride. It sounds like it is tearing the fabric of time while doing it also [:)].
So it's 2 weeks until our first meet at the track since 2006. I am here to say that there will be some 993tt and even GT3 owners looking over their shoulders and perhaps past too. Bear in mind that these impressions are without the cam being set up perfectly and there is still the headers, exhaust, and a GT3582 to find it's way onto this build as well.
I am starting to feel alive again.

500 miles already - that's good going [:)]

EBC's seem to be funny things, they all seem to work on percentages and relative boost levels and don't actually monitor the real boost pressure. I remember I had my Greddy set up for 15psi maximum when I was still running on the airflow meter. As soon as I replaced that with the Vittesse MAF the boost would shoot up to over 18psi on the same settings, so a bit more adjusting had to be done. I can only imagine that your free flowing head and cam are allowing so much extra flow that your EBC will also need turning down.

Two weeks until your first track meet - very jealous here [:'(]

I think you're right Paul. I had the Greddy first and didn't like it's randomness and then got the Apexi which I found to be a lot more specific, but this could be something like a line that has become disconnected or something else. It's going back to the workshop for a few days to do a few more things. It was just on 'weekend release' for me to log some miles. I did my part let me tell you.[:D].
I will get some Video soon Peter. I'll be taking some at the track on the 8th for sure. Can't wait...

The problem with EBC's is that they are a closed loop control system but needs to have the response of your boost system dialed in to prevent boost spikes. You can get them working fine and perfectly reliable with one setup, then if you change something that changes the boose side of things (intake, exhaust, turbo etc) then the EBC will want fine tuning again. So maybe if you switch on the self-learning function that learns how responsive your boost system in each gear and makes the fine adjustments itself.

Patrick - are you not going to control boost via your standalone? Seems to me that would give you much better control.

Sorry Ben I meant to reply to this earlier. The pickup and just wanting to leap along the hwy is fantastic. Remember that I've had my crank lightenend significantly in concert with the light fly wheel so this only enhances it's willingness to rev. Plus I've changed my cw&p to an S2's so that shortens the final drive a lot. While I do lose some top end and it really needs an extra gear for long journeys, this is not what it has been set up for. When I do the videos you'll see just how quickly it runs through the gears. I suggest that if you want more of a track focussed car the S2 cwp is a great alteration. The engine just always seems to be in the meatier part of the torque band. Did I mention torque, Ooh Laa Laa...when did torque become sexy?? 'Truckloads' doesn't do it justice.
